The Porches at Mass MoCA was just what we were looking for in an early fall getaway. It's a series of rehabbed homes of employees of the factories that used to be in the town, and the owners have done a thorough and successful job. Things to be aware of (which are not necessarily bad, just information to consider): -The Porches is on a street that is fairly busy during the day, so you hear traffic noise pretty regularly. It quiets down a lot at night though. So this is not a place that's out in the woods in an isolated spot. -North Adams is a town recovering from the closure of the mills that were its source of employment. As such, there's not a whole lot going on in the town. The attractions now are hiking and biking and Mass MoCA, which is one of the most intriguing and fun museums I've ever visited. -Despite that, you can get some first rate food in the town, which is a 5-10 minute walk from the inn. There are also excellent choices in Williamstown, which is about a 10 minute drive away. Now, The Porches! It's like visiting your friends who have a house in the country. Not elegant, not fancy, but homey and comfortable. The manager on duty when we arrived upgraded us to a suite, which we very much appreciated as it had a sitting room with a kitchen. We brought leftovers home after most of our meals out so having a fridge, microwave, plates, and utensils was very useful. I appreciated the good lighting in the bedroom. The bed was too soft for us but it always is. There was always plenty of hot water in the bathroom, which was a little short on storage space, but we made it work. As the name of the place might suggest, rooms have decks outside with rocking chairs and we enjoyed those every day. There's a well equipped fitness room. The pool and hot tub are nearby, and although I didn't swim, it was lovely to sit in the sun and dangle my feet in the water. Breakfast featured lox every day along with eggs or potatoes or both. The bread was locally made and especially good. I would have liked the hot water for tea to be hotter than it was, but I know some places worry about liabilty when people carry hot drinks. Sitting outside watching the colors begin to come out on the trees on the nearby mountains was nourishing for our souls, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier or more welcoming. It was just what we needed. Thanks to all at The Porches!
