Once the architectural muse for the Empire State Building, the historic R.J. Reynolds building is now home to The Kimpton Cardinal Hotel. We’ve enjoyed mixing Southern manners and modern flair, with a little mischief thrown in. Step through our magnificent Art Deco entryway into a lavish social living room or meet us on the patio for steamed oysters. Step outside to explore downtown Winston-Salem and her thriving art, music and foodie scene.

I booked this hotel because I'm a sucker for older buildings with Art Deco architecture. When I walked into the lobby, i was pleased...it appeared to have delivered in that department. The gold elevators, the floors, the fixtures were all exactly what I was looking for. Sadly, once we got up to our room, the charm of the hotel ended with a thud. The room was dark. We fumbled for the light switch, and a single low-watt lightbulb flickered on by the bed. The rest of the stay, I tried to get some kind of illumination (other than the flashlight on my phone) but was thwarted at every attempt. The floor lamp's bulb was burnt out. Other switches did nothing. The curtains were impossible to budge or even reach. It felt like we were in a cave...a cave with dated carpeting and beat up furniture. It's sad, because this building could be such an amazing hotel if they put a little love and design into the rooms. We ate at the restaurant downstairs for dinner and it was pretty good. Over all, however, I say thumbs down. Kimpton, I thought you guys would do better than this!

The staff has exceptional customer service from the front desk to hospitality! The wine and cheese from 5 - 7 were great to ”wind down” for the day and the cookies and milk from 8 - 9 were so tasty for an evening treat or bedtime snack. My room was LARGE with two levels - queen size bed, a large sofa, a side chair, and a faux fireplace with a space heater to imitate the real deal. The space heater did heat up the room because it was quite chilly. The only complaint I have is that my microwave did not work and it was pretty cold in the rooms but the staff was more than willing to accommodate my needs. The floors creek a lot when people are walking or just settling for the evening. Those little inconveniences will be there with the age of this building but it also speaks to its history...thus the story of Sally the Ghost. I was not afraid of that after reading about her story on my first night there.

Although it is a 20-minute drive from the high-point exhibition, this hotel is very cost-effective, parking is convenient, there are many restaurants around, and it is quiet. I recommend this hotel for business trips. And the front desk has a contact form for takeaway, very intimate!

The staff members here were helpful and professional. We did find trash that wasn't ours under an end table. Other than that, the room seemed to be in good shape. The pool wasn't open, but it is located outside in front of the building. Waffles and other breakfast items were available, but all the tables had been removed from the breakfast area. Sad as there was a nice wooded overlook to enjoy.

Very Good
GGuest UserI just stayed 3 nights at Indigo for work. It was my first stay since early 2020. My employee also stayed there, and had a similar experience. Pros (and the only reasons I’m giving a 3 rating): The restaurant was the best meal I’ve had in years (though a little pricey). Also, the restaurant/bar/front desk staff were all really nice. Cons: The thermostat in my room did not work, and no attempt to fix it was made, which means it will remain an issue for future guests. The plus was that there is a master control downstairs so they can set it for you, but they have to do that anytime you want it changed. Also, the system was apparently set to change my AC of 68 to HEAT set at 75 midday, so every day after work the room was blazing hot and I had to call the front desk to change. One time they couldn’t figure it out so I literally helped the front desk figure out how to use the system. Another con is that the rooms are filthy. I’m no clean freak, but every surface needed a deep cleaning. If you want to see for yourself just look on top of the wardrobe which is short enough to put things on ( don’t). They also didn’t clean daily. Nothing was tidied up, nothing wiped down, no towels were replaced. They literally just made the bed. My employee said the same for her room. I don’t see myself staying here ever again, which I hate because the decor and staff were great.
GGuest UserThis is the place to stay in Winston Salem. My nephew who was only a day old was transferred to the NICU at at local hospital. As you can imagine my brother had a lot going on. I called the hotel and Tanya went ABOVE AND BEYOND to accommodate and help to make this horrible situation a little easier. She kept in contact with me during my brothers stay, extended his stay and the hotel even got the baby a gift that was waiting for them at check out. Everyone should take a lesson from this employee. The kindness she showed was so appreciated. There are not enough words to describe how much it meant. Thank you Tanya! She deserves a raise!
GGuest UserIn town for 1 night to visitan ill parent. Booked this location last minute online. We had a pet so we paid an additional $15 fee for the dog. Mattress was adequate for one nights sleep. But the room needed some housekeeping attention. The bath towels were full of hair...not ours. The vanity light and ceiling were disgustingly stained. Hotel was in no way accommodating to the comcerns. I was offered my $15 pet fee back. WHAT...my pet was not the problem. The probpem is the lack of sanitation, attention and customer service at this location. The lady who checked us out said she was going to check the towels. THEY SHOULDVE BEEN CHECKED BEFORE YOU GAVE US THE ROOM...NOT WHEN WE ARE LEAVING. Although they are independently owned I will be contacting Choice and sharing the photos.
GGuest UserChose the location due to proximity to family we were visiting. Location is great -- close to highways, mall, and lots of restaurants. Once inside, though, we were surprised at the age of the hotel and its need for updates and repairs. The elevator was small and finicky; it liked to alarm for no reason when getting in. The hallways were hot and needed vacuuming. Our room was very spacious, with the door to the hall and bathroom placed at an angle to increase accessibility. The carpet in the room was stained, there was a hole punched in the wall, mildew on the shower curtain, a pink mystery stain on the ceiling in the shower, dead insects in the ceiling light in the bathroom, no extra toilet paper (we quickly ran out), and no tissues in the built-in tissue holder on the sink. Relatives of ours in another room said their soap holder shelf in their shower was ripped out and there was a hole in its place--no covering/tape/anything. We were informed that there would be no maid service during our stay (if staying less than 7 days) due to lack of staff, so if we needed anything, you had to go to the front desk for it. Breakfast was available; the only hot items were waffles or instant grits (hot water was available). Overall, the property seemed in need of a deep clean at a minimum, or at best, an update. The price is reasonable, but I would rather pay a bit more for a better-kept property with daily maid service available.
GGuest UserWe've stayed at the this Hotel several times now, and the hotel and staff will never disappoint! The facilities are second to none, always spotless and of the highest quality. The Hotel staff are the most attentive, friendly, and helpful we have ever encountered.
GGuest UserThe staff is very helpful and takes great care of me! Everyone has gone above and beyond to help. I have access to laundry, dishes, full size fridge, microwave and a stovetop. This location is close to the mall and plenty of restaurants.
DDaisy SosaThe location is great. With gas station right next door and dollar general around the corner. Access to the highway as well as main rd. The housekeepers are great and friendly. Always willing to help.. the breakfast could be better but at least thier is breakfast
GGuest UserSleep inn is the best and most comfortable hotel chain in the United States, at a reasonable price. The bed and the bed were very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was very rich and the passengers were of high quality and clean.
GGuest UserThis is a wonderful place to say besides some minor glitches. It’s now going on 24 hrs since we turned in our towels and have yet to receive fresh ones. When asked about receiving them the young lady responded with “we are out”. So we shall wait and see if we receive any today. Other then this one incident we have never had issues here before. My family and I strongly recommend staying here.!
