Food Guide

Wuxi cuisine is renowned for its freshness and unique culinary techniques. From century-old small steamed buns to braised pork ribs dating back to the Qing Guangxu era, along with the delicate steaming and blanching methods used for Taihu Lake's famed "three whites," and the smooth, savory fried eel paste, Wuxi's dishes truly reflect the region's exquisite and traditional cooking flair.

Wuxi xiaolongbao, a renowned local specialty also known as small steamed bun, boasts a century-old history, celebrated for its delicate skin and flavorful broth. Crafted with meticulously chosen ingredients and steamed in small baskets, these dumplings feature a robust structure, preventing breakage or spillage of the juicy filling. A single bite releases a burst of savory broth, encapsulating an aroma that is rich yet not overwhelming.

Wuxi fried spare ribs date back to the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty, characterized by their unique brownish-red hue perfected through rigorous cooking methods. The ribs are tender and soft, with a bone aroma that is rich and intoxicating, coated in a thick, savory sauce with a delightful balance of saltiness and sweetness.

The "Three Whites" of Taihu Lake, consisting of silver fish, white shrimp, and white fish, are the star ingredients of Taihu boat cuisine. The selection of these ingredients is carried out with great care, especially focusing on their freshness. The primary cooking methods used are steaming and blanching, which help maintain the natural flavors and enhance the soft, tender texture.

Braised eel is a renowned traditional dish, named for the sizzling sound it makes when served. This culinary delight features a vibrant red hue and a savory mix of sweet and salty flavors. The eel meat is lusciously fatty yet tender and smooth to the taste, offering richness without being overly greasy.

The metro has seen significant usage, with record passenger volumes reported in early 2024, underscoring its importance in residents' daily commutes.

For those preferring a more personalized travel experience, Wuxi offers dynamic bus services. This innovative approach allows residents to hail a bus online, similar to ride-hailing services, offering a convenient, responsive travel option within certain districts. The birds at Yao Hu Town fly so close! — traveler post in Wuxi

The birds at Yao Hu Town fly so close!

With their massive wings swooping right over my head, I couldn't help but instinctively duck. 😂 During my trip to Yao Hu Town in Yixing, Jiangsu, the one thing I wanted to dedicate a separate post to is "The bird's promise." When the white storks and black kites took flight together, I didn't know which one to follow with my eyes. When the vulture got close, I realized just how massive its wingspan actually is! Even while my phone was still recording, I couldn't help but look past the screen to see it with my own eyes. Photos really can't do this proximity justice. I also loved the part where the white stork delivers a letter. One moment I was busy tracking the birds, and the next, listening to the letter reading and the music, I felt myself slowly calm down. The Bird Valley is tucked away between the valley and the bamboo forest; looking up, you can see the birds in flight and the distant mountains. The entire environment is part of the performance. Behind this show are 6 years of preparation, an investment of 300 million yuan, 258 birds from France, and the creative vision of Fan Yue, one of the directors of the "Impression" series. Before the show, you can visit the Bird Art Gallery to get to know these birds, which makes it easier to identify them once you're inside. 🚂 You should set aside plenty of time for Yao Hu Town; after the bird show, there is still so much more to explore. The train in the clouds travels through lakes, bamboo forests, and tea fields—just looking out the window is a relaxing experience. If you're traveling with kids, you can also plan a visit to the Cloud Wonder Kids area or check out the Yao Hu Magic Night. It makes for a very full day. Don't just walk past Longyao Street, either. The texture of the rammed earth walls, the Song Kiln exhibition hall, and the artifacts in the Pottery Museum are all worth a closer look. If you want to get hands-on, you can even try your hand at purple clay pottery making. As an art teacher, I’m always drawn to things that show the marks of human craftsmanship. Don't leave right after dinner in the evening! 🎆 There’s the Dragon Soaring Water Show and fireworks, where lights, water features, and fireworks spread across the lake. "Ode to kiln fire" offers a different kind of excitement, featuring fire dancing, acrobatics, Peking opera, and a final interactive party with the performers.

This mountain getaway is more addictive than any tourist spot — traveler post in Wuxi

This mountain getaway is more addictive than any tourist spot

We planned a weekend trip to Yixing. The group chat was originally flooded with guides for Yaohu Town, but then someone said, "Let's book the mahjong table first," and the vibe instantly shifted. We weren't here to compete with tourist attractions; we wanted a real session for friends—at Chenxi Yayuan Mountain Resort (Yixing Yaohu Town Branch). The entire common area is laid out like a pre-planned flow: lounge sofas to warm up, a stone-paved courtyard to gather, an automatic mahjong table to start the game, and a balcony tea corner to wind down. You can go sightseeing and come back, but the laughter in this session is often more addictive than any checklist. Don't rush to start the battle when you walk in. Sink into the cream-colored sofa with fruit and snacks on the coffee table, and let four people stretch their legs to shake off the city rush. Whoever arrives first claims the corner of the sofa, and latecomers are welcomed with laughter. No need to pose for photos—the lounge area is the perfect "pre-game warm-up." The curtains filter the mountain light, the wood-paneled walls gently cradle the conversation, and as you chat about who's bringing snacks or who's pretending they can't count tiles, the weekend switch is officially flipped. The real gathering usually happens in the white-walled courtyard. Once you step onto the stone path, the breeze feels crisper than inside. The four of you stand in a small circle to check your watches: start the battle now, or soak up the sun for five more minutes? The swing hangs in the distance like a backdrop, not stealing the spotlight; the protagonists are your footsteps and endless banter. The host is welcoming, luggage storage is convenient, and parking is free with charging spots—the logistics are practically worry-free. Once everyone is here, the game can begin. Push open the door to the game room, and the automatic mahjong table is already waiting quietly. The green felt tabletop, the rows of tiles, and the orange-brown leather chairs create a little universe. Once the curtains are drawn, the quiet of the mountains and the noise of friends are perfectly separated. The soft clatter of shuffling, the crisp sound of tiles being played, and the teasing when someone wins—these are the densest soundtracks of life. Everyone laughs whether they win or lose; no one needs to put on an act. The world of the four of you is gently enclosed by this table, and time becomes incredibly cheap—which is exactly the "weekend exchange rate" we wanted. When your throat is dry and you want to stretch your legs, head to the balcony tea corner under the sloped roof for a break. The kettle is hot, the chairs face the light, and the white walls and tiled eaves outside slowly brighten. Someone reviews that terrible hand they just played, while others are already planning the next meal. As the wind blows, the tension of the game table dissipates into relaxation. There is WiFi in the common areas, smoking is prohibited in public spaces, and the elevator makes moving around easy—no need to lug suitcases up and down stairs. The lounge, courtyard, game room, and balcony are just a few steps apart, creating a complete flow for a friends' gathering that’s more vivid than just pushing a single room. If you still want to move around the next day, Yaohu Town is just a few minutes' drive away, with Longchi Mountain and the little train nearby. But honestly, what many people recap on the way home isn't the tourist spots, but "who was best at playing innocent in that game." Breakfast includes a set Chinese meal, and you can grab a taste of the local flavor after a late-night game before heading out. Digital ID check-in is smooth, front desk hours are clear, and the stay is clean and comfortable. So next time you plan a trip to Yixing, don't just send links to tourist spots. Pull everyone into the rhythm of Chenxi Yayuan's common areas: sofa warm-up, courtyard gathering, table battle, and balcony wind-down. This mountain getaway is truly more addictive than any tourist spot—what's addictive isn't the winning or losing, but the fact that you finally turned your weekend into "our own game."

The healing green mountains and clear waters of Yixing, Wuxi~ — traveler post in Wuxi

The healing green mountains and clear waters of Yixing, Wuxi~

I've been to the shores of Taihu Lake countless times, but my favorite is still Yixing, Wuxi. It has healing green mountains and clear waters, cool stream trekking and rafting, as well as romantic fireworks and spectacular intangible cultural heritage performances 🚗 Recommending two routes that are relaxing and easy, perfect for a two-day weekend micro-vacation Route A: Zhanggong Cave > Yangxian Xishan Town > Niansanwan Route B: Huanglong Mountain Mine Park > Yaohu Town > Longchishan Cycling Park 📍 Zhanggong Cave Rafting, karst caves, lotus ponds, and underground river adventures—it has all the elements of summer You can also experience handmade pottery Arrive early in the morning or after 2:00 PM to avoid the crowds 📷 There is a moon projection installation deep in the cave, perfect for stunning silhouette photos 📍 Yangxian Xishan Town A quaint town with a Jiangnan vibe You must visit Dongpo Pavilion in the evening! You can reach the top in 10 minutes You can overlook the beautiful scenery of Yangxian Lake I recommend staying overnight so you can enjoy the scenery all to yourself early the next morning 📷 The round window frames, the archway by the water, and the stone arch bridge are all great photo spots 📍 Niansanwan The lake water at the hiking entrance is glowing blue! There are two hiking routes: 2 km and 7 km In summer, I recommend taking the 2 km small loop. You won't be disappointed by the view from the top 📷 The "23BAY" sign at the summit + a panoramic view of the 10,000-acre bamboo forest 📍 Huanglong Mountain Mine Park A scenic area converted from a mine pit; the lake is crystal blue on sunny days It also hides a dreamy Monet-style hydrangea garden I really love the wooden boardwalk built over the lake 📷 The aerial view of the boardwalk is the most stunning, but vertical phone shots also look great <imageimageblock>N799.IMG5 📍 Yaohu Town Suitable for the whole family Stream trekking, fireworks, performances... there are rich experiences from morning till night The "train in the clouds" travels through the bamboo forest The "Bird Encounter" show features hundreds of birds in flight The "Dragon Soaring" water show and fireworks make for a spectacular opening I recommend staying at a hotel within the scenic area for a more relaxing two-day trip 📍 Longchishan Cycling Park Located near Yaohu Town It has vast tea plantations and greenways, and the environment is very tranquil There are three reservoirs nearby, and the lake water is as blue as the sea on sunny days 📷 Aerial view of the tea plantation + reservoir boardwalk 🏨 Accommodation Inside Yangxian Xishan Town: Enjoy the scenery all to yourself early the next morning; it's quiet and less crowded Hotels within Yaohu Town: Includes admission ticket, breakfast, and shuttle bus; makes a two-day trip easier Taihuashan village homestays: A hidden gem recommended by the blogger, with a strong rustic atmosphere ⚠️ Tips 🔻 Driving yourself is most convenient, as the attractions are not close to each other 🔻 Zhanggong Cave and Niansanwan require some physical stamina; wear comfortable shoes 🔻 Huanglong Mountain and Longchishan are best visited on sunny days; the lake color is less impressive on cloudy days 🔻 Admission to Yaohu Town is CNY 60 for the individual scenic area; staying at a hotel within the scenic area includes free admission 🔻 It's crowded on summer weekends; try to visit on weekdays for a better experience 🔻 Hydrangea blooming season is June–August; the Monet garden is less impressive after the blooming season 🔻 The 7 km route at Niansanwan requires some physical stamina; if traveling with children, I recommend the 2 km small loop

Its location and atmosphere are perfect for a short getaway. 👍 It's located right by the century-old Qingming Bridge, offering a quiet retreat in the heart of the city. You can use your room key to enter Nanchang Street directly from the hotel's side gate. ✅ "No two Hotel Indigo properties are alike." Each one weaves local neighborhood culture into its details, and this one is no exception. At the end of the lobby lounge, there are five arched bridge design elements, symbolizing the Qingming Bridge, Bodu Bridge, Dagong Bridge, Kuatang Bridge, and Baota Bridge, along with inspiration from the "Baojie Twin Rainbows." It's a very photogenic spot with a story to tell. 📷 The hotel room key is quite interesting—it's a hand-painted fridge magnet that looks like a piece of creative merchandise. 🎨 You can see elements of Wuxi's scenic spots and bridge designs throughout the room. So far, I've found my favorite small town in Jiangnan... — traveler post in Wuxi

So far, I've found my favorite small town in Jiangnan...

Honestly, I've visited plenty of ancient towns in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai area—Zhouzhuang, Wuzhen, Xitang... They're beautiful, but they're also really crowded 😭. That was until I went to Yixing Yao Hu Town last weekend; I've been back for three days and I'm still scrolling through my photos and grinning ☺️. The bamboo forest train, the sculling boats, the Zisha pagoda, the evening water show and fireworks... It feels like this place has secretly hidden away all the gentleness and romance of Jiangnan 💖. Save this tried-and-tested guide, and you can just copy it and go~ 🚂💨 🚄 How to get there, don't get caught by the last bus‼️ Driving is the most comfortable: about 2.5 hours from Shanghai/Hangzhou, about 1.5 hours from Nanjing. Navigate to "Yao Hu Town Tourist Center P1 Parking Lot." Parking is capped at 5 yuan/24 hours—it's incredibly reasonable. High-speed train to Yixing Station: Turn right after exiting, and there's a free tourist shuttle that goes directly to the town (about 30 minutes). There's also the 206 bus for 8 yuan, but the last bus is at 5:40 PM. If you stay for the night view, you won't be able to get back, so make sure to plan your time carefully 😭. A taxi takes about 30 minutes and costs 35–50 yuan, which is more cost-effective if you're in a group. 🎫 Buy the right tickets and save the price of a milk tea Adult admission is 60 yuan. Concession tickets for students/seniors aged 60–69/children 1.2–1.5 meters tall are 30 yuan. Admission is free for children under 1.2 meters and seniors over 70. I highly recommend just going for the 85 yuan combo ticket (admission + Cloud Train), which saves you 5 yuan compared to buying them separately. If you want to ride the sculling boat, go for the 135 yuan all-inclusive package, which covers the boat ticket, train, and admission—it's the most hassle-free option. Staying at a hotel in the scenic area usually includes free admission, so ask when booking to save where you can 💖. 🚂 The Cloud Train, a scene straight out of a Miyazaki film It's a 6.2 km loop that takes about 50 minutes, passing through bamboo forests, tea fields, and tunnels. The carriages are retro red and white, and if you sit by the window, the breeze smells like tea 🍃. Sitting on the right side offers the best view, and the train around 4:00 PM is perfect for capturing the sunset atmosphere 📸. A single trip is 30 yuan, or you can get unlimited rides all day for 60 yuan—train enthusiasts should just go for the all-day ticket. 🗺️ One-day lazy itinerary (no sun exposure, no backtracking) Enter the park at 2:00 PM → Take photos at the Flower Realm (misty flower sea + mirror water features; great for Hanfu/New Chinese style photos) → Cloud Train loop → Stroll through Longyao Street to visit Zisha shops + DIY pottery throwing (finished products can be mailed) → Walk along the lakeside boardwalk and watch the Zisha pagoda reflected in the lake → Find a spot before 7:30 PM for the Dragon Water Show → Head back after seeing the night lights. If you stay overnight, add the sculling boat the next morning. Watching the boatwoman row through the white walls and black tiles for a slow 30-minute ride is the true way to experience Jiangnan 🚤✨. 🌙 The Dragon Water Show, the highlight that makes the ticket price worth it It usually starts at 8:00 PM, featuring water curtains, lasers, and flames. Seeing the giant dragon "break through the water" from the lake will give you goosebumps 😱. Fireworks aren't every day; they're usually added on Fridays and Saturdays. On weekdays, there's only the water show, so make sure to pick the right day if you want to see fireworks ‼️ Don't crowd the central bridge for a spot; go to the "Jingyuanli" open-air cinema area to sit and watch—it's more comfortable and less tiring. Specific showtimes are subject to the daily announcement on the town's mini-program, so check it as soon as you enter the park to avoid a wasted trip. 🥢 What to eat without getting disappointed Snacks at the Yao Hu Market average 10–30 yuan. The black rice siu mai, mugwort cakes, Zisha cakes, and preserved vegetable pork trotters are all worth trying—eating while walking is the best. For a proper meal, go to the Wuse Yibang Restaurant; it's about 80 yuan per person, and they do local dishes well. Yao Hu Auntie's BBQ is open until midnight, which is perfect for a late-night snack after the water show, though it's a bit pricey—it depends on your budget. 🏠 To stay or not, depends on if you want to slow down A one-day trip is enough to cover the core attractions, but if you want to see the morning mist and take a sculling boat without rushing, staying overnight is better. The Yao Hu Hotel is in the center of the scenic area, with lake-view rooms starting at about 600 yuan including breakfast—you can see the lake and the pagoda right from your window. The Yunsu Homestay has tea field view rooms for about 300 yuan/night, which offers better value. Staying at a hotel often includes free admission + free shuttle service, so confirm before booking to avoid unnecessary expenses. ⚠️ A few life-saving tips, every word is sincere Don't rush for the bus after the night view; the last 206 bus is at 5:40 PM. If you miss it, take a taxi or stay overnight—don't gamble on it 😭. The ground at the Fish Scale Dam/Blue Crystal Creek is slippery, so wear non-slip shoes and don't try to be brave in flip-flops. The water show and fireworks are subject to the daily announcement on the mini-program; this guide lists the regular times, so I'm not responsible for temporary adjustments. Book the Zisha DIY in advance; you might not get a spot if you queue on-site. Finally, when posting on Trip.com, remember to use your own original, watermark-free photos, write about your real experience, and include specific details about tickets, routes, and prices. The platform is strict about originality and practicality, and you'll miss out on incentives if you just piece together copied content 💖. 💖 One last sincere word Yao Hu Town isn't one of those "old and crumbling" ancient towns; it's a newly built place that takes the romance of Jiangnan very seriously 🍃✨. The 50 minutes the train spends passing through the bamboo forest, the 30 minutes the sculling boat spends gliding across the lake, the 20 minutes the water show explodes before your eyes—you'll feel that for a weekend in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai area, there's finally a place where you can be gently embraced without having to squeeze through crowds. Before it gets packed, pick a Friday or Saturday and go see a Yao Hu with fireworks~ 🌙💫

Forget Suzhou and Hangzhou—I’ve fallen for this underrated Jiangnan gem!! Yaohu Town.

While the beauty of Suzhou and Hangzhou lives in poetry, Yaohu Town’s charm is tucked away in the valleys. Instead of relying on ancient estates, it masterfully weaves Yixing’s mountains, lakes, pottery, bamboo, and tea into a living tapestry. By day, it’s a lush green wonderland; by night, it transforms into a dazzling festival of lights. As visitors often say: this is what Jiangnan is meant to be. 🚂 The Train in the Clouds A 6.2km track winds through bamboo forests, tea plantations, tunnels, and across lakes, taking about 50 minutes. The daytime ride feels like stepping into a Studio Ghibli film, while at night, it becomes a "Fireworks Express"—two totally different vibes. Tip: Sit by the window on the right for the best views. 🔥 The Night Scene is the Real Showstopper The "Dragon Rising Water Show" uses a 100-meter water curtain and laser projections to bring a soaring dragon to life on the lake, with fireworks on weekends. Right next door, the "Ode to Kiln Fire" party features intangible cultural heritage performances like Nuo dance, fire pots, and fire skirt dances. It’s peak Chinese-style romance. 🎫 Practical Info 📍 Location: Yangxian Ecological Resort, Zhangzhu Town, Yixing City 🎫 Tickets: Adult 60 RMB; Package (Entry + Train + Boat) 135 RMB is a better deal ⏰ Hours: 09:00 - 22:00 (Entry after 15:00 is perfect) 🚗 Transport: 30-min taxi from Yixing High-Speed Rail Station; for self-driving, navigate to "Yaohu Town P1 Parking," only 5 RMB for 24 hours. 💡 Tips: Arrive at the east side of Chunbo Bridge 30 minutes early to snag a spot for the water show; wear light-colored dresses for the best photos against the water scenery; stay at a local guesthouse to catch the morning mist and night views. Compared to the fame of Suzhou and Hangzhou, Yaohu Town feels like a quiet, delightful surprise 🏮

Su Dongpo was right: compared to Wuzhen, I love the hidden gem of Yixing even more

Every time I go to Wuzhen, the massive crowds scare me off😭 It's full of trendy shops and feels too commercialized; I can't find the original tranquility of Jiangnan at all. Until I discovered the hidden gem of Yixing. Known in ancient times as Yangxian, it's also the place where Su Dongpo dreamed of retiring🌿 "I'll buy fields in Yangxian for my old age, drawn from the start by the beauty of its streams and mountains." Only after arriving do you truly understand the comfort in those verses~ It hasn't been overdeveloped. White walls and black tiles are hidden among bamboo forests, lakes, and mountains🏞️ There are very few tourists, and everywhere you look is pristine scenery. Strolling around slowly, the local vibe is just perfect✨ ✅ Must-visit list, follow this to avoid tourist traps👇 1️⃣ Yaohu Town Take a sculling boat out on the lake🛶. On weekends, there's a lively intangible cultural heritage market—the atmosphere is incredible! 2️⃣ Shushan Ancient South Street An old street famous for purple clay pottery, filled with artisan workshops🏺 You can try making a purple clay teapot yourself. The old street is quiet and rustic, without noisy crowds~ 3️⃣ Huanglongshan Mine Site Park A free, off-the-beaten-path secret spot! Few people, quiet scenery, and serene mountains🍃 Every photo you take is healing📸 4️⃣ Yada Yangxian Xishan You must take the 7 km lakeside train🚞 Traveling through the lakes and mountains feels just like a scene from a Studio Ghibli movie, and the sunset is breathtaking🌅 5️⃣ Bamboo Sea Scenic Area 10,000 acres of rolling bamboo forests🎋—a natural oxygen bar~ Walking along the emerald corridor, surrounded by greenery, you'll feel completely relaxed😌 💡 Travel tips Don't rush your itinerary when visiting Yixing! It's perfect for slow walks, drinking tea, zoning out, and enjoying a slow vacation☕ Try to avoid holidays to fully enjoy this tranquility~ For a short weekend trip in the Yangtze River Delta, stop crowding into the popular ancient towns! This small city has both beautiful landscapes and rich culture—it's definitely worth a second visit💯

Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot

Positive review. The only downside is the inconvenient transportation, especially after the event when crowds surge out. The free shuttle bus took us to a dark, dingy place, and getting a taxi was extremely difficult.

Nianhua Bay

The room was very clean, and the facilities were relatively new. There was parking available right in front of the building. The owner was very welcoming, and it was close to the attractions. Overall, it was a great experience. I forgot to take pictures of the room, so here are some photos of the attractions instead.

Huishan Ancient Town · Jichang Garden

If it's not too crowded, it's quite worth a stroll. There are small bridges and flowing water, the Second Spring Under Heaven, and Xihui Park connected to it. However, the park closes at 5 pm, which is quite early. You'll probably need about an hour and a half to explore it.

Lingshan Buddhist Scenic Spot

This attraction is definitely worth a visit! When we came, there weren't many tourists, and the electric carts saved us time and effort. A pleasant surprise was that the area around the Buddha's feet had an elevator, which was very convenient for visitors. Traveling during off-peak hours made for a fantastic experience! Although there were quite a few steps, I was able to manage them easily, even with my average stamina. I highly recommend experiencing it.

Lingshan Grand Buddha

Excellent! The uncle was very friendly, and the breakfast he made was delicious. The location was very close to the Big Buddha. Coming back was also very convenient. A very pleasant experience, I would stay there again next time.

Li Garden

Since my hotel was near Liyuan Garden, I went there as well. Perhaps it wasn't the right season or the weather was bad, as it felt a bit desolate, and many of the flowers had withered. It must be very beautiful if I went during a better season.

Yao Hu Town

Yaohu Town is picturesque, surrounded by bamboo forests, exuding the poetic charm of Jiangnan. A miniature train winds its way through the woods. With its rich ceramic culture, every step reveals a new vista, offering a tranquil and romantic escape – a perfect place for relaxation and a vacation.

Nanchang Street

Nanchang Street is more beautiful at night than during the day. The lanterns are lit, and the old houses along the canal are reflected in the water. The street is lined with restaurants and small shops, and some alleys are quieter. You can watch the boats go back and forth on the bridge and hear the sounds of Suzhou storytelling drifting from the teahouses. There are many street food stalls; try the magnolia cakes and plum blossom cakes. The street is lively but not too noisy, perfect for an evening stroll after dinner.

Qingming Bridge Ancient Grand Canal Scenic Area

This must be the culture and commerce that gradually formed along the banks of the canal. The total length is several kilometers, but I only walked less than a kilometer. Various small shops line the canal, and you can also see elderly people who run small businesses on their own property. It's best to go at night when the atmosphere is nice.
