Traveling through France, Switzerland, and Italy | All covered with one Eurail pass! — traveler post in Lugano

Traveling through France, Switzerland, and Italy | All covered with one Eurail pass!

When it comes to European travel destinations, back in the days before independent travel became popular, there was a phrase that often appeared as a fixed combination: France, Switzerland, and Italy. Today, I’m sharing a train travel route through these popular yet slightly off-the-beaten-path destinations in France, Switzerland, and Italy. Of course, I used the Eurail pass for the entire trip, which is really convenient! My itinerary was actually the reverse. The first stop was landing at Rome Fiumicino Airport, the capital of Italy. After customs and collecting my luggage, I headed straight to the airport train station. My first-class Eurail pass allowed me to take the Leonardo Express airport express train to Rome Termini station for free (second-class pass holders need to pay the difference!). The Eternal City, Rome, offers endless sightseeing, shopping, and dining options. I won’t go into detail about the attractions here. Leaving Rome, I took a northbound Italian high-speed train, the Frecciarossa, with Milan as the final stop. But I skipped Florence (because I had already been there!) and went straight to Bologna. The reason was to indulge in the local cuisine. How delicious is Bologna? You’ll have to try it yourself to find out. Later, I took the train to Milan. A little tip: the Chinese restaurants in Milan are quite good, both affordable and tasty. After finishing the Italian part of my trip, I took the train to Lugano in Switzerland. It’s just about a 1 hour and 15-minute train ride from Milan. On the way, you pass by the famous Lake Como. For the adventurous traveler, you can get off the train to explore Lake Como and then catch another train back. The Eurail pass gives you the freedom to come and go as you please. I’ve already shared how to explore Ticino, where Lugano is located, in a previous post, so I won’t repeat it here. From Lugano, I took the train to Zurich. Bahnhofstrasse was still bustling with people, and the ETH Zurich platform and Lindenhof Hill remain free scenic spots. Sitting by Lake Zurich, watching the swans, and popping a few Swiss chocolates I just bought on Bahnhofstrasse into my mouth, I fully enjoyed the lake and mountain scenery of this place. Before heading to France, I took a train from Zurich to visit Lucerne. Every time I come to Switzerland, I have to visit Lucerne. It only takes about 40 minutes to see the Chapel Bridge, stroll through the old town alleys from Swan Square, and before leaving, look up at Mount Pilatus. Lucerne shines brightly, waiting for you. Finally, I left Zurich on the TGV Lyria high-speed train, which took just over 4 hours to go directly from Zurich Central Station to Paris Gare de Lyon, kicking off my Paris adventure. In the romantic city of Paris, I visited the Saint-Martin Canal, climbed Montmartre Hill, saw Monet’s Water Lilies at the Orangerie Museum, and experienced the tranquility of Place des Vosges. I also soaked up the sun in Luxembourg Gardens. The memories that followed were all cities connected by this train journey. Image source: Unsplash

Who can refuse this old-money style resort hotel in Lugano? — traveler post in Lugano

Who can refuse this old-money style resort hotel in Lugano?

I love Lugano on my Swiss itinerary, and I think a big part of the reason is that I stayed at the Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola, located by the lake. It was once a nobleman's mansion and was converted into a hotel in 1885, 136 years ago. Lugano, in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, is full of a completely different atmosphere from the German-speaking part, romantic and sophisticated, with bright sunshine all year round, and this hotel is even more Italian-style old-money style, with charming Mediterranean style everywhere, making the trip feel relaxed and full of vacation vibes! 🌸 The hotel is a delight to the eye, with exotic subtropical plants growing in the garden, modern sculptures scattered everywhere, and each room decorated with its own unique style, with exquisite traditional Chinese decorations in the rooms. 📍 The location is great, right on the shores of Lake Lugano, next to Monte Bre, where you can take a mountain train to the top of the mountain for a panoramic view, hike to the Ticino village of Bre, and take a bus to the old town of Lugano.

Switzerland Travel | The unforgettable treasure city of Lugano. — traveler post in Lugano

Switzerland Travel | The unforgettable treasure city of Lugano.

Located in southern Switzerland Lugano, Switzerland, is an hour's drive from Milan Bathed in the Mediterranean sun☀️ With beautiful lakes, ancient streets, and vintage trains... On a city walk in Lugano Immerse yourself in the charming scenery And experience the peaceful and joyful life of the locals Looking at the photos is so beautiful🍃 🚶🏻‍♀️Lugano Travel Route Mount Brè—Swissminiatur—Lugano Old Town—Lugano Train Station ⛰️Mount Brè There are three ways to get to Mount Brè: hiking, bus, or cogwheel train. Walk from the hotel to funicular Monte Brè and take the cogwheel train🚞. The cogwheel train on Mount Brè has been in operation since 1912. The train is divided into two sections. In the morning sun, the train travels up the mountain, and the city and Lake Lugano become more and more open. Get off the train and walk up the steps. Under the blue sky, you can see the Alps, Lake Lugano, and even the Italian region between Milan and Turin. ⛲️Swissminiatur From Mount Brè, take the bus to Lugano Centro station, then take the boat to Melide, where Swissminiatur is located. This section🛳 is free with a Swiss Travel Pass! Snow-capped mountains, castles, churches, special buildings, railways, ships... You can find these sights in the park. There are also 18 model trains running between the miniature buildings, like a miniature Swiss kingdom. I also saw the model train production process up close, which can only be described as exquisite and meticulous❤️ 🚶🏻‍♀️Lugano Old Town The center of the old town is full of Italian style, with red and yellow buildings, Mediterranean-style squares, arcades, and relief-style flower windows... The center of the old town is Piazza della Riforma, with the main building being the town hall, and there are also restaurants and bars nearby. Gabbani on Via Pessina is a historic deli with local cheeses, exclusive deli meats, traditional desserts, and a variety of wines. You can walk along Nassa Street to the Church of Santa Maria degli Angioli. The exterior is not eye-catching, but the church has Renaissance frescoes by Leonardo da Vinci's disciple Luini. You can't miss Lugano Train Station, with its towering churches, layered red-roofed houses, distant mountains, and the faintly visible Lake Lugano, as well as the trams going up and down the mountain, which make up the postcard scenery of Lugano.

Milan Outskirts Hour | A Guide to the Unmissable Swiss Lakeside Towns — traveler post in Lugano

Milan Outskirts Hour | A Guide to the Unmissable Swiss Lakeside Towns

| A Guide to the Unmissable Swiss Lakeside Towns. 'Lugano', located on the Swiss-Italian border, is just 1️⃣ hour from Milan. Highly recommended for a day trip, it's a very comfortable city with few people and beautiful scenery. You can also visit Morcote, rated as one of the most beautiful towns in Switzerland, for a stroll. Overall, it's very chill❤️. 👉🏻Itinerary: 🔸Lugano: · The scenery right outside the train station is amazing, picture 2️⃣ is taken right after exiting the station, a very classic spot · Stroll around the city center by the lake · Monte Brè You can take bus B2 to cassarate, Monte bre and then take the funicular 🚠 directly to the lookout. Alternatively, take bus 12 to the last stop and walk for about 20 minutes to the lookout. Since we were with elderly people and our hotel happened to provide a discount voucher for the funicular, we chose to take the funicular to the lookout. 🔸Morcote: After descending the mountain and returning to the city, take bus B431 from Lugano centrale to parco Scherrer, remember to get off at this stop, first visit the botanical garden 🌳 and walk up the steps slowly, built by the lake, no entrance fee is required. After visiting the botanical garden, you can continue walking forward, wandering around the small town of Morcote at will. The town itself is not big, just follow the lakeside and enjoy the beautiful scenery. There is also a church ⛪ where you can climb up to overlook the town, but it requires some physical strength. For the return trip, it is recommended to take a 🚢 back to Lugano city center, a 50-minute boat ride, a different mode of transportation, a different experience. Since we were mainly traveling in Switzerland, we bought the Swiss pass, so the cost of taking the bus and boat could be directly covered by the pass, with no extra charges, very convenient. It is advisable to check the bus and boat schedules on SBB in advance.

Lugano, a Swiss border city — traveler post in Lugano

Lugano, a Swiss border city

Lugano is a city and municipality in Switzerland and is part of the Lugano district in the canton of Ticino. It is the largest city in the canton of Ticino and in the Italian-speaking part of southern Switzerland. The city is located at the widest part of Lake Lugano and, together with the neighboring town of Paradiso, occupies the entire Bay of Lugano. The Lugano urban area includes a larger area on both sides of the lake, with many isolated villages, and the city borders Italy to the west and east. The Lugano region is embraced by the Alps and extends over much of the Sottocineri region, the southernmost part of the canton of Ticino and Switzerland. Lugano can be seen from Italy on the hill directly opposite the city center and from the World Heritage Site of Mount San Ponte to the west. Described as a market town since 984, Lugano was the subject of constant dispute between the Dukes of Como and Milan before becoming part of the old Swiss Confederation in 1513. #OverseasTravel #Alps #Switzerland #SwissTravelGuide #SwissTravel #SwissTravelGuide #Switzerlandissobeautiful #GreatPlacesinSwitzerland

I Didn't Expect to Like Lugano This Much 🇨🇭 — traveler post in Lugano

I Didn't Expect to Like Lugano This Much 🇨🇭

I had expected Lugano to be pretty, but I didn't expect to enjoy its atmosphere quite as much as I did. There's something unusual about this part of Switzerland. The scenery is unmistakably Alpine, yet the Italian influence gives everything a different feel. The architecture, the language, the restaurants and the relaxed café culture almost make you forget you're still in Switzerland. I found myself enjoying the simplest things most. Walking along the lake, stopping for a long lunch, wandering through the old streets around Piazza della Riforma and taking in the views without constantly checking what attraction to visit next. Parco Ciani was one of my favourite spots. It's a lovely place to walk, especially along the water, with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. I'd also recommend taking a boat across Lake Lugano if you get the chance. The villages along the shoreline look particularly charming from the water. Of course, Lugano isn't cheap, and I wouldn't describe it as a city packed with activities or nightlife. But that's not really why I'd come here. It's the sort of destination where doing very little can turn out to be the best part of the holiday. Would you spend an entire week in Lugano, or use it as a base to explore the rest of Ticino? #Lugano #Switzerland #Ticino #TravelStories

Old Town Lugano

The old town is very charming. Walking in the old streets is like going back to the old days. Walking by the lake and basking in the sun, and then going to the LV store to buy a bag, there are few people and the goods are in good condition. It is still very pleasant. I hope time can stop.

Lake Como

visited lake como in November 2023, I wouldn’t recommend going at that time of the year as we experienced a lot of rain, nonetheless it was still a beautiful place, with lots to do! We went to Bellagio and Varenna by ferry, which was super easy to use and both places were breathtaking

Villa del Balbianello

It takes about 2 km to travel to the bus stop and the pier. It's beautiful, but the entrance fee is expensive, about 900 baht. Actually, every place in Tomo is beautiful. Don't forget to check the boat schedule and opening and closing times.

Castel Grande

The Castelgrande of Bellinzona is a fortification built by the Duke of Milan in the 15th century to prevent the attack of the Swiss Confederation. In 1500, the fortification of Bellinzona was finally transferred to the Swiss Confederation in the form of a contract (exchange of mercenary services). The fortress is well preserved today and is an important witness to the medieval defense system in the Alps.
