Izu Peninsula

5.0/5
4 reviews
Izu Peninsula is a peninsula formed by volcanic activity. Two of the world's rare volcanic arcs converge here, creating a diverse landscape interwoven with hot springs, volcanic rock coasts, and mountain valleys. The peninsula is surrounded by the sea on three sides, offering a rich variety of scenery, from rugged coastlines to the dense forests and deep valleys of the Amagi Mountains. Hot springs are Izu's signature attraction. Shuzenji Onsen is said to have been established over 1,000 years ago and is a historic hot spring town on the peninsula. The hot spring street is built along the Katsura River, featuring the serene and deep Bamboo Forest Path, with Tokko-no-yu resting quietly in between. Atami and Ito on the east coast offer a different vacation atmosphere, where hotels stand by the sea, allowing you to enjoy ocean views while soaking in the hot springs. Traces of volcanic activity can be found all over the peninsula. Jogasaki Coast is a volcanic rock coast formed after lava from the eruption of Mt. Omuro approx. 4,000 years ago flowed into the sea, cooled, and was eroded by waves over many years. It spans approx. 9 km, and the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge hangs over the cliffs. Mt. Omuro itself is a perfectly round volcanic cone, and you can see a panoramic view of Izu from the summit. Dogashima on the west coast is famous for its sea caves; when you take a boat into Tensodo Cave, light pours down from the gap in the ceiling onto the water, creating a blue glow. Seafood is also a major feature of Izu. Being surrounded by the sea on three sides makes the local seafood exceptionally fresh. Splendid alfonsino is a representative local fish species, commonly found in hot spring hotels and coastal restaurants.Izu City · 24 km from Minamiizu

Shimoda Marine Aquarium is a unique aquarium located in a beautiful inlet in Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture, making full use of the natural sea. Unlike typical aquariums, it features a "bay-type" exhibit that utilizes the actual ocean as is, allowing visitors to observe marine life living vibrantly in an environment close to its natural habitat up close. Inside the aquarium, you can encounter popular animals such as dolphins, sea lions, and penguins, with the dolphin performance being a particular highlight. The dynamic jumps and synchronized routines with trainers, performed on a spacious ocean stage, are breathtaking and captivate many visitors. There are also plenty of interactive programs where you can get up close and personal with the dolphins, creating unforgettable memories. Furthermore, the aquarium features a tank area displaying a variety of marine life, including fish and jellyfish, allowing visitors to leisurely enjoy viewing them in a fantastical setting. In the touch pool, visitors can actually touch starfish, sea cucumbers, and other marine creatures, making it a rich collection of interactive exhibits that children and adults alike can enjoy and learn from. One of its biggest attractions is its location surrounded by nature, allowing visitors to leisurely stroll through the grounds while enjoying the sea breeze. The facility also has a restaurant and a gift shop where you can enjoy Izu's unique cuisine and souvenirs. Shimoda Marine Aquarium, where you can experience the allure of the sea while connecting with nature, is a recommended spot not only for family trips but also for couples and friends. Izu Peninsula's southern Shirahama beach, as its name suggests, has white sand, which makes the seawater appear even clearer and bluer. The sand on the beach is free of impurities and feels comfortable underfoot. The seawater is clear and very clean. Many people come to visit in the summer. There aren't many shops nearby, so if you didn't bring everything you need, your options for purchasing items are limited. There are many parking lots nearby. Some have bathrooms where you can pay to shower, but they do not provide body wash or shampoo, and there are no lockers.Shimoda · 11.3 km from Minamiizu

Hot Springs on Izu Peninsula

5.2
Izu is known as the town of hot springs and has a thousand-year hot spring culture. Kuroneiwa Hot Spring is a wild open-air hot spring facing the sea in Izu Kitagawa. It is said that fishermen discovered that the rocks were not covered with seaweed, so they discovered hot springs around it. "When you soak in the hot spring, you can see the Pacific Ocean from a zero angle." This is the special feature of Kurogen Rock Hot Spring. Toi Hot Spring is the oldest hot spring in Nishi-Izu. It is a very representative hot spring in the area and has a very early history. Around 1611, when locals were developing Toi Kaneyama, they discovered the hot spring gushing from the pit in Anraku Temple. , the locals call it MABU. Moreover, there is an open-air hot spring on the spacious balcony, and there are deck chairs next to the hot spring. Visitors can enjoy the hot spring while overlooking Suruga Bay, Mount Fuji, etc.Japan · Izu City

Surrounded by the sea on three sides, where the Pacific Ocean meets Sagami Bay and Suruga Bay, it is famous for its spectacular cliffs, unique rock formations, and vast ocean views. Cape Irozaki has rugged terrain, and long-term wave erosion has formed a unique coastal landscape. On clear days, you can see the Izu Islands in the distance, offering magnificent scenery. Standing on the cape is the Irozaki Lighthouse, first built in 1871. It is one of the Western-style lighthouses built in modern Japan and still provides navigation services for passing ships today. Visitors can follow the trail to the observation deck and Ishimuro Shrine, which is built on the edge of the cliff, to experience the charm of the blend of natural scenery, history, and culture. In recent years, a visitor center, cafes, and observation facilities have been built locally to provide visitors with a more comfortable sightseeing experience.Minamiizu · 5.6 km from downtown

I really like the scenery, quietness and hot springs of the Izu Peninsula, and of course the restaurants with pure Japanese menus. Although it is a bit embarrassing, it is super exciting; I look forward to visiting in three weeks.

This is a truly delightful aquarium. You can interact with dolphins up close, feed sea turtles, sea lions, and seals, watch dolphins fly overhead, and even swim and snorkel with them. It's a perfect destination for family trips. Although the aquarium is small and the facilities are basic, the interactivity and fun are top-notch, making it worth spending at least half a day there. For transportation, you can take a taxi directly from Izukyu Shimoda Station for 1100 yen one way. If you miss the bus on the return trip, you can ask the aquarium staff to help you call a taxi; you won't be able to get a ride through ride-hailing apps.

The hotel we stayed in was right on the Shirahama coast. The second and third photos were taken when we climbed to the roof of the hotel. The coast view was very beautiful. The sea water was very clear. The sand on the beach was not only fine and soft, but the entire coast was very clean.

The cactus zoo at the foot of Mount Omuro is incredibly soothing. Over a thousand different cacti of varying shapes and sizes grow in the greenhouse, creating a spectacular sight. Most of the animals roam freely, and the most endearing are the Kapibala, who relax in the hot springs with a gentle and docile demeanor. You can even hand-feed the red pandas and alpacas. This unique blend of flora and fauna is gentle and healing, making it an unforgettable and tender memory of your trip to Izu.
