🇭🇺 Szeged, Hungary

Szeged is one of Hungary’s most charming cities, located in the country’s south on the banks of the Tisza River. It’s often called the “City of Sunshine” because it receives some of Hungary’s highest annual sunshine hours.

📍 Why visit Szeged?

Szeged is perfect if you enjoy:

· 🏛️ Historic architecture
· ⛪ Beautiful churches and squares
· 🌊 Riverside walks
· ☕ Cafés and relaxed city life
· 🌳 Parks and outdoor spaces
· 🍲 Hungarian food and paprika
· 🎭 Festivals and cultural events

⭐ Top places to visit

1. Votive Church of Szeged (Szegedi Dóm)
The city’s most famous landmark. Its twin towers dominate Dóm Square, one of Hungary’s most beautiful urban squares.

2. Dóm Square
A spectacular open square surrounded by historic buildings. In summer, it hosts the famous Szeged Open-Air Festival.

3. Reök Palace
A stunning Art Nouveau building designed by architect Ede Magyar. Its colorful façade makes it one of Szeged’s most photographed buildings.

4. Szeged Synagogue
One of the most impressive synagogues in Hungary, famous for its beautiful interior, stained glass and ornate dome.

5. Tisza River 🌊
Take a leisurely walk along the river, especially around sunset. Riverside cruises and boat trips can also be available seasonally.

6. Széchenyi Square
A large green central square surrounded by elegant historic buildings. It’s a pleasant place for a relaxed walk.

7. Móra Ferenc Museum
A good choice for history, archaeology, art and local culture.

8. Anna Thermal Bath ♨️
A historic thermal bath where you can relax in thermal pools and enjoy spa facilities.

9. Szeged Zoo 🦁
A large zoo on the outskirts of the city, particularly suitable if you’re traveling with children.

10. Újszeged
The quieter area across the Tisza, with parks and the Erzsébet Grove, ideal for walking and relaxing.

🚆 How to get there

From Budapest, Szeged is very easy to reach by train.

· 🚆 Budapest → Szeged: roughly 2–2.5 hours
· 🚗 By car: roughly 2 hours, depending on traffic
· 🚌 Long-distance buses are also available.

Szeged is also relatively close to Serbia and Romania, making it interesting as part of a Central European road trip.

🌤️ Best time to visit

May–June: 🌸 Excellent weather and pleasant sightseeing
July–August: ☀️ Warm, lively and festival season
September: 🍂 Comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds
December: 🎄 Christmas atmosphere and festive markets

For a comfortable sightseeing trip, May–June or September would be my choice.

🗓️ How many days?

1 day: Main sights and city center
2 days: Ideal for a relaxed visit
3 days: Add thermal baths, museums, food experiences and nearby attractions

Sunset beside the Tisza River is especially beautiful. 🌅

Szeged is a great choice if you want a quieter, more relaxed Hungarian experience rather than the busy atmosphere of Budapest.
