Pestana Carlton Madeira Ocean Resort Hotel Reviews

The hotel is old, but everything looks nice and shabby. A lot of stairs to the sea, but also there is elevator. Normal breakfast, a lot of pastry, but for my tasty could be more fresh vegetables, avocado and etc.. Nice, big rooms with cozy doors lile from movie lord of the ring.

Very great hotel and excellent amenities. In addition, great diving center.

Relaxing resort. Good location, 20 min walk to downtown. Reasonable breakfast.

The best hotel in Funchal

Unfortunately, we were not really satisfied. The location was beautiful! However, the hotel was much too big to feel comfortable... breakfast was extremely loud, the staff were overwhelmed and the buffet was completely scattered. In the hotel's own restaurants, you were pretty ripped off by being repeatedly offered bread and water, which was ultimately added to the bill! You also pay a 10% service charge for a service that was no different to that in a normal restaurant, where you don't have to pay. For a 5-star hotel, it offers very little and is unfortunately only interested in profit and not the well-being of the guests. Not recommended for the price! What a pity....

I visited this hotel with close friends and all of them were very satisfied. I will definitely come back again.

Cost-effective, everything! Just the bed is too soft.

Recently stayed at this hotel for a night. Great location in Funchal. This is a resort style hotel, so there are activites to do. A few big pools here, plus the option to go down at the beach. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Room was spacious, old dated furniture. TV in our room did not turn on. Tried to call the front desk twice but they never answered. Bathroom was a bit dirty from previous customers. Beds are extremely hard and uncomfortable. Still recommended however.

Spent a week at the Pestana Carton from the 10-17th September, this was our first trip to Madeira and we loved the island and the Hotel - from the moment we arrived the staff on reception were fantastic, we were offered a room upgrade to a Junior Suite at a small cost per person per night, upgrading from a sea room and the suite was fantastic, very spacious with a double balcony, it was our wedding anniversary so this made the visit even more special. Hotel facilities were second to none, really enjoyed the salt water swimming pools, hotel was spotless and very clean. Facilities around the hotel were also great and within close walking distance from the hotel, went on some lovely trips during our stay (Magic Eco Catameran) to see the whales and dolphins, went were so lucky to see the pilot whales and dolphins in their natural habitat, really enjoyed the chair lift up to Monte Palace, these gardens are well worth a visit and following this the baskets down the hill which were fun. The market in Funchal is also worth a visit particularly on a Friday which the flowers, products, Fish and Fruits. I would love to come back to this Hotel and Madeira - you did not disappoint. 5 Stars from us.

We liked this hotel, we didn’t love it. The staff are friendly and helpful and the rooms are spacious with everything you need. I feel the hotel needs a refresh, the carpets are old and worn and all the towels need replacing. On day one you are given big, fluffy pool towels & from then on they are replaced with thin, small brown ones! Also, housekeeping are supposed to replace the pool towels daily after breakfast in your room but as this occurs around midday or later then you are already by the pool by then with yesterday’s towels, there are no alternatives, it’s the worst system ever, we talked to reception about it but they just agreed with us. Bring your own hairdryer as the one supplied is just awful. It’s a 15 minute walk into Funchal & a €6 taxi back, the local restaurants are ok but quite expensive. The pools are lovely and the sun-beds are relatively comfortable if a little hard. Breakfast was good although the bacon was not, sparking wine was also available to help yourself to at breakfast time, a popular choice! All in all I probably would return if the price was right but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

The view from our room was spectacular! The bed was so comfortable and all linen etc, extremely clean . Loads of sunbeds available and beach towels supplied in the room also dressing gowns. Great choice for breakfast! Friendly and helpful staff. The hotel is ideally located a short stroll from the centre of Funchal. Two very small niggles with coffee and water not supplied excepton arrival, but when I raised this it was then supplied daily. Exchange of beach towels is in room not at the pool are. Otherwise a fabulous stay and I look forward to returning!

Folks trust me look no more this is as good as it gets ,Ritz of Madeira and ive stayed at several Ritz hotels. The stafff ,the food ,the property is a small sample of luxury. This place has all of the amenities needed as well!Hair salon,convenience store ,travel planners ,pool bar and several concourses to eat and relax to read etc etc

Overall the hotel is lovely, room is massive , staff very friendly and helpful, food has been great. There are plenty of outdoor space with 2 outdoor pools to choose from. One small issue that has let it down is the bathroom tap…… when was the last time this was cleaned ?

My husband and I have been to some of the best hotels in the world from George V in Paris to the Sands in Grenada...at least we thought we had until we came to the Pestana Carlton in Madeira Funchal Portugal. We came for our 30th wedding anniversary and asked ahead whether an upgrade would be possible. Upon arrival we had been provided with an upgrade. The staff were happy, smiling, welcoming and professional beautiful people. We were met with chocolate strawberries and champagne. At dinner we were presented with a huge chocolate and coconut cake. The whole restaurant applauded our celebratory meal and the singer mentioned our special time. My husband cried and an elderly gentleman came over and hugged him. Of course, we all cried then. We were given a free of charge late checkout which was mist surprising given most hotels charge. I know I'm going on a bit but it is all true. I cannot compliment this place enough. We will now never go anywhere else. We would like to thank all the staff at the Pestana for giving us such a memorable holiday on such a joyous occasion. We love you too you all!! We are booking another week in September.
