You guys won't believe it! I caught the first glimpse of autumn's ginkgo leaves in Guangdong at Maozifeng — traveler post in Shaoguan

You guys won't believe it! I caught the first glimpse of autumn's ginkgo leaves in Guangdong at Maozifeng

I've been looking forward to this for so long! Finally, I took a weekend road trip with friends to Maozifeng in Nanxiong to find the first touch of autumn in Guangdong. Escaping the stifling hustle and bustle of the city, we drove into the mountains. The lush greenery along the way really lifted my spirits—it's perfect for a short family getaway🍂 📸Must-visit spots ▪Linjia Puzi: New art installations have been added to the forest. The contrast between the old houses and the new designs is really tasteful—every photo is full of atmosphere. ▪Daxiao Fangping: A dense, low-lying ginkgo forest. It's the first area in the park to turn yellow, and since it's not too crowded, it's perfect for a leisurely stroll. ▪Hexagonal Pavilion & Golden Avenue: The most popular photo spot in the scenic area. The tall ginkgo trees intertwine to form a golden tunnel, preserving the vibe of the old forest farm. There are restaurants nearby, too. 🏨Stay | Xinglin Shanju Staying at Xinglin Shanju was a wonderful surprise. The environment is elegant and tranquil, surrounded by mountains and forests—a natural oxygen bar. You can breathe in the fresh air right from your room. Waking up to the sound of birds in the forest helped me shed all my fatigue. 🍴Dining The restaurant in the scenic area uses fresh ingredients and offers authentic flavors. I got to try some very unique local dishes. We took our time exploring the entire scenic area without rushing. We chatted and laughed with family, stopping whenever we wanted, and captured so many atmospheric photos. It left us with unforgettable autumn memories. A road trip from Guangzhou/Foshan for an autumn getaway is definitely worth it! 📍: Shaoguan Maozifeng Scenic Area

Top pick: Guangdong Danxia Mountain's red cliffs and the clear waters of Jinjiang River — traveler post in Shaoguan

Top pick: Guangdong Danxia Mountain's red cliffs and the clear waters of Jinjiang River

🌄 [Core scenery] Located in Shaoguan, Guangdong, Danxia Mountain is the namesake of the "Danxia landform" and is a World Natural Heritage site and World Geopark. The entire mountain range is composed of red sandstone, with over 680 red stone peaks featuring flat tops, steep sides, and gentle foothills standing in a continuous line. The red cliffs resemble sunset clouds, and the peaks compete in beauty. The most famous Yangyuan Stone stands 28 meters tall, facing the main scenic area across the Jinjiang River. Zhanglao Peak is composed of three levels of red cliffs, making it a great place to appreciate the layers of Danxia. The red rock walls are particularly striking against the blue sky and green trees. In the early morning and evening, when the light is low, the cliffs glow red like burning sunset clouds. 📷 [Shoot from three distances] For close-ups, capture the textures of the red rock walls, weathered holes, and plants on the cliff face. For mid-range shots, include the relationship between the unique peaks, boardwalks, and trees. For long-range shots, overlook the scenery from Zhanglao Peak or an observation deck to capture both the red mountains and clear waters in one frame. The Jinjiang River boat tour is also a classic experience. The 10 km waterway is lined with continuous red cliffs, offering a different perspective of Danxia from the water. When on the boat, be mindful of the movement, hold steady before pressing the shutter, and the river reflections paired with the red rocks make for great photos. 🎒 [Travel light and take your time] The scenic area is vast, so it is recommended to plan ahead: hike Zhanglao Peak in the morning to see the red cliffs, and explore the Jinjiang River or Yangyuan Stone area in the afternoon. Wear non-slip shoes and bring water and sun protection. There are many stairs on the mountain paths, so watch your step. Cable car, boat, and shuttle bus schedules are subject to official announcements. Start early during peak season to avoid crowds. Do not climb on restricted rock faces, take your trash with you, and help protect the geological heritage. Danxia Mountain has dense vegetation, so be sure to take precautions against mosquitoes and stay hydrated in the summer.

8 travel destinations worth visiting in November–December — traveler post in Shaoguan

8 travel destinations worth visiting in November–December

The end of the year is approaching, and many people are starting to plan their trips. I've compiled a list of 8 places with different vibes, ranging from the distinct landscapes of the north and south. Whether you're looking for a warm southern getaway or snowy northern scenery, you can choose what suits you best. 📍 Xishuangbanna The temperature is quite comfortable in November–December, and the rainforest vegetation remains lush year-round. The golden pagoda of Manting Ancient Temple stands quietly, and the Starlight Night Market glows with lights in the evening. You can put on Dai-style clothing, stroll along the streets, and try chicken feet and pineapple rice to experience the local Dai culture. ✅ Travel & off-peak tips: It gets crowded during holidays, so try to visit off-peak. There is a temperature difference between day and night, so bring a light jacket. 📍 Changbai Mountain In early winter, the mountains and forests are covered in snow, and you can see Heaven Lake when the weather is right. The mountains are often misty, and after exploring, you can experience the volcanic hot springs and enjoy the winter forest scenery. ✅ Travel & off-peak tips: Temperatures on the mountain are low, so be prepared with a thick down jacket and non-slip shoes. There are fewer crowds on weekdays, so try to start your day early. 📍 Xingyi In winter, Wanfenglin (Forest of Ten Thousand Peaks) has many sunny days. The rolling peaks are scattered about, creating a peaceful pastoral atmosphere. You can walk along the country roads in Xiaonahui Village, watch the smoke rising from village chimneys, try a bowl of chicken meat tangyuan (glutinous rice balls), and enjoy the leisurely rural life. ✅ Travel & off-peak tips: Temperatures are lower in the morning and evening, so remember to dress warmly. The viewing platforms get crowded on weekends, so prioritize weekday travel. 📍 Nanxiong From late November to December, the ginkgo trees in Maotifeng and Pingtian Ancient Village slowly turn yellow. Sunlight filters through the branches, and the old houses in the ancient village paired with yellow leaves make for a perfect spot for walking and photography. ✅ Travel & off-peak tips: The ginkgo viewing season is short, so check the status of the leaves before you leave. Visiting on weekdays means shorter wait times for photos. 📍 Jingxi The small city has a mild climate in winter, and the karst landscape is refreshing. The water at Goose Spring is crystal clear, the old town of Jiuzhou is full of local life, and the mountains and water at Quyang Lake are connected. While strolling through the streets and alleys, you can try local suanye (pickled fruit/vegetables) to experience the local flavors. ✅ Travel & off-peak tips: There are many curves in the mountainous areas, so drive slowly if you are renting a car. The old town gets crowded on weekends, so we recommend visiting off-peak. 📍 Harbin As the ice and snow season arrives, snowflakes fall on the top of Saint Sophia Cathedral. You can buy red sausage on Central Street, and once the river freezes, you can enjoy activities on the Songhua River. While walking on the street, you can also try a Madieer popsicle to experience the local winter specialty. ✅ Travel & off-peak tips: Temperatures are low, so be sure to pack complete cold-weather gear. Central Street is crowded in the evening; if you want a quieter experience, choose the morning. 📍 Yancheng Autumn and winter are the seasons for migratory bird arrivals. The reeds in the wetlands sway in the wind, and red-crowned cranes and milu deer stop here. Walking slowly along the wetland boardwalks, you can see birds skimming across the water and enjoy the vast wilderness scenery. ✅ Travel & off-peak tips: It is windy in the wetlands, so be prepared to block the wind and stay warm. Birds are relatively more active in the early morning, making it a great time for birdwatching. 📍 Jianshui The ancient city in southern Yunnan has plenty of sunshine in winter, and the Chaoyang Tower and Shuanglong Bridge retain their ancient architectural style. The old city streets are full of life, and you can eat grilled tofu from roadside stalls or enjoy a warm bowl of caoya rice noodles. There is no need to plan a packed itinerary; just take your time and stroll around. ✅ Travel & off-peak tips: There are fewer tourists in the ancient city in the morning, which is perfect for a quiet visit. There is a significant temperature difference between day and night, so bring a jacket when you go out. 💬 End-of-post interaction For your year-end trip, would you choose the warm south or the snowy scenery of the north?

23°C Luokeng: The ultimate family getaway! Stay in Guangdong's most beautiful valley and soak in pools right outside your door — traveler post in Shaoguan

23°C Luokeng: The ultimate family getaway! Stay in Guangdong's most beautiful valley and soak in pools right outside your door

When traveling with kids in summer, you just want somewhere with clear water, cool temperatures, and few crowds. Luokeng in Qujiang, Shaoguan, Guangdong, is a cool hidden gem tucked away in the mountains of northern Guangdong. The average summer temperature is around 23°C. A mountain breeze blows away all the summer heat, and you're surrounded by lush green valleys and emerald creek pools so clear you can see the bottom. The air is filled with the fresh scent of plants and damp rocks. The best part is that there really is a Houzhai Eco-Homestay right next to the valley. The entire valley is connected by natural pools of all sizes. You can reach the first pool just a few minutes' walk from where you park. No need to trek over mountains; just step out the door and you can dip your feet into the cool creek water. Adults can finally slow down their pace in the valley and forest. 📍 [2-day, 1-night relaxed, cool getaway] Day 1: Arrive at Shaoguan Station by high-speed train, then rent a car directly to Houzhai Eco-Homestay in Luokeng, Qujiang (about a 1.5-hour drive). In the afternoon, splash around in the creek pools next to the homestay. In the evening, take a walk along the creek path and watch the sunset dye the emerald pools a warm gold. For dinner, enjoy authentic mountain snails and free-range chicken at the homestay's farm restaurant, where ingredients are freshly picked from the mountains and raised by local farmers. Day 2: In the morning, walk a bit upstream to find a shallow pool where you can let the kids splash around and flip over stones to look for small shrimp. In the afternoon, head back to the deep pool near the homestay to soak your feet and relax, or take a walk at the Luokeng Grassland before heading home at a leisurely pace. 🏨 [Creekside homestay by Guangdong's most beautiful valley] We stayed at Houzhai Eco-Homestay, which is right next to the Luokeng Houzhai Valley, known as "Guangdong's most beautiful valley." Open the door to see mountains, open the window to see water. At night, all you hear is the babbling creek and chirping insects. The best part is that the entire valley is connected by natural pools of all sizes. The creek water is crystal clear, shimmering with a gentle emerald glow when the sunlight hits it. There are pools of varying depths—some shallow enough to just cover your ankles, others deep enough to watch fish swim. The rooms are clean and airy, with soft, comfortable bedding and complete toiletries. You can enjoy the forest scenery right from your room. The homestay's on-site farm restaurant serves authentic mountain snails and mountain tofu, so you don't have to worry about finding food elsewhere. 🎯 [Three highlights tested with kids] 💦 Splashing time by the emerald pools: The creek pools next to the homestay are so clear you can see every grain of sand and stone at the bottom. The shallow areas are just deep enough to cover a child's lower legs. My child rolled up their pant legs and stepped into the cool creek water, bending down to flip over stones looking for small shrimp. They giggled whenever splashed, and refused to leave all afternoon. The banks are shaded by trees, so adults can pull up a chair, sit on the rocks by the pool, and soak their feet. The joy of having an entire valley to yourself just by stepping out the door is so much more comfortable than visiting crowded tourist spots. 🪨 Treasure hunting in the shallow pools deep in the valley: Walk a bit further upstream, and you'll find alternating pools and shallows, each with its own unique scenery. My child squatted by the shallow water, picking up colorful little stones smoothed by the creek, comparing whose were rounder or more patterned. They didn't want to leave even after filling a small bucket. Occasionally, a dragonfly would skim across the water, and they would hold their breath and stare, afraid of scaring it away. 🌿 Slow time in the shade by the creek: There's plenty of shade by the creek next to the homestay. During the hottest part of the afternoon, adults can sit on the rocks in the shade drinking tea, while the kids splash around and throw pebbles in the shallow water nearby. No rushing, no queuing, just listening to the sound of the creek and the cicadas, each enjoying themselves. This undisturbed, relaxed mountain vibe is more precious than any itinerary. 💡 [A few practical tips] The rocks in the valley are slippery, so non-slip water shoes are a must. Bring extra changes of clothes as you'll likely get wet. Bring plenty of mosquito repellent, as there are quite a few bugs by the creek and in the forest. It only takes a few minutes to walk from the parking area to the first pool, so no need to trek over mountains—it's easy for both seniors and children to enjoy the water. You can eat at the homestay's farm restaurant; the mountain snails and mountain tofu are worth a try. The number of rooms is limited, so remember to book in advance during peak season. After this two-day, one-night trip, the whole family was immersed in the coolness of the valley and the greenery of the forest. The kids were completely worn out, and the adults were able to fully recharge. It's truly rare to have such a comfortable and relaxing family time during the summer vacation.

Danxiashan UNESCO Global Geopark

The namesake of Danxia landforms, a World Natural Heritage site, boasts stunning red rock peaks and forests perfect for photos. Sunrise and sunset are the highlights, with the sunset at Ximeizhai and sunrise at Elder Peak offering breathtaking atmosphere. However, the area has many steps and significant elevation changes, making it a challenging hiking destination.

Yunmen Mountain

The scenery at the mountaintop was beautiful. Since we had stayed at a mountain resort before, our package ticket allowed us to enter the park twice, so we were able to experience all the attractions. The glass bridge and waterfall are among the best in the province – thumbs up! The roller coaster ride was an excellent experience. We'll definitely come back sometime.

Xianmen Qixia Scenic Area

This was our first time visiting this scenic area. The bamboo rafting experience in the canyon wasn't great; there weren't many eye-catching spots along the way, but the Fairy Gate was quite nice.

Maozifeng Tourist Scenic Area

There aren't many people early in the morning, and it's foggy. It gets busier once the fog clears. It's a great choice for families to visit, relax, or camp. You can drive or take public transport; there are many options. It's a seasonal attraction, so choose your time carefully.

Meiguan Ancient Post Road

Looking for a less-traveled destination with historical significance and hiking opportunities this weekend? The Meiguan Ancient Road in Dayu, Jiangxi is highly recommended! This ancient post road has been around for a thousand years, and after completing the hike, you can enjoy panoramic views of the county town from the mountaintop.

Zhuji Ancient Lane

With relatively low foot traffic, newly built internal alleyways, and significant business loss, the interior environment is quite quiet and refreshing when there are few people; it can be considered a park with a lake. A complete walk around it takes less than an hour.

Nanhua Temple

The Sixth Patriarch Huineng's footprints involved three temples in total. I have been to Xinxing Guo'en Temple and Guangzhou Guangxiao Temple before. I have always wanted to visit Nanhua Temple. This time I finally got my wish. Before I came, I knew that the Sixth Patriarch's body was enshrined here. It is an important temple of the Southern Zen Sect. Nanhua Temple is one of the famous Buddhist temples in China.

The only downside is that the two mountains are too far apart. After climbing Elder Peak, I simply didn't have the energy to climb the other one. If they were connected, I would have had the motivation, but having to descend one mountain and then walk the other to climb the other one made it impossible to move.

Guangdong Grand Canyon

Unexpectedly, such a fairyland is hidden deep in the mountains of Shaoguan, Guangdong. Various waterfalls gently cascade into emerald pools, creating a picturesque scene in the rain; the most special is the Tenglong Waterfall, over 200 meters high, which plunges down from the sky, a truly magnificent sight! If the facilities were a bit better, it would definitely be a popular tourist attraction…
