My wife and I visited Thanga House in Tranquebar at the end of August 2022. We drove down from Pondicherry; at that point in time, the road was terrible and the journey took us almost 4 hours. We had pre-booked dinner, for which we paid extra (Rs. 550/person). The quantities were fixed; there were two curries provided, of which one was a miniscule portion of cauliflower. Aside from this, the food was delicious, and the manager had gotten the menu right. We had requested a cake, which was procured and provided to us. Outside our room, there were three mattresses kept in storage. There was no water in the taps from 10pm onwards; we called/messaged the caretaker + manager, but this was not resolved till the next morning. Breakfast was to be at 830am. At 8am the cook came and asked if we wanted tea or coffee; I suggested we have it fresh at the table, but she said she had to go the temple so she would be leaving soon. Again, the breakfast itself was delicious. Later that evening, we had just returned from dinner at the nearby Neemrana property when the caretaker/manager at Thanga House told us that a) his mood was a bit off because b) he'd just found out the person he was dating was a divorcee so c) he was leaving and d) we'd have to lock up behind him. After he left, we realised that we had no drinking water, so had to call the other manager at 1030pm for assistance, which was provided. On our final day, there was bread provided with no butter; the idli, dosai and upma however were excellent. All in all, this was a mixed experience. The room and amenities were excellent, there was good WiFi connectivity; the smart TV had an included Netflix account that worked very well and the food we ate was delicious. The service however was over-familiar and inexperienced; the property would be better served by hiring professionals rather than the current set of amateurs who, while sweet, would benefit from extensive hospitality training.
