It was spacious, artfully designed. Loved the use of materials. Dining was conveniennt and so was Onsen. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Amazing Minatoya Cafe, bar and restaurant attached to the boutique hotel - Soil. Specialising in woodfire cooked meats and vegetables and striving to incorporate many local ingredients in their dishes. Small and larger dishes were all great for sharing. We tried many dishes including dessert, and we loved everything. Very high quality food - especially enjoyed the woodfired pork dish. The red and white wines were also very good. We only speak English but the lovely young staff were great. Our waiter introduced each dish, explaining the local ingredients and discussing the wines and local Onomichi craft beer made with Oranges! We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Breakfast the next morning was very yummy too. Thank you, we had a great stay at Soil.

Surprised to see a poor review for this place as this was one of the best places on our stay in Japan. Booked the multi bed room for my family and the kids (ages 8 & 11) absolutely loved the upper bed cubicles. Each cubicle came with a comfy bed and desk area that runs the length of the bed with a reading light, UBS/plugs receptables and privacy curtains. Shower and bathroom facilities are good and you are sharing the property with only a handful of others. The staff at the restaurant and at check in and check out were some of the friendliest most helpful people we came across on our entire trip. The roof top deck has wonderful views and the food and vibe in the restaurant was excellent. If we ever come back to cycle the Shiminami Kaido again this is where we will be staying.

We had a lovely stay at Soil Setoda after riding bikes on the Shimanami Kaido from Onomichi. I think the bike ride between the two was about 35km, and in the heat of summer, that was enough! We had beautiful view from our room on the water's edge, and the room itself was good looking and comfortable. We had 35 degree celsius days for the three weeks we spent in Japan. We learnt good air conditioning from the bad. This one was good! The other really lovely aspect is the amazing food served. We had the short course dinner and then breakfast the next morning in the downstairs restaurant/cafe. Both were superb. I also think it was the best coffee in our three week trip!
