Hotels in Ancient City Tourist Cultural Area, Datong

Ive just left the Inn and on the train to the next destination. I wish I could stay longer as this was such a pleasant stay. The boss lady was so nice. I booked just a basic room but got upgraded to almost a studio flat with separate bedroom in the mezzanine and lounge downstairs. Everytime I come back from sightseeing, all hot tired, the boss lady gave me a bowl of delicious melons. It was sweet and juicy. The best melons I have had. The second time she also gave me bananas. It was so much needed. The hotel is in the perfect location. Thank you for a wonderful stay. 1. From Datongnan station there are buses 608 or 61 which takes you directly to Huayansi stop, less than 1min from the hotel. However, the hotel frontage is a jewelry shop, I didn't know so ended up walking up/down the street for 10mins before the boss lady realised and came out to tell me I have arrived. 2. If you want to go to Yungang Grottoes. From the same bus stop take bus 38, then change to bus 3 to get to the Grottoes. Journey time about an hour in total. And cost 4RMB (2RMB per bus). However, you have to set up some kind of public travel app from Wechat to get the QR code to pay the bus fare. I didn't know this. Fortunately, some nice people helped pay my fare, then another lovely girl helped set up the app enabling me to use the bus from then as when I arrived and took the bus from the train station to hotel Wechatpay didn't work. Fortunately the driver let me ride for free as I guess he realised Im foreign and don't have this app. Only when I took the bus to Yungang Grottoes, the girl told me I need to set up the travel app etc and helped me set it up. 3. The hotel is also right opposite to the Huayan temple. A beautiful ancient temple. Deffo can't be missed. Honestly, the hotel is quite good. It still looks grand and upscale. The room was spacious, clean, and well-equipped, and the service was excellent. The food wasn't expensive, and the hotel's location is fantastic; getting anywhere is incredibly convenient. My only complaint is that the ground floor feels a bit chaotic, with some small shops at the entrance/exit detracting from the hotel's image.

Had a fantastic stay! We booked the 'sky-light room,' which was very quiet, allowing us to sleep soundly until morning. The front desk attendant was incredibly warm and helpful; she brought ice packs for my wife's sprained ankle and even lent us a charging cable. The guesthouse is conveniently located directly across from the old town city wall entrance, where you can climb up for free to enjoy panoramic views of the ancient city.

Datong Hotel, once a state guesthouse in Datong, has a distinguished history of hosting foreign dignitaries, including visits from premiers and, more recently, a Thai princess and her entourage. This long-standing tradition of high-level hospitality has cultivated an exceptionally refined service standard. The hotel lobby is grand and elegant, and the rooms are spotless and well-maintained. Breakfast offers a wide variety of choices, and the service is excellent.

Stepping into the room, I was instantly wowed by the seamless blend of technology and aesthetic design! The in-room smart voice control was incredibly responsive. The bedding felt like sleeping on clouds, and the separate wet/dry bathroom design was absolutely perfect. Every detail exuded a light luxury vibe; staying here felt like a top-tier reward for both body and mind~ 🌟 The location is super convenient, close to everything. It was easy to get to popular foodie spots and explore the ancient city's attractions. The hotel service was also excellent; they helped with luggage storage, and there was even traditional clothing available for a fun experience!

Located within the ancient city, it was very convenient. It was raining when I went, and I was planning to visit Wutai Mountain later, so the receptionist even helped me check if Wutai Mountain was closed. Because I had a lot of luggage, she helped me carry it all to my room and even brought me some washed fruit. I loved the interior design; it was bright and spacious with a traditional Chinese style, and the whole room was controlled by Xiao Ai (a smart speaker). The shower water was very hot, and although it opened in 2025, the facilities were complete. Since I was traveling with an elderly person and my dog, the receptionist helped me carry my luggage to the car after I checked out! This was a great start to my Shanxi trip—I'll definitely stay here again next time I'm in Datong! P.S. The cats are all so cute!

The hotel staff were incredibly accommodating. They upgraded us to a family room, and the breakfast spread was fantastic, offering a great mix of local Shanxi specialties and Western options. We wanted to extend our stay in the same room, but it wasn't available. However, the lobby staff went above and beyond to arrange a king-size room for us. While it was a bit pricier, it felt completely worth it. The TV was a little small, but the rewind function was a great bonus, allowing us to catch up on shows.

Decided last minute to escape the summer heat in Datong and chose the Wyndham Garden Hotel, located about a kilometer from the ancient city. The hotel is very new, with plenty of parking both above and underground. The front desk staff were quite welcoming during check-in and check-out (special shout-out to Ms. Jiang and Ms. Jiao!). The room had all the basic amenities, and housekeeping was quick to respond. Areas for improvement: The room cleaning wasn't thorough, as there were food crumbs on the sofa from the previous guest. Since it's a new hotel, there was a strong, lingering renovation smell in the room, and no fresh air system. I tried opening the window, but it didn't help much. Also, there was someone trying to sell something (??) on the way from the front desk to the elevators, and it happened every time I passed by (though I couldn't hear what they were selling, it really detracted from the experience). That's all! 🌈

Facilities: The facilities are excellent, with smart home controls for everything – curtains, lights, TV, alarm clock, all powered by Tmall Genie. Everything looks quite new. Cleanliness: The hygiene was okay, but I'm not sure if it was an allergy specific to Datong or something else, but after one night, my nose felt itchy and I kept sneezing. It got much better after I turned on the air conditioning. Environment: The hotel's internal environment is good. It's about 2-3 kilometers from the ancient city, which is a comfortable bike ride away. The hotel also has slow-charging stations, so if you're driving, you can charge your car overnight. We just went directly into the ancient city for meals. Service: The service attitude was very good.

Just a few suggestions: 1. Could you please add a handheld showerhead to the shower? It's quite frustrating to only have a rainfall shower. 2. There's a mirror directly facing the bed; it would be great if that could be removed, as it's considered bad luck. 3. The area around the sink is damp and there were some small cockroaches; I hope it can be thoroughly cleaned. For a supposed 4-star hotel, it was quite an unpleasant stay, especially since I specifically booked a deluxe room. To be honest, I'm quite disappointed.
