4-Star Hotels in Takayama City

Yuu 游 is an amazing ryokan. We (family of 4) had a very nice two nights' stay there. The Japanese style breakfast (you can choose western or Japanese, but obviously Japanese style is the winner) & dinner included in the package is simply amazing! And be sure to try Takayama Sake too. It goes so well with Hida beef:) just can't get enough. To get there from Takayama JR station (bus station there too), be sure to board the bus that goes to ipposui. We didn't rent a car because we are not used to driving in snowy weather. But everyone working in Yuu is super friendly, even drives us for a short trip out... And of course, the onsen is amazing too! Unfortunately stay there!

Overall, everything was good, and we had a pleasant stay. However, I would just like to mention the hotel’s occupancy policy. Although the room had two single beds, the booking was only for one adult, and an additional charge was required for the second adult. We respect the hotel’s policy, but we hope the hotel may consider reviewing this in the future. Apart from this, everything else was good, and we enjoyed our stay.

The location is excellent, just a few minutes' walk across from the station. The service was superb. The foreign front desk staff member was very enthusiastic and helpful. Besides basic check-in, he also assisted us in finding the shops we needed. Upon check-in, there were clear instructions available in various languages. Breakfast was a semi-buffet à la carte style, with three time slots to choose from. The room was clean, tidy, and spacious, exactly as pictured. Even the drinks in the mini-bar were delicious; we enjoyed buying Hida beef and cooking it ourselves. ‼️ The only drawback: there was an issue with the range hood/ventilation system in the room. Around 11 PM, a strong cooking oil smell suddenly filled the room, possibly from another guest frying meat, and it quickly spread throughout our room via the air conditioning or some other system. It was late, and we were almost asleep, so we didn't report it to the hotel directly. Secondly, if you cook meat yourself, the ventilation isn't very effective (it seems there's no range hood or it's just poor), as the room ends up smelling quite a bit. Friends planning to cook should be aware of this. Other than that, I highly recommend it.

Super conveniently located just next to Takayama Station and right beside the Nohi Bus Terminal, making it an excellent base for getting around especially by public transport to Shirakawa go or Toyama or Nagoya. Unlike many hotels in Japan with compact room sizes, this hotel offers a more spacious setup, complete with a kitchen, cooking utensils, and even a washer-dryer — perfect for longer stays or added comfort. It is also within easy walking distance to Miyagawa Morning Market and Takayama Old Town, with plenty of Hida beef restaurants nearby for a great local dining experience.

First off, the location is super convenient, just about a three-minute walk from Takayama Station, and there are restaurants and convenience stores nearby. The room layout is typical for a business hotel, but the space is much larger, and the bed is big, making for a very comfortable stay. As for service, the front desk staff were very friendly and thoroughly explained the hotel's facilities and operating hours during check-in. Hardware-wise, it's generally a bit old, but there aren't any major issues with functionality. The only problem is the shower setup uses old-fashioned separate knobs for hot and cold water, which can make adjusting the water temperature a bit tricky.

Stay was worth every penny. Hotel was located very close to train station and bus station so travelling to and out from it was convenient. Check in process was fast and easy to understand. They even had tea ready during checkin Room was decently sized and very clean. I arrived during spring and the beds were so comfortable and warm The highlight of the hotel has got to be the onsen. They have both private onsen that you can book for an hour and common onsen. If you go around midnight (the onsens are open till 1am), its completely empty and you can enjoy it all for yourself. Word of warning though, you can probably be seen if you're standing close to the edge of the public open air onsen so maybe dont do that (or do whatever floats your boat). After the onsen you can help yourself to free drinks and snacks They had beautiful sakura blossoms during that time, and a public foot bath that can be enjoyed by all. I loved my stay here and will definitely return if I have a chance.

Easy to access- just confirm online to get details to get into hotel. They lock the hotel at 10pm for safety purpose. Location is good to get to other destination. A short drive to the local popular areas. Kombini just opposite and if need others, walking distance. Cleanliness is okay, no issues. Spacious enough for our 4 luggages to open. Hanging area abit small but small issue. There is washing machine in the room. Mini kitchen area and microwave oven available also. Room wifi is available which is excellent as we stayed on the highest floor and lobby wifi is too far away. Thank you, enjoyed our stay! Enjoyed our stay, thank you!

I stayed there for 3d2n on my trip to Takayama with my sister and son. They offered great hospitality and delicious hide beef breakfast. They even offered the free kimono trying and allow us to wear it to walk around at Sanmachi-dori for a day. We also booked their private outdoor onsen, it was really great! The only setback is their location abit far from City Center, we will need to walk 30mins to bus station, morning market and old street. But the view and weather is comfortable and nice on the way to there. You can take cab too. I wish i can come back one day :)

The assigned room was not the one I booked. Instead of East Wing with a mountain view, I got assigned to South Wing, not sure if it is a mountain view but definitely not what I expected (I will attach a photo). But generally, I still had a fantastic experience there. The location is great for me because it is near Shinhotaka Ropeway. The open air onsen was beautiful, I liked it a lot, and went every night. The food was fantastic too! I am not well versed with Japanese food culture, but basically it was the traditional course meal (only dinner) you probably will have in a decent Japanese restaurant. I am a vegetarian, the hotel is prepared for my diet every breakfast and dinner. I must say I am really amazed with their food culture and knife skill. Their front desk was helpful with my needs too like a nail cutter, plaster etc.

I had a very relaxing three-night stay at Okada Ryokan. The service was excellent—staff were consistently warm and attentive, especially during meal times, which made the experience feel extra special. The food was simple and clean. I enjoyed it a lot but I was getting a little bored of it by the 5th meal. We added on a hida beef steak after seeing a few Japanese tourist ordering it. If you like fatty and soft beef, you should try it. The public onsen is spacious, with four pools. The outdoor pool is big and quiet. The room was comfortable and well heated for winter. The private onsen in the room was a highlight; it easily fits two people and was perfect for relaxing after a long day. This ryokan is over 100 years old, with parts of the structure dating back around 150 years. For a building of that age, I’d say it’s been well maintained. A small part of me wish the bathroom could be newer and cleaner but I would be missing the whole point. Staying here truly feels like stepping back in time—it was a unique and memorable experience. There are two local ski resorts within a 15-minute drive, and Takayama is about a 45-minute drive away.
