The Westin Palace, Madrid

As a Marriott Titanium / Lifetime Platinum Elite Guest, our family [husband, wife and two young daughters] decided to visit Madrid, Spain to start our month-long 2023 summer vacation in Europe. We spent five (5) nights at Westin Palace Madrid using our Bonvoy points in late May / early June 2023. Please see the thirty-eight (38) photos we posted with this review of all aspects of the hotel. Within days after making our five (5) night stay using Marriott Bonvoy points approximately ten (10) months prior to our arrival date, we emailed General Manager, Pablo Flores and advised him of our future stay as well as our special requests, including our request for an Executive Suite, which would comfortably host our family of four. Within hours of our email, we received a thoughtful reply Paloma Hidalgo, Director of Rooms, whom immediately provided us with a complimentary guaranteed upgrade to an Executive Suite and further, Ms. Hidalgo readily granted all of our other special requests. The prompt response did not come as a surprise to us given how active the management of this property is in reading and promptly replying to past guests on Trip Advisor as well as the Marriott Bonvoy website, which is but a mere sign of management’s commitment to exemplary customer service. Not surprisingly, we were overjoyed with such a response and really looked forward to our future stay at The Westin Palace Madrid. This gorgeous historic hotel is magnificently located in Madrid overlooking the Neptune Fountain and less than a three minute walk to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, less than a five minute walk to the Prado Museum and less than a ten minute walk to the Reina Sofia Museum. It is also extremely close to Retiro Park and is within an easy 15 minute walk to Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and the Gran Via as well as many bars, restaurant, trendy cafés, market and other cultural attractions. You can easily walk everywhere throughout the entire city but public transportation options abound in close proximity to the hotel as well. Our initial visit to the Westin Palace Madrid did not disappoint, especially when the hotel accommodated our extremely early check-in (before 9:00 am). The check-in process with Ms. Hidalgo, Estefanía Martinez, Front Office Assistant Manager and Juan at the reception desk was a breeze. Further, Ms. Martinez was kind enough to personally escort us to our suite and show us all of the features and amenities of same. This was very thoughtful on the part of Ms. Martinez and very much appreciated. Throughout our entire five (5) night stay, Ms. Hidalgo and Ms. Martinez were especially helpful and friendly. We simply loved our Palace Executive Suite with slightly over 1,000 square feet in total space with a sublime view of the Neptune Fountain; it was truly remarkable. Further, upon entering, we discovered that Mr. Flores and his team were kind enough to provide us with several 1 liter bottles of both sparking water (Vichy Catalan) and sti

DoubleTree by Hilton Madrid-Prado

We spent one week in late April 2023 at the Doubletree Madrid Prado on the first leg of a four week visit to Spain. We were attracted to the hotel because of its location, modest size and many positive reviews. Our expectations were high and they were exceeded! We were warmly greeted and efficiently checked in on arrival. Because we were staying for seven nights, we had booked a King Superior room and were assigned room 301 which was spacious, well furnished and full of light and we were very comfortable there. Perhaps due to its size (only about sixty rooms over five floors), its understated lobby and its exceptional level of service, the hotel has an intimacy that that we found very appealing. The location in the upscale Las Letras district was perfect for us as walkers: very near the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen museums and within walking distance of Retiro Park, the boutiques of Calle Serrano and even the Royal Palace and Atocha Station. With the help of the front desk staff (especially Cristina) we found some great restaurants (of which our favourite was Vinoteca Moratin, reviewed separately) and tapas bars within five to ten minutes walk from the hotel. Because of our Hilton status we enjoyed a generous and graciously and efficiently served continental breakfast (excellent coffee, juices, fresh fruit, toast and assorted pastries) every morning; if we were to make one suggestion about breakfast, it would be to add a protein (yogurt or cheese or a selection of meats) to the continental buffet. Overall, we were delighted with our stay at the Doubletree Madrid Prado and we would stay there again if we return to Madrid. We recommend it without reservation to anyone looking for a well-located, upscale but understated, unpretentious and reasonably priced hotel in Madrid.

Ibis Styles Madrid Prado

The pros: Great location; helpful staff and clean. The cons: I have stayed in Ibis Style hotels in Laos and the UK before and have found them to be good value for money. Sadly, this time, I was highly disappointed. We were in Madrid for business and I ended up being given a single room. The room was the size of a children’s small bedroom; just room for a bed and not much else with the window overlooking an internal staircase. Bizarrely, the floor’s corridor was very wide .. so why so much room for a corridor and not much space for the rooms themselves is beyond me. Anyway, the decor is tired and needs an update and I would argue Ibis management in Spain needs to rethink the use of the space the next time the hotel is renovated. But the most off-putting thing was an appalling smell from the shower drain; so strong it made me gag. I alerted the front desk clerk who was very sweet and said the hotel was fully-booked and unable to change rooms. I asked that someone look at the drain the next day (which they did). After emptying all of my shower gel down the drain in an attempt to offset the smell, I headed to bed. Just as I was about to go to sleep, the front desk called at 11:30pm and said a room was free. But I was too tired to take up the offer. The next day, hotel maintenance took a look and agreed there was an issue and then I was told it had been fixed. The smell was a little bit better but did not disappear altogether. In any case, I did check Trip Advisor reviews and I was not the first to complain about strong smells from the drains in the bathroom. Clearly there is an issue with the hotel’s plumbing which needs to be fixed. Conclusion: Look elsewhere for an excellent-priced hotel in central Madrid.

Hostal San Antonio

After leaving HOSTALIN and its cash-hungry receptionist, to the point of wanting to rip me off, I headed to hostal SAN ANTONIO. The check in being at 2 p.m., I could only leave my luggage. Not a place to hang out in this kind of Hostal. After drinking tea and then wandering for more than 2 hours in the freezing streets of Madrid, I showed up at the hostal. Formalities carried out and room settled: bad surprise. While I had requested a double room with a double bed (request confirmed by the booking site) I found myself in a small room with 2 beds. Moreover, the room is not only located right next to the reception but also opposite the front door. I went to ask the owner of the premises for explanations, who told me that only this room was available and tried to give me an explanation involving the booking site. Too bad he told me all this after I paid for the room. Last night, between the comings and goings of customers and the chill caught in the streets of Madrid, it was not peaceful. The next day: sick! Check out at 11 a.m. and only bus to Paris at 8 p.m. When I tried to explain my situation to the owner, she pretended not to understand anything. I understood that I could leave my luggage but not my person. Nothing was offered to me, for example to leave the premises at noon as was however specified in my reservation. I was forced to leave, feverish and weak. I make thanks for my day spent in Madrid in freezing cold.

The surrounding environment has an ancient European style, food is cheap, linger in the narrow and lively streets, and time seems to be still in the middle of the last century. But there is no place to park

The location is very good, there are bars and restaurants. Although the parking lot is relatively expensive, 25 per night, but many nearby hotels have no parking lot, it is impossible to find a parking space in such a city center without a parking lot, and even loading and unloading luggage is troublesome, so the parking lot is a plus (if Just loading and unloading luggage, you can borrow the parking lot to get off, because parking in front of the hotel is definitely a ticket). The service attitude of the hotel is very good. There is often a handsome guy + a beautiful woman. I have stayed twice and the attitude is very enthusiastic. There are bars and restaurants downstairs of the hotel. If you want to have a quiet drink, it is very suitable. The restaurant's products are not bad, but the price is high in this area. I forgot to take pictures in the room, but the safe is very useful. You can swipe your own card as the key. It is advanced. There is a very strange point that there will be a basin of sand on the TV cabinet in the room. I don’t know what aesthetics it is.

There isn't really much to say about this hotel as it is very average so I will just lost the pros and cons Pros Great location. Very comfortable bed and bedding. Good shower. Cons Very tired decor. The white paint work is marked, grubby and chipped. Rooms feel soulless. Staff are indifferent to you. Didn't find them very helpful and I would go as far to say that one was actually rude and could do with some more training.

Initially we went to the wrong place. Hotel Sardinero looks lovely btw! Hostel Sardinero is fine for what we paid. We had a street terrace. The aircon is extra money. We needed it so we paid but it did leak everywhere. The TV volume was stuck on low so we could barely hear it. The receptionist was very nice and we got by even though she spoke no English. She let us leave our luggage there after checkout. The entrance is through a common area with a elevator.
