We chose The Swan because of the central location, its reputation and its history: we were not disappointed. In our experience, the staff were all friendly and wanting to help. Particular mention of Martin, the General Manager, who we chanced to meet in the car park when he offered to help us with our luggage. Of all the hotels we have stayed in, The Swan offered the best genuine choice of gluten-free meals in the evening. This was true for starters, mains and deserts. Breakfast was a little more problematic but at least the GF bread didn't have the dreaded "grey ring" inside the crust from lengthy storage in the freezer and after a couple of days, the chef made up some porridge. The "room" we stayed in astonished us. It consisted of an enormous bath and shower room, a separate WC, a large lounge and an exceedingly large bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe. Perhaps more than anything else, it had a full view of the west facade of the cathedral across the green. Technically, it was Room 26, but Hyacinth Bucket would have used (probably often and loudly) the correct nomenclature of the Cathedral Suite. Should you make a wise choice and stay here, please note the warning about the limited number of spaces available in the car park. Access to the parking area is tricky but perfectly doable. We stayed four nights and managed to park on site each time.

Beautiful stay, great room, fantastic staff. located right in the center of Wells opposite the Cathedral and just around the corner from the pub that was used in Hot Fuzz. Stayed in room 49 which I can't recommend highly enough. free-standing bath and the room is on two levels

Great hotel, our upgraded room overlooked the cathedral which was lovely and we had a drink in the outside area (across the road from the hotel) which also overlooks the cathedral. Great room if somewhat expensive and the breakfast is no longer cooked to order which was a bit disappointing but having said that the help yourself breakfast was very good. The breakfast coffee on the other hand is absolutely awful, like drinking dirty dish water!

Located close to centre of Wells, with on-site parking (tricky entrance for larger cars!). Room in the Coach House was OK, but noisy doors banging early in the morning. Service in the bar in the evening, and restaurant at breakfast was slow. A large party of tourists were there at the same time as us, which caused a few problems.

Overall we had a very pleasant stay though I think their bar prices are a bit on the steep side. Not a lot of parking spaces & that was one of the reason we stayed here again we just about found one at 3pm! This hotel has a lot of stairs & a very awkward fire door at the top & this time we stayed in room 23 which even had steps 3 up to the bathroom. It's a very good base for visiting Wells & it's attractions if you can park at the hotel, we also like a visit to the Outlet at Street but if you cannot manage to park there I am not sure where you can park as the town is full of restrictions?

A great hotel in Wells nice rooms very well placed. We had a very good meal here too. While the whole meal was excellent, the deserts created by Ruby were truly superb I had a Rocky Road which was delicious my wife had textures of raspberry, which was brilliant and made me wish I could have 2 desserts. So good.

We have just spend a night in the Swan, Wells, a perfectly situated hotel with on-site parking, although we recommend you get there early to get a parking space. Our room, number 62, in the Coach House annexe was huge and very comfortable, with plenty of storage space for those staying longer than one night, plus a large wardrobe, a settee and two armchairs. The bathroom had a huge mirror over the hand basin which should have lit up but didn’t. On reporting this to Reception they apparently knew all about it, so it might have been good to warn us in advance as we spent some time trying to figure out how to switch it on, and the bathroom was slightly gloomy without the additional light (not good enough to apply makeup). A handrail or grab rail in the shower would have been welcome too. Number 62 is on the front of the hotel, with a view over the High Street, which was noisy with delivery vehicles, including Costa Coffee next door at 1.45am! Not, of course, the fault of the hotel but should we return we would ask for a room that doesn't overlook the road. We had dinner in the restaurant. My husband chose the liver and bacon and I had the Fillet and Feather of beef, which should have come with grilled asparagus. It didn’t. Kale had been substituted – a vegetable I absolutely loathe – with no warning or consultation.. It is frankly annoying when a substitution is made without consulting the diner. The matter was easily and pleasantly dealt with but should not have happened and it was ironic that when we were presented with a dish of mixed vegetables (the buttered cabbage we’d ordered never arrived ) there was grilled asparagus on it. Why it wasn’t on my plate in the first place is a mystery. Both dishes were delicious but only lukewarm but in view of the kale complaint we decided not to pursue that. Both desserts were delicious. Breakfast was rather average but to be fair we didn’t choose any of the items on the Cooked Specially to Order’ section of the menu. The coffee was the weakest we have ever had – could do better there, I’m afraid. Setting these ******* aside we would happily go back as the hotel was very comfortable and the staff very pleasant and helpful. And, as I say, it’s in an excellent location for visiting this lovely little city. One point worth mentioning is that some rooms in the Coach House are only accessible by stairs, and quite a few of them, so they are not really suitable for the less mobile or nimble.
Response from Property: Moville047 Thank you for your detailed review of your recent stay here at the Swan Hotel Wells. I am sorry that some aspects of your stay fell below your expectations and I will certainly look into your comments regarding Room 62 as I wasn't aware of the issue with the light on the mirror and pass your comments regarding the food to our head chef for review. Once again please except my apologises and should you decide to revisit please contact myself direct at the hotel (General Manager) so I am able to personally ensure your next stay is a smooth one.

Beautiful hotel but room we stayed in (standard double) needed some TLC and attention to detail, torn curtain pelmet, damaged walls, ripped bin, timescale to kettle. Wonderful location and beautiful old historic hotel. Breakfast was perfect and staff friendly and helpful.

Half a century after leaving the town in which I grew up it was great to finally stay in the hotel that I knew from an early age. Lovely staff and the food, particularly a celebratory dinner, was very good.
