The front desk service attitude is good, the facilities are complete, the room area is relatively large, the location is convenient and safe, close to the subway station, not far from the train station, the sanitary conditions are good, and the breakfast environment is good,

It reached my expectations in addition to great cost-benefit. Delicious morning coffee. Friendly and helpful employees. I will return at the next opportunity.

We had horrible experience at this hotel. The room was small and you can hear everything happening in neighboring rooms. The safe and the fan and air conditioner did not work and the staff were not helpful when we called to ask about this. The towels were old and the breakfast was not good. The staff overall was not friendly.

"Would I stay in Black Tulip again?" Answer: "Yes". Detailed comments: We stayed 5 nights on the Gaia side of Porto. It's about a 20 - 30 minutes walk to downtown Porto. It suited us as we normally walk many miles daily. There is a tram across the street but we never used it. Hotel is very clean throughout. Our room was a good size with a decent ensuite and full size bath. Fixtures and fittings sturdy and everything worked; safe in room. Daily maid service excellent. Beds a bit hard for our liking. Dining-room is on 10th floor with brilliant views and nicely set up: white table clothes etc. Friendly attentive staff. Usual buffet type breakfast with good selection. Main downside (and as other reviewers have also mentioned) there are only 2 tiny lifts (hold max of 4 people, or 2 with suitcases). Our room was on the 1st floor and it took forever to wait for an empty lift to the 10th floor for breakfast. There are no stairs... only the fire-escape stairs which we used (we checked and were given permission) when going out/returning to the hotel as it was only 1 flight. But the stairwell is very dimly lit and everything is painted grey: walls, ceiling, concrete steps etc, so it was hard to see the actual steps - needed extra care not to miss a step and fall. I'd be worried what it would be like if there was a real emergency evacuation using the emergency stairs. But yes, overall I would stay here again.

There are only 2 small elevators for 10 stores hotel. They are always busy. The breakfast is very poor. No fresh vegetables, not enough coffee cups. We tried to use safe. It closed and did not open. The refrigerator was not working on the day of our arrival, though it was fixed next day.

Pretty good hotel, but but not 4* definitely. Well located, good hot breakfasts, amazing view from the restaurant on 10th floor. Rooms are OK, but with minimum equipment and old furniture. Good for the price, sough..

I recently stayed in Hotel Black Tulip. On the first morning I noticed that there weren't electrical points for using a shaver available in the bathroom . I reported this to the young man on reception-thinking this will take some time to fix/put right. Within minutes a repair man was knocking on the door. He set about replacing the unit on the wall and enabled the use of the electrical points. I was very impressed. Staff on reception were very helplful.

We stayed at the hotel for two nights. The staff at the reception were efficient, so check-in was fast. The room was large and cleaning standards were okay. Breakfast is good and fresh, but the restaurant is small, and I wonder what would happen, if the hotel had been fully booked… The hotel has no fitness centre, swimming pool or other extra services, so maybe the rating should have been less than 4 stars, but the cleaning standard and size of the room make me stay with a 4-star rating.

This hotel is away from the centre of Porto but the tram stop is only a minute away. I asked for a quiet room, I had one at the back and it was ideal. The bar is off the Reception area. is very small and lacks atmosphere. The restaurant on the top floor has lovely views, I only ate dinner there once and it was OK. Staff were very helpful at all times. The variety available at breakfast varied from day to day, it was probably what one would expect in a 3* Hotel.

Nice room friendly staff, ok restaurant/breakfast but remote location. Really not worth the money. We do not understand how this hotel was rated four stars. Extremely small elevators and the restaurant located on the top floor felt a bit unsafe in case of a fire. The stairwell was also very small.

What a very helpful and kind person working the front desk at the Black Tulip. Although I was not staying at the hotel, she assisted me with a problem I had with a missing drivers license. I think this shows the quality of the staff of The Black Tulip. I only wish I had gotten the name of this kind women at the desk. I should also mention that her English was excellent.

We were stranded by a canceled booking elsewhere, and, being the height of summer, the Porto area was already overbooked. We entered the hotel exhausted, disheartened, and a little desperate. The staff listened to our tale of woe and then wasted no time in doing all they could to salvage our trip. While they were almost fully booked, they found us a very nice room and squeezed us all in there quite comfortably. They gave us extra towels, and spent time explaining the area, and where we might get some dinner at that late hour. The next morning, the manager was enormously helpful and accommodating, and all the staff proved supportive and kind during the rest of the stay. I would have taken one star away for the slightly shabby carpeting and tiny elevators, as well as the "good but not great" breakfast. However, the staff were outstanding in their customer service commitment, and more than made up for any minor deficits barely worth mentioning. We were more than fortunate to come across Hotel Black Tulip, and will always appreciate their kindness and hospitality. Extra note: The main tram into Porto is mere steps fromm the front door, comfortable, and efficient. You buy a card at the station, and then top it up during your travels.

Stayed here on a group trip. It's obviously cheap for a clean and neat hotel. The rooms are fairly modern (make sure you're not facing the tram line - which is very convenient for reaching the centre of Porto, but noisy). The hotel is walking distance to El Corte Ingles but nowhere else particularly interesting as it's outside the centre. My room (on the top floor) had giant silverfish which scuttled around when the lights were turned on, so there must be some damp somewhere. The only real criticism was the food. The breakfast is dreadful, with a very poor buffet. The rest of the group ate in the restaurant and found the food of a low standard. In summary: cheap and cheerful, but no frills.
