Smiths at Gretna Green Hotel

I booked this hotel so that I could have my hair done for my wedding in the salon, I arrived and was told I was in a cottage down the road - I had booked a junior suite. They changed my room to a family room in the hotel. The room was freezing cold as the air con had broken so it took a while to find a suitable room. We moved and the new room was boiling hot. We just stayed there as it was too late in the evening. The rooms looked a bit shabby looking and in need of a refurb. The new room only had 3 small lamps so the room was almost dark which is no good for getting ready! I was told they had no spare lamps (even though there was a lamp in the old room?). I was also woken at 5am with a truck at the back of the hotel unloading loudly. They offered us complimentary breakfast but we did say none of us would be eating breakfast. I would advise all brides to book the Gretna hall hotel - my husband and others were staying there and it was fantastic! The salon at the smiths hotel was really really good.

This was our 2nd stay at this hotel. Unlike our first stay reception staff were friendly and informative. Our room was very nice on the 2nd floor, was spacious with a great comfortable chair and good size tv. Bed was on the firm side but fine We had dinner in the restaurant and that’s where the hotel comes into its own. Quality of the food is outstanding, good service and plenty on the menu for most to find something to their taste. We then had drinks in the lounge area which was large and airy. Breakfast was good quality buffet both hot and cold. The only thing I’d say is the hotel is busy with weddings so the bar and restaurant are busy with wedding guests and it’s a bit of a thoroughfare, but it didn’t bother us. Can’t wait to go back

Just got back home from our 2 night stay for our wedding at Smith’s Penthouse. Having read previous reviews I was a little worried but wow! What an amazing experience. Our wedding planner rang us the morning we were due to arrive to talk me through our stay and wedding. We had booked the afternoon tea for the day of arrival. It was lovely although I doubt two people could ever eat all those cakes 😁 We were blown away with the Penthouse Suite it was stunning and smelt lovely. Unfortunately on the day of our wedding the lift broke which meant numerous trips up and down the stairs. Breakfast was lovely something for everyone. The day of our wedding - housekeeping arrived early to get the room ready. Then our wedding planner arrived to set up the balcony and sort our music. She was absolutely lovely and calming. I’m sure her name was Lesley!! 😬 We’d opted for a religious ceremony purely because it was cheaper but we are so glad we did. Keith Teasdale married us and what a delightful friendly man he was. He conducted our ceremony perfectly. Explaining about the Gretna traditions. We loved the ceremony. The meal afterwards was delicious and we spent the remainder of the evening in the bar. It was the perfect wedding we wouldn’t have changed a thing. The staff at the hotel were so friendly and nothing was too much. Thank you so much ☺️

Just had a beautiful 3 course festive menu meal at the restaurant in Smiths Hotel. Meal was faultless, all three courses were fabulous, all beautifully cooked and presented, and all piping hot. Staff all very friendly and attentive, highly recommend. Thank you.

It is difficult to review as, according to Dean, each element of the Gretna Green package is independent of each other yet we are unable to review each area independently; hence 3 stars. Let us begin with the Handfasting ceremony; utterly fantastic!. Professional yet emotive, personal and evocative, couldn't have asked for more. Would definitely recommend. Then the restaurant at Smiths Hotel; at no time did anyone check how the food was. This usually indicates two things; they don't care OR they have a well earned confidence in what they do. I can assure that it is the latter. Outstanding service, fresh ingredients cooked to perfection and served by friendly and very knowledgeable staff. Every course was perfect, cocktails sublime. Again, wouldn't hesitate to recommend. The hotel reception staff went above and beyond and were empathetic to our concerns, absolutely faultless, trying their very best to rectify issues; could not be faulted. And now, unfortunately, the downside that I invite the combined CEO to address, as suggested by Dean. The room we had was not only inadequate but also a death trap. Advertised as a romantic couples experience; yet the room has one comfortable chair, one hot chocolate, one biscuit etc. Guaranteed to cause couples friction. And then we have the death trap in the form of an iron that pours water out the flex port, bare wires at the plug and a socket that cannot be switched off so remains constantly live (imagery available and already submitted to substantiate). Whilst a new iron was immediately offered it rather defeats the purpose when the guest has been fried by electric shock. There are screws sitting, at head hight, proud of the walls waiting to catch the unwary in the dark and cause the most horrific injuries. I invite the CEO John Holliday and the sitting members of the Mackie-Houston family to explain and justify why guests are exposed to such highly dangerous risks as, when asked, Dean could only offer the weak excuse that each area was independent so the hotel must be held accountable. Or are John Holliday and the Mackie-Houston family too high up to care about the risk to life/serious injury of their guests? Over to you.....

Took my money even though I cancelled die to I'll health, terrible and disgusting service, would NOT recommend at all. I tried on many occasions to get a refund but they are cold hearted and didn't care at all. I never expected to be treated as bad as this, horrible behaviour.
