Shípíng (石屏) is an ancient town in the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in southeastern Yunnan, about 240 km (150 miles) from Kunming, the provincial capital. The stone-paved streets are really pretty, and the local tofu with all kinds of mushrooms is delicious (though some of the wild mushrooms can be poisonous, so you have to be careful!). I stayed in a guesthouse that was built in a 300-year-old traditional house—it was such a cozy place to relax. The courtyard there was especially nice, perfect for sitting down with a cup of tea.

Yilong Lake (异龙湖) in 石屏 is a beautiful spot where you could easily spend the whole day strolling around. It’s a large freshwater lake in Shiping County, Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan, with a surface area of about 32 square kilometers (12 sq mi). The scenery is stunning, especially when the colorful lotus flowers are in bloom. The lake reflects the blue sky like a giant mirror, creating a calm and peaceful vibe. It’s also a great place to hit your 10,000 steps on your tracker, and the sunsets are really pretty. It’s definitely worth visiting twice—once in the morning and again in the evening (but best to skip noon time).

I thought Jianshui was already quite off the beaten path, but I was surprised to find that Shiping Ancient City, just 50 kilometers away, is even more hidden gems. This is a thousand-year-old city perched on a "turtle's back," boasting 192 well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty residences and mansions, earning it the title of "Museum of Ming and Qing Dynasty Folk Houses in Southern Yunnan." Shiping Ancient Town is located in the center of the county, covering a relatively small area. It takes half a day to a full day to explore on foot. The ancient town retains the layout from the Ming and Qing dynasties, with narrow streets mainly consisting of one-way roads and pedestrian streets. Shiping County Government Office and the Confucian Temple stand side by side in the center of the ancient town, with parking lots both in front of and inside the government office. There are usually not many tourists, so we parked our car here; on holidays, it’s best to park outside the ancient town. The courtyard inside the county government office is small, with exhibitions that are worth seeing. The Confucian Temple is well preserved, and the Yuping Academy and Shiping County Museum are also located within the temple courtyard. The Shiping Tofu Museum, transformed from an old tofu factory, is a cultural heritage exhibition and business venue combined. Shiping tofu is similar to Jianshui tofu, with grilled tofu being the most distinctive way to enjoy it. What makes Shiping tofu special is that it is made without adding brine, using well water directly, likely because the well water here has a natural saline effect. The Yuan Jiagu Memorial Hall is another unique attraction within the ancient town. Yuan Jiagu was the only top scholar (Zhuangyuan) from Yunnan, and the memorial hall is set in his former residence, a Qing dynasty residence with Yunnan characteristics. It introduces Yuan Jiagu’s life and achievements and is also a great place to learn about Yunnan’s history and culture. The Li Huaixiu and Li Huaifu Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance Center is another special site. It is a cultural heritage exhibition venue renovated from an old building, which also hosts performances and exchange activities, making it very enjoyable. The attractions within the ancient town are not far apart but are quite scattered, so it’s best to plan a circular walking route in advance. Also, map walking navigation only shows main roads, which can be a detour. Based on experience, I chose some small alleys to pass through, which saved effort and allowed me to see many old houses. The Shiping Small Train Station is also very nice, similar to the Bisezhai, Kaiyuan, and Jianshui small trains I visited before, all representing the development of modern Yunnan. I feel that Shiping Ancient Town is truly a treasure trove, with many resources that can be planned, opened, and utilized. I suggest using Xinzhou Ancient Town as a model to build a tourist destination that visitors love and that drives local economic development. Shiping Ancient Town

Jianshui Museum is an ordinary county-level museum, which does not match the status of the former "Lin'an Prefecture" of this famous historical and cultural city in China. It is uncertain whether a grand new museum will be built in the future. The Jianshui Purple Pottery Museum is newly built and, relying on the Purple Pottery Town, it should be a key local industry project supported by the government. Unfortunately, the planning and management are poor, lacking even basic accessibility facilities and any sense of service. However, the nearby Wulong Lake Park is worth a visit. Inside, the Foying Lotus Island presents a tropical island scenery that is very distinctive. The multicolored soil hills on the island are formed from the land used for Jianshui purple pottery clay modification, and now it is a great place for citizens to relax and have fun, perfect for taking photos and checking in. The Jianshui small train heads towards Shiping, and driving this route again has become a popular route with many tourists. With many people, cars, and vendors, the lively atmosphere somewhat diminishes the experience. It is recommended to avoid holidays as much as possible and to start early to catch the morning mist at Shuanglong Bridge and avoid the midday sun, which is the most beautiful time. The rural ancient bridges and stations along the way are still very beautiful. At the terminal Tuan Shan Station of the Jianshui small train, continue along National Highway 323 towards Shiping for ten kilometers to find the Huilan Bridge Pavilion, which is very distinctive. Shiping and Jianshui have a relationship somewhat like that of Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang. Shiping is not as famous as Jianshui, nor as large as the ancient city of Jianshui. They are similar yet different. I got to know Shiping because of Shiping grilled tofu. Jianshui tofu and Shiping tofu are known as the two champions of Yunnan tofu, but in fact, they differ greatly. Jianshui tofu is made by fermenting the original tofu juice into a sour slurry, while Shiping tofu is made using well water. Therefore, Jianshui tofu has a bit of the smell of stinky tofu, whereas Shiping tofu retains the original fragrance of tofu. Of course, everyone has their own preference. If you wander around Shiping without a specific purpose, you will find scenery everywhere: all attractions in Shiping are free. In front of the Confucian Temple, bamboo woven items are displayed, and no one chases away the vendors; at the entrance of China Post, an elderly lady sits selling incense, and no one drives her away. There are no urban management officers in sight, nor are they needed. Where there is a Confucian Temple, there is naturally Confucius, who over 2,500 years ago already managed things for everyone: to be knowledgeable and courteous, to practice benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness, and that heaven cherishes life... Many prayer tags hang from the trees, wishing for success in exams, top rankings, enlightenment and academic achievement, and some even for someone passing the entrance exam to Gejiu No.1 High School... So, worried parents, when your child is starting to learn and grow, have you prayed to Confucius? Many shops in the ancient city bear marks of the times. The name of Shouchun Clinic is really well chosen—“longevity and eternal spring.” Patients seeing these words probably feel a bit better already. Shiping grilled tofu is everywhere. For locals, grilled tofu is both a dish and a meal. Groups of three or five friends chat and eat leisurely. It doesn’t matter whose tofu is the most authentic; what matters is whether you find your own flavor. We also found a shop and ordered a table full of barbecue. The dipping sauces were varied and colorful. I added a bit of everything and found that the chaotic mix was quite good! Let’s eat, no more talk... If you have time, take a ride on the Shiping small train. It’s much less crowded than Jianshui Station, and there’s no need to queue. That day, I saw an elderly couple sitting on a bench at the station. They didn’t look like tourists. Their eyes showed waiting? Memories? Thoughts? Or maybe they just came to ride? They seemed like an annotation to this station, annotating the passage of time. Background: The Gebishi Railway was first built in April 1915 and fully opened on October 10, 1936. The railway engineer was a Frenchman named Nifulishi, so the stations along the line all have a strong French style. To avoid connecting with the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway and prevent the French from seizing transportation and management rights, and due to the complex and steep terrain, it was designed as a 60-centimeter narrow gauge railway. In 1970, the Kunming Railway Bureau converted the narrow gauge line from Mengzi to Gejiu to Jianshui to Shiping into a meter gauge line.

The Yunnan-Vietnam Railway is an international railway connecting Kunming City in Yunnan Province, China, with Haiphong City in Vietnam, spanning a total length of 854 kilometers. The Yunnan section of the railway is 467 kilometers long, running from Kunming through Jianshui, Shiping, Mengzi to Hekou at the China-Vietnam border. It is the earliest international railway connecting China with Southeast Asian countries. Shiping Station’s architecture features French Baroque style, with red bricks and yellow walls complemented by green wrought-iron window frames and a red roof, highlighting a unique French charm. Inside the station, many relics and antiques from that era are preserved, such as old-fashioned fans, iron doors and windows, and vintage faucets, all evoking a sense of traveling back in time a hundred years. Shiping Station is located by the lakeside of Yilong Lake Scenic Area, with a parking lot available for convenient vehicle parking.
