Eupen, located in the Liège province of eastern Belgium near the German border, has a population of approximately 20,000 and is the capital of the German-speaking part of Belgium. The city has a long history and has been heavily influenced by German culture. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, it was annexed by Prussia, and after World War I, it was incorporated into Belgium in 1920. Therefore, German remains the primary language of the city. Eupen's city center retains many 18th and 19th-century buildings, with the Church of St. Nicholas being one of the most representative historical buildings. The area around the City Hall Square also boasts a rich traditional atmosphere. Eupen is also an important cultural and administrative center in eastern Belgium, home to institutions such as the German-speaking Community Parliament.
