When it rains, it drops to around 18°C, and it's even cooler in the mountains. · October: Mostly 15–22°C. It gets cold in the mornings and evenings around Fanjingshan, Leigongshan, and Zhijindong Cave, so bring a jacket for when the wind picks up. · Key takeaway: The saying "it doesn't stay sunny for three days" isn't a joke. The East Gate cable car is the main route. If it's your first time, don't try to force a complex loop yourself. · Driving tips: Guizhou is very mountainous. GPS sometimes loses signal in the mountains. When I travel to Libo, my approach is pretty simple: save where I can, but spend when it genuinely makes the experience better. I’m more willing to spend on a comfortable place to stay and getting around, especially because some of the natural attractions are spread out. After walking around for hours, I really appreciate having somewhere comfortable to rest instead of choosing the cheapest option just to save a little money. For food, I’m much more relaxed about saving. I don’t need an expensive restaurant every day. I’d rather find a small local place, order something simple, and try the food that people actually eat there. Sometimes a basic meal feels more satisfying after a long day outdoors anyway. My travel money philosophy is pay for comfort and experiences, not appearances. I don’t mind spending more when it saves me a lot of stress or gives me a memory I’ll actually keep. But I don’t think spending more automatically makes a trip better. One thing that helps me stretch my budget is planning the main expenses before I arrive. Once I know roughly what I’ll spend on accommodation, transport and entrance fees, I can be more flexible with everything else. For me, travelling on a budget doesn’t mean saying no to everything. From the scenic area exit, turn left to go straight to the hotel, so you can pick up your luggage on the way out. 2️⃣Tickets: You can grab tickets 1 week, 3 days, or at 6:00 AM on the day of your visit. It’s best to get tickets for 7:00 AM or earlier, as there are very few people inside then! If you don’t get tickets in advance, don’t worry. You can still buy tickets on-site before 7:00 AM. If you have a 7:20 ticket but arrive by 7:00, staff will manually let you in (so I guess if you have an afternoon ticket and arrive by 7:00, they might also let you in, but that’s just a guess—I had a 7:20 ticket). 3️⃣Route: · Going up the mountain: Take the sightseeing bus right after entering, then the cable car (buying in advance on Ctrip saves time, but you can also buy on-site). After getting off the cable car, don’t take the forest walkway! The route down from the cable car is the easiest (route by already referenced). That blogger explains it thoroughly! Don’t take the wrong path or you’ll end up going down the mountain! · Hongyun Golden Summit (2,336 m): Arrive at Pudu Square before 8:30 AM to avoid booking the Hongyun Golden Summit! I arrived at 8:20 and almost needed a reservation. If you need to book, do it right after getting off the cable car; otherwise, you’ll wait a long time (if you arrive late, climb the Old Golden Summit first to avoid missing your slot, as missing it voids the ticket). The climb has about 20 meters that are steep and require using both hands and feet. The staff are fun and will cheer “Oli gei~” with a megaphone, making the climb lively. · Old Golden Summit (2,494 m) and Mushroom Rock (2,318 m): After returning to Pudu Square (around 9:40), rest briefly and then climb the Old Golden Summit. With average fitness, I reached the top around 10:40. The view back to Hongyun Golden Summit is beautiful. On the way down from the Old Golden Summit, follow the signs to Mushroom Rock (arrive around 11:20). The deep blue sky is stunning. · Going down the mountain: Return to Pudu Square around 11:40 and head toward the cable car station for descent. On the way, you’ll pass a place where you can get a free “Fu” (fortune) stamp. It’s meaningful to get this stamp, and you can ask staff to stamp two seals for you (one for Fanjing Mountain and one for your zodiac sign, like on P16; laminated copies cost 19 RMB). Then take the cable car (you can also walk on the right side, but most people go left and it’s slower) and the sightseeing bus (get off the cable car at 12:10). Don’t worry about the wind on the sightseeing bus—sit by the window! The water at Fanjing Mountain is incredibly beautiful, definitely better than the peak season at Xiaoqikong! If you miss it, there’s a place called Heiwang Gorge along the exit where you can take photos (see P17–18). Then return to the hotel to pick up your luggage and head back (around 12:40). 4️⃣Other: I personally don’t think gloves are necessary (unless you mind touching chains), and hiking poles aren’t needed unless you’re older or for very steep sections. Any matcha shop near the exit sells local European-standard matcha from Fanjing Mountain (69 RMB per box). I went to the shop closest to the exit on the right side; if you’re nice to the staff, you can use tour guide points for a 2% discount. The drinks at Moshangji are also delicious~
