A comfortable stay in Sounkyo. Their buffet dinner and breakfast were great. Lots of variety.. particularly like their draft beer where you can fill by yourself for the buffet dinner. Onsen is available till morning 9am. Staff were friendly and room is clean. Nice environment with nature surrounding the hotel. There's a shop inside the hotel to buy Sounkyo souvenir.

From the moment the shuttle picked us up from the Tabist Hotel in Asahikawa to our check-in, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We accidentally left our thermos on the shuttle, and they quickly retrieved it for us. The onsen (hot spring bath) itself had a distinct sulfur smell, which I absolutely loved! The bingo game at 8 PM (500 yen per card) really got the atmosphere going. The only downside was dinner; when we arrived around 6:45 PM, almost all the food was gone. A large tour group arrived shortly after, and even then, the food wasn't replenished. They just brought out fried chicken wings and fried fish, and even drinks weren't restocked in time. We ended up just eating ice cream, which made us feel colder and colder. It felt like they were afraid of people actually eating, which I really disliked. I would have been more impressed with a kaiseki meal in that situation.
However, what I really need to complain about is the 'Sounkyo Ice Waterfall Festival.' It's unacceptable that just because we arrived on the last day, there was absolutely nothing left. All the attractions were gone, leaving only sponsor flags. How many fireworks were there? If the organizers charge an entry fee, shouldn't there be corresponding insurance? There wasn't any. I know that ice sculptures can be slippery, but simply throwing down a few plastic anti-slip mats isn't a proper solution. I had to keep reminding my elderly companions, 'Watch your step!' Unfortunately, one of our elders still fell. When we asked the event staff for assistance, we were told that since we were independent travelers, only our own insurance would cover it. The most they could do was have our hotel staff call an ambulance. Is that right? The rest of our trip was completely ruined because of this... completely ruined.

The hotel was clean and tidy, but getting around was a bit inconvenient. I'd recommend driving if you're staying here. The breakfast and dinner were also quite good.

The environment is fantastic. As soon as you walk into the lobby, you're hit with the smell of sulfur, which confirms it's a real hot spring. They even offered complimentary buffet breakfast and dinner for the kids, which was unexpectedly plentiful. The hot springs are great for soaking, and the Ice Waterfall Festival nearby was also a beautiful sight.

Good hotel with nice big clean rooms. Dinner and breakfast had a good selection which we found to be good. All staff were great and tried to assist when required. The onsen was great and clean. We enjoyed 2 nights at Choyo Resort Hotel.

The hotel is a bit old, but it seems all the hotels in this area have a lot of history. The room we booked was quite spacious, and the living room even had a massage machine, which was great for unwinding after a long day. The buffet was also delicious.

I booked with the knowledge that the resort is a bit dated. However, the facilities are adequate and public onsen for men/women were natural and refreshing. I wish the hotel would have special menu for the day so for guests like us who stayed 3 nights would not be terribly sick of repeating menu. Our meal plan include dinner with alcohol and breakfast. Highlight was room view was facing autumn foliage and stream. The smoking lounge that has no door, right near to restaurant - just make the whole place smell of cigarette smoking. Having said that, I would recommend for people who want to explore Sounkyo:Daisetsuzan national park.

The hotel is a few minutes' drive from Sounkyo, and the hot springs are great. However, the hotel primarily caters to tour groups. I found leftover shrimp shells from the previous night on several buffet plates, and many of the cups had water stains, making it feel like they weren't properly cleaned between guests. The food was also unappetizing. Housekeeping staff would casually leave all the bedding and towels on the corridor floor for every room. In a four-person room with futons, we even found small bugs on them. There were also ice claws and heat packs left by previous guests in the drawers, which clearly showed that the hotel's cleaning wasn't thorough. The customer service attitude was also poor. Upon check-in, I confirmed with the front desk that futon service was available for a two-person Japanese/Western-style room. Yet, when we returned at the designated time, no futons were laid out. After multiple calls and visits to the front desk, they only said they would arrange it immediately. Eventually, a male staff member knocked on our door and reluctantly stated that two people should sleep on the bed, and that an additional charge would apply if we wanted futons. I explained that I wanted to experience sleeping on a tatami mat as I hadn't before, and asked if they could at least set up one. He still insisted we sleep on the bed since there was one. If futon service isn't available for one or two people, they should have informed me at check-in, rather than making me go back and forth multiple times before getting an answer. I will not be staying here again!

Breakfast and Dinner are included.
Very Limited food choice. Time is limited for buffet breakfast and dinner, e.g. 8:15-9:30am, 7:15-8:30pm. NO advance notice was given before reservation. I will never visit the hotel again as food variety is very very limited.

Overall an average stay. Ryokan gets a little crowded with tour groups coming in bus loads. Water pressure in the room can drop drastically when many people are using the shower at the same time. Buffet breakfast and dinner were above average but variety is the same everyday. Outdoor and indoor baths were above average.
