I spent a week at the Fairmont Mara club. I have stayed in many hotels and I have done a few safaris, this was an experience beyond anything I ever imagined. Usually after a few days I tend to miss the comfort of my home. This was not the case at the Fairmont. I never even thought about going home and was surprised when the last day was upon me. I have hardly ever felt this welcomed and looked after. The entire staff was absolutely wonderful, warm and kind. Firstly, the driver/guide who was assigned to me was truly remarkable. I have met excellent guides before but this man was something else, he is in an another league entirely. Alfred is a Masai, so he knew the area to a level I can’t even claim to know my own hometown. I did all my game drives with him (including night game drive). I also did a bush walk which was an unforgettable experience. He patiently taught me about the plants and showed me the tracks of the animals (we got to see hippos quite close and many other animals). I dare say I learnt a great deal from Alfred. I also did a bike ride and on that occasion Charles and Ruben went with me, they were both really great. That 24km bike ride was rather fun and challenging which was exactly what I needed. The room was luxurious and comfortable. Everything is provided including an excellent hairdryer, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, shaving kit, cotton buds/earbuds and a safe. The bedding is very comfortable, I slept soundly despite it being in a tented camp. The extra touch of leaving a hot water bottle in the bed to warm it up before bedtime was the most wonderful experience. Geoffrey looked after my room throughout and he did an incredible job. The food was exceptional every time. I dare say I ate far more than I should have. The hotel has a garden where they cultivate many of their vegetables, fruit and herbs, this means everything is very fresh. They were also very accommodating of dietary requirements. I don’t mean just making do, they actually went out of their way to offer options that not only were gluten free and lactose but also delicious. The staff at the restaurant were all incredible. Rose and Mary were always so welcoming and kind. On my last day, they brought a cake and sang for me, I was incredibly touched by the gesture, made me feel sad to leave. A great thank you to all the team, including Nancy and Mercy. There were also other people who contributed to my wonderful holiday, I unfortunately am not good at remembering names.. If you are looking for a warm and welcoming oasis in the middle of the savannah, this is it, look no further. Though everything was perfect, if I had to say one thing could be improved is the lack of active activities or a gym. I’d say it would have been great to have a small gym to exercise a bit perhaps. However, I appreciate there isn’t much space to set this up but that would be a great addition. I will return, that’s for sure!
