Once the architectural muse for the Empire State Building, the historic R.J. Reynolds building is now home to The Kimpton Cardinal Hotel. We’ve enjoyed mixing Southern manners and modern flair, with a little mischief thrown in. Step through our magnificent Art Deco entryway into a lavish social living room or meet us on the patio for Chef's Daily Oysters. Step outside to explore downtown Winston-Salem and her thriving art, music and foodie scene.

I booked this hotel because I'm a sucker for older buildings with Art Deco architecture. When I walked into the lobby, i was pleased...it appeared to have delivered in that department. The gold elevators, the floors, the fixtures were all exactly what I was looking for. Sadly, once we got up to our room, the charm of the hotel ended with a thud. The room was dark. We fumbled for the light switch, and a single low-watt lightbulb flickered on by the bed. The rest of the stay, I tried to get some kind of illumination (other than the flashlight on my phone) but was thwarted at every attempt. The floor lamp's bulb was burnt out. Other switches did nothing. The curtains were impossible to budge or even reach. It felt like we were in a cave...a cave with dated carpeting and beat up furniture. It's sad, because this building could be such an amazing hotel if they put a little love and design into the rooms. We ate at the restaurant downstairs for dinner and it was pretty good. Over all, however, I say thumbs down. Kimpton, I thought you guys would do better than this!

Great location and we were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. Near some great restaurants. Valet parking is $22. Breakfast was good. No free water bottles for silver members which is a disappointment. One of the elevators was very shaky and noisy and that was the one that opened every time except one. A family waiting with me refused to enter it because of the condition. The other elevator that I rode once was fine.

Although it is a 20-minute drive from the high-point exhibition, this hotel is very cost-effective, parking is convenient, there are many restaurants around, and it is quiet. I recommend this hotel for business trips. And the front desk has a contact form for takeaway, very intimate!

The staff members here were helpful and professional. We did find trash that wasn't ours under an end table. Other than that, the room seemed to be in good shape. The pool wasn't open, but it is located outside in front of the building. Waffles and other breakfast items were available, but all the tables had been removed from the breakfast area. Sad as there was a nice wooded overlook to enjoy.

The staff was very courteous while we stayed here during a snow storm. Housekeeping, front desk staff and Nicole at the Bistro on Sunday night Jan. 16, have done a splendid job. We were very comfortable here and will stay here again. Judith Smith

What a great place, all the staff are so warm and welcoming and up for a laugh and a chat. Miss Pat in the dining room is an absolute sweetheart in every way. My daughter loved the waffle making machine and was shown how to use it to get optimal results and told where to buy one. I understand some people stay her on business for weeks on end. I can see why, it has everything you need. For us, as a British family coming to the States for some famous Southern hospitality, this provided us with the perfect example. Thank you. :)

GGuest UserThe room was very clean and spacious for a double queen. The pool was actually warm, and nice to use, with a very clean area. The staff was so friendly and accommodating to needs. We enjoyed our stay immensely. Only complaint is the price of staying at any hotel, but for the price, you get things that make for a good stay. Nice hot breakfast included.
GGuest UserMy husband and I spent our anniversary weekend in Winston-Salem. We always stay at Hilton affiliated properties, so we booked for 2 nights at this property due to location and amenities. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The lobby and pool areas were extremely nice. We had a king junior suite, which was nice in size. The bed was super comfortable. Here are a few suggestions for improvement: the a/c unit was not in the “bedroom” part of the suite, so it got very hot laying in bed. The a/c unit is an older model…there was a wall thermostat but it didn’t work. The bathroom looked all new, but there was a ton of mold in the shower. Wallpaper was peeling of the walls in the hall. The carpet in the hallway on the first floor needed a serious cleaning. Would I come back, yes…but I do think this property needs to work on the details.
GGuest UserIn town for 1 night to visitan ill parent. Booked this location last minute online. We had a pet so we paid an additional $15 fee for the dog. Mattress was adequate for one nights sleep. But the room needed some housekeeping attention. The bath towels were full of hair...not ours. The vanity light and ceiling were disgustingly stained. Hotel was in no way accommodating to the comcerns. I was offered my $15 pet fee back. WHAT...my pet was not the problem. The probpem is the lack of sanitation, attention and customer service at this location. The lady who checked us out said she was going to check the towels. THEY SHOULDVE BEEN CHECKED BEFORE YOU GAVE US THE ROOM...NOT WHEN WE ARE LEAVING. Although they are independently owned I will be contacting Choice and sharing the photos.
GGuest UserChose the location due to proximity to family we were visiting. Location is great -- close to highways, mall, and lots of restaurants. Once inside, though, we were surprised at the age of the hotel and its need for updates and repairs. The elevator was small and finicky; it liked to alarm for no reason when getting in. The hallways were hot and needed vacuuming. Our room was very spacious, with the door to the hall and bathroom placed at an angle to increase accessibility. The carpet in the room was stained, there was a hole punched in the wall, mildew on the shower curtain, a pink mystery stain on the ceiling in the shower, dead insects in the ceiling light in the bathroom, no extra toilet paper (we quickly ran out), and no tissues in the built-in tissue holder on the sink. Relatives of ours in another room said their soap holder shelf in their shower was ripped out and there was a hole in its place--no covering/tape/anything. We were informed that there would be no maid service during our stay (if staying less than 7 days) due to lack of staff, so if we needed anything, you had to go to the front desk for it. Breakfast was available; the only hot items were waffles or instant grits (hot water was available). Overall, the property seemed in need of a deep clean at a minimum, or at best, an update. The price is reasonable, but I would rather pay a bit more for a better-kept property with daily maid service available.
GGuest UserThis hotel has seen better days-such as back in 1995 perhaps. I've actually stayed here multiple times the last few months because of the location, but this last trip made me decide it's time to move on. I travel every week for work, and some things I look for are: cleanliness of course, soft pillows, decent towels, air conditioning that works, friendly people, walls that aren't paper thin, and rooms that aren't a hot mess. Pros: location, breakfast (though I've never had it), water pressure. Cons: Ever heard of the expression, ”lipstick on a pig?” This describes this hotel perfectly. You enter the lobby and it's beautiful-really is. Apparently they did a remodel. That's where the remodel ends. From the lobby, you enter the 3 elevators. All are nasty. They appear to be more like freight elevators, than elevators that are off a big beautiful lobby. They kind of smell, walls/floor are gross, and you get out of them and generally feel dirty. The rooms are circa 1995. Nothing is updated. Again, I have stayed here probably 5-6 times, so I have seen multiple rooms. The carpets are foul and fraying. The walls are stained up. The bathroom has super old faucets and sprayers, dirt in the corners, and the shower curtain/liner has seen way better days. My last room that finally made me decide to be a little crazy and stay elsewhere next time, had an air conditioning system that banged when it turned on, stayed on for a few minutes, then went off, and would bang again 30 minutes later. This room also had this phone whose picture I attached. All the buttons have been removed and it's filthy. The room I had before this one had an adjoining room. The door adjoining the 2 rooms was missing a lock and wasn't even flush against the wall (picture attached). I bring a door stopper with me on all my trips that I jammed up under this door-the only reason why I had kept the room and I was super tired. Anyway, I will stay at the Hampton a block away or the Courtyard my next trips. Just set your expectations correctly if you stay here.
GGuest UserMy experience was taxing to say the least. I arrived, after working an eight-hour day and traveling five hours, to a room that had old urine stains at the base of the toilet (both sides). The staff immediately provided a replacement, but it had the same issue. The third room was much better but clearly had not been used or dusted in a long time. The staff member did state that they do not typically have much business. I would expect that there is ample time to clean the rooms, even spot-checking the ones not in use. If I had had the energy, I would have taken the loss and gone to a different hotel. Luckily, I was checking out after two nights. I will not be returning, frequenting any Baymont properties, or recommending to anyone.
GGuest UserThe staff is very helpful and takes great care of me! Everyone has gone above and beyond to help. I have access to laundry, dishes, full size fridge, microwave and a stovetop. This location is close to the mall and plenty of restaurants.
GGuest UserSleep inn is the best and most comfortable hotel chain in the United States, at a reasonable price. The bed and the bed were very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was very rich and the passengers were of high quality and clean.
GGuest UserThis is a wonderful place to say besides some minor glitches. It’s now going on 24 hrs since we turned in our towels and have yet to receive fresh ones. When asked about receiving them the young lady responded with “we are out”. So we shall wait and see if we receive any today. Other then this one incident we have never had issues here before. My family and I strongly recommend staying here.!
