Best Time to Visit Beijing: Seasonal Travel Tips for Canadians

Beijing has four distinct seasons, and Canadians will easily recognize its freezing winters and sweltering summers. Proper trip timing is key to a comfortable, enjoyable visit. Below, I break down seasonal weather, crowd levels, and major festivals that impact travel plans.
Spring and Autumn: The Sweet Spots for Beijing Sightseeing
March–May (spring) and September–November (autumn) are Beijing’s best travel seasons. These shoulder seasons feature mild temperatures, low humidity, and far fewer tourists than peak periods. Days are ideal for outdoor sightseeing, while cool evenings make strolling historic sites pleasant and relaxed.
This is the perfect time to explore open-air landmarks including the Great Wall, Summer Palace, and Temple of Heaven. Spring brings blooming blossoms across city parks, while autumn covers Beijing in stunning golden and red foliage, creating picture-perfect sightseeing conditions.
Visiting Beijing in Summer and Winter: What to Expect
- Summer (June–August): Beijing’s summer is hot and humid, with temperatures frequently climbing above 35°C, which can make outdoor sightseeing exhausting. The biggest advantage of visiting in summer is extended daylight hours, allowing you to squeeze in more daily activities. To beat the heat, plan all outdoor landmark visits in the early morning and keep hydrated to prevent heat exhaustion.
- Winter (December–February): Cold, dry winter weather will feel very familiar to Canadian travellers. While warm winter layers are a must, this is an underrated travel season with huge perks. Tourist crowds thin out drastically, major attractions become quiet and peaceful, and Beijing’s historic landmarks take on a tranquil, crisp winter charm.
Two major holidays disrupt travel routines: Chinese New Year (late Jan–mid Feb) and National Day Golden Week (Oct 1–7). Lunar New Year offers vibrant cultural celebrations but brings huge domestic crowds and occasional business closures. National Week floods major sites with tourists, so avoid these periods for relaxed sightseeing.

Must-Visit Attractions: Top Things to Do in Beijing

Beijing’s top attractions combine timeless imperial history and authentic local culture. Whether you have 3 days or a full week, these must-see spots and practical on-the-ground tips will help you avoid stress and maximize your visit.
Top Beijing Attractions Overview
Below is a streamlined guide to Beijing’s must-see landmarks, including key highlights, visiting tips, and ideal timing to help Canadian travellers plan efficient, stress-free sightseeing.
Attraction | Core Highlights | Best Time to Visit | Practical Travel Tips |
|---|---|---|---|
UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s largest imperial palace complex (720,000㎡), home to 24 ancient emperors. Adjacent Tiananmen Square is one of the globe’s largest public squares, representing Beijing’s iconic central landmark area. | Early morning (8:30 AM opening) | Book timed-entry Forbidden City tickets online in advance; no reliable walk-up tickets in peak seasons. Use north/east entrances for fewer crowds. Spend 2–3 hours exploring. Carry ID for routine security checks at Tiananmen Square and avoid midday crowds. | |
The most traveller-friendly Great Wall section with fully restored ramparts, breathtaking mountain scenery, far fewer crowds than the tourist-heavy Badaling section, plus cable car and toboggan facilities. | Early morning on clear weekdays | Located a 1.5-hour drive from central Beijing. Private car transfers are strongly recommended over complicated public transit. Plan 3–4 hours onsite; take the cable car uphill to avoid strenuous climbing. | |
A classic imperial worship park and a window into local Beijing life. Locals gather daily for tai chi, dancing, and traditional music, delivering authentic cultural vibes. | Sunset / early morning | Visit at sunset for the most atmospheric local scenes. Dress modestly and keep voices low to respect local customs and the site’s cultural significance. | |
Sprawling lakeside imperial retreat featuring Kunming Lake, ancient wooden corridors, classic stone bridges, and peaceful royal garden scenery. | Late afternoon (golden hour) | Soft late-afternoon light creates perfect photography conditions. Take time to wander the waterfront walkways and relax by the lake for a leisurely experience. | |
The best viewpoint for panoramic, unobstructed skyline views of the entire Forbidden City and Beijing’s historic old town core. | Clear daytime, sunset | Visit on sunny, clear days for crisp, postcard-worthy views. Pair with a Forbidden City visit for a seamless one-day historic itinerary. | |
Beijing Hutongs (Nanluoguxiang & Drum Tower Area) | Ancient narrow alleyways that preserve old Beijing’s courtyard culture and local lifestyle. Nanluoguxiang offers boutique shopping and snacks, while nearby Drum Tower hutongs retain authentic residential charm. | Late afternoon to evening | Stroll Nanluoguxiang for casual snacks and souvenirs. For a less commercial, genuine local experience, explore the quiet alleyways around the Drum and Bell Towers. |

Beijing Travel Food Tips: What to Eat and Where to Find It

Beijing’s culinary scene boasts centuries of imperial flavours and local classics. As a Canadian traveller who’s sampled the city’s best bites, I’ll share must-try dishes, reliable spots, and common tourist food traps to avoid.
Must-Try Beijing Dishes: From Peking Duck to Hotpot
Beijing’s culinary identity is defined by classic, must-order dishes that every first-time visitor should taste. From world-famous roast duck to comforting local staples, here are the iconic bites and trusted restaurants to add to your food itinerary:
- Peking Duck: Beijing’s signature dish, featuring ultra-crispy roasted skin, tender juicy meat, and traditional servings of thin pancakes, hoisin sauce, cucumber, and scallions. For different flavour styles, choose Da Dong for modern, refined tastes or Deyuan for authentic, traditional classic Peking duck.
- Beijing-Style Mongolian Hotpot: A perfect warm meal for cool weather. It features a mild, clear broth paired with fresh lamb slices, light and less greasy than spicy hotpot. Reliable local options include the historicDong Lai Shun and service-oriented chain Haidilao.
- Jing Jiang Rousi & Handmade Dumplings: Jing Jiang Rousi (sweet bean shredded pork) is a classic local savoury dish best eaten with thin pancakes. For fresh, handmade Chinese dumplings favoured by locals and travellers alike, head to Mr Shi’s.
Beijing Food Experiences: Teahouses, Street Food, and What to Skip
For a cultural evening, visit Lao She Teahouse, ideal for first-timers. It offers tea ceremonies, classic Beijing snacks, and live folk performances including acrobatics and traditional opera.
For authentic street food, head to hutong lanes near Nanluoguxiang and Drum Tower for affordable fresh bites like jianbing and fried chestnuts. Crucially, skip Wangfujing Snack Street — it’s overpriced, low-quality, and purely tourist-focused.

Getting Around Beijing: Transportation Tips for First-Time Visitors

Photo via Beijing Daily App
Beijing’s public transit is affordable, clean, and user-friendly. Here are my top tips for first-time visitors to navigate the city smoothly for sightseeing and day trips.
Using the Beijing Metro: Routes, Costs, and Insider Tips
The Beijing Metro is my top downtown travel pick. With 27 lines, full English signage and announcements, and fares of 3–5 RMB per ride, it’s budget-friendly and reliable. Grab a rechargeable Yikatong transit card at any station for seamless travel on metro and buses.
Avoid weekday rush hours (7–9 AM, 5–8 PM) and busy weekend afternoons near tourist sites, as trains get extremely crowded.
DiDi, Taxis, and Private Drivers: When to Use Each
DiDi, China’s equivalent of Uber, is the best option for door-to-door city travel. It’s cheaper and more reliable than street taxis with transparent pricing. Download the app and set up foreign payment before arrival to avoid onsite hassle.
Street taxis work for short downtown trips, but private drivers are far better for Great Wall and Summer Palace day trips. They eliminate confusing public transit transfers and let you travel at your own pace.
Where to Stay in Beijing: Best Neighbourhoods for Every Traveller
Your accommodation neighbourhood shapes your Beijing experience. I’ve sorted the best areas for Canadian travellers based on sightseeing needs, budget, and travel style.
Dongcheng District: Best Location for Sightseeing

Dongcheng District is perfect for first-time visitors. This central area is walking-distance from core landmarks: the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven, and top hutongs, cutting down commute time significantly. Dongcheng offers full-range accommodation, from budget hutong guesthouses to mid-range and luxury hotels, suiting all traveller budgets.
Chaoyang and Sanlitun: Beijing's Modern, Cosmopolitan Hub

Chaoyang District’s Sanlitun area is Beijing’s most international hub, home to five-star hotels, upscale malls, embassies, and a vibrant expat dining and nightlife scene.
Close to the trendy 798 Art District, it’s ideal for travellers wanting modern comforts alongside occasional historic sightseeing, with a short metro ride to old-town attractions.

The hotel has a nice and friendly old Charme. It was built in 2008. So it's a new hotel built with old style. The rooms have been clean. The service was friendly. The area is great, close to the main shopping street and tourist attractions.
Anyhow the interior has reached some age. Carpets show colorized spots, the swimming pool missing tils. And during a heavy July rain parts of the front roof parted.FromCAD 185

Five-star review! I stayed at the Sofitel Beijing Central for four consecutive days, and my overall experience was extremely satisfying. The location is excellent, close to Jianguomen subway station, making it very convenient to get to Wangfujing, Tiananmen Square, and the National Museum. The room was clean and tidy, the bedding was comfortable, and the soundproofing was good, so I rested very well. The front desk staff were warm and polite, and their service was prompt and responsive; communication was smooth whenever I had a request. The hotel environment is quiet and elegant, and the facilities are well-maintained. Traveling with children, staying here made getting around and sightseeing worry-free and convenient. It's a great choice for exploring urban Beijing, especially since the young lady at the Chance hotel front desk upgraded our room for free and gave us a breakfast voucher for one adult and two children for one day, considering our late arrival. I would definitely consider staying here again on my next visit to Beijing – it truly exceeded my expectations!FromCAD 141

I've stayed at the Aviator Hotel Beijing for multiple business trips to Sanyuanqiao, and it's always my go-to choice. What impresses me most are the exceptionally well-maintained facilities and the excellent front desk service, especially from Heyao and Linyan. It's an older five-star hotel, but they do an outstanding job with upkeep. The rooms are very spacious, the water pressure is stable, and you get hot water instantly without having to let it run. There are plenty of power outlets and USB ports conveniently located by the bed and desk. The curtains offer great light blocking. The mattress and bedding are high quality, and they offer two types of down pillows (soft and firm). The central air conditioning maintains a very precise temperature, so it's never too hot or too cold. Plus, there's ample parking. The overall facilities are mature and reliable, built with solid materials. Both the in-room amenities and the public recreational facilities far exceed those of other hotels in the same price range and location. I can't find a single fault with the hardware; it's truly the top choice for business travelers.FromCAD 82

I had an exceptional stay at this hotel in Beijing. From the moment I arrived, the staff provided warm, professional, and attentive service that made me feel truly welcome. The room was spacious, spotless, and beautifully designed, with comfortable bedding and stunning views of the city.
The hotel’s facilities were outstanding, especially the breakfast selection, which offered a wide variety of delicious local and international dishes. The location was also perfect, making it easy to explore Beijing’s major attractions while still enjoying a peaceful and luxurious environment.
What impressed me the most was the attention to detail and the genuine hospitality shown by every member of the team. They went above and beyond to ensure my stay was comfortable and memorable.
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Beijing for business or leisure. It truly delivers a five-star experience in every aspect, and I look forward to staying here again in the future.FromCAD 144

Cleanliness: The room was very clean.
Amenities: They have an air purifier and a bathtub where you can enjoy a bath with a city view. At night, you can also watch movies as there are many free films available on the TV.
Service: I booked a week in advance and requested a high-floor room with the front desk. When I checked in early, there wasn't an available room yet, so I left my luggage there. When I checked in later that afternoon, the front desk provided service with a smile throughout. We were three people, and I had booked two breakfasts, but the front desk kindly gave us an extra one.

The location is very convenient, just a few minutes' walk from Wangfujing. There are many snack shops, restaurants and a few hair salons next to and in front of the hotel. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, assisting us with hailing a taxi and showing us how to get to the various attractions. The hotel even provided a small map to guide us on foot to and from the Palace Museum.
Very special is this hotel very family friendly, the have connecting room for the family to stay in, for us, we can take care of our girls without open the door and go to another room.
The daily housekeeping was very thorough. The female housekeeper responsible for our rooms 715 and 716 was particularly friendly, attentive, and responsible. My daughter accidentally spilled soy milk on the carpet and bed; I informed her, and she promised to handle it. When we returned to the room that evening, the carpet and bed were spotless, without any smell or stains. We were very satisfied with the hotel's service. Staying at the Orange Crystal Hotel in Wangfujing for my Beijing Forbidden City photoshoot was the perfect choice! The location is unbeatable, right on Wangfujing Street, with direct walking access to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. It's also super close to the Wangfu Century Ancient Style Makeup Studio, so after getting my Qing or Ming dynasty look done, I could head straight into the park for photos – everything flowed incredibly smoothly. The hotel was exceptionally generous with complimentary bottled water; I've stayed in countless hotels and never seen so much provided, so I didn't need to bring any of my own. The lobby amenities were thoughtful and complete, with a 24-hour self-service coffee machine and even building blocks for kids. It really maximized comfort for traveling with elderly family members and children. This is definitely my top choice for travel and photography trips!FromCAD 138

The hotel's location is fantastic, right in the New World Department Store building, with Chongmun Station on Subway Line 5 just downstairs. There are numerous large shopping malls nearby, lots of great restaurants, and it's convenient to get anywhere. The room's cleanliness was also very good. I particularly liked their hairdryer; it's very powerful, which is great for people with long hair. The only thing I was unhappy with was their internet 🛜 – it's really bad and often disconnects, especially in the bathroom. As soon as you enter, the Wi-Fi drops. I hope they can switch to a better network provider. Everything else deserves five stars!FromCAD 124

The staff had excellent professionalism, being friendly without being overly intrusive. The check-out process was simple and efficient. When I accidentally left a small item behind, they called me immediately and even helped mail it to me. Their handling of the situation was thorough and thoughtful, showing great care in the details. My entire stay was particularly comfortable. They could even help receive express deliveries for luggage and deliver them to the room, which saved a lot of hassle and time and effort. The hotel environment is decent, clean enough, but nothing to write home about. Its biggest advantage is the excellent location; it's just a few minutes' walk to the subway station, making it super convenient for commuting and sightseeing. The hotel's location is its biggest advantage, situated right in the heart of the Guomao CBD, making it incredibly convenient for business travelers. However, I'm not sure what event Mercedes-Benz was hosting, but the lobby area on the first floor was swarming with their staff, making it impossible to find a seat on the sofas. It was very crowded and made waiting for a taxi a terrible experience.
The guest rooms are spacious, clean, and tidy, with soft bedding and good soundproofing. The hotel also boasts a well-equipped gym, a heated swimming pool, and even a kids' play area, offering a wide range of recreational facilities. This was my first time staying at the Park Plaza. We came because my child had an exam at the Academy of Arts and Design's attached high school. When we arrived, I didn't even realize there was a hotel next door. What drew us in was the parking lot we spotted as we drove by, and it was indeed very close to the school. The security guard at the entrance confirmed there was plenty of parking, and we were impressed to find both above-ground and underground spaces. So, we decided to book a room. The price was reasonable, not expensive at all, and the hotel had everything: a restaurant, breakfast, and a gym.
Stepping into the lobby, it was bright, and a pleasant aroma filled the air, immediately giving us a holiday vibe and easing our nerves. The young lady at the front desk was incredibly warm and thorough during check-in. She double-checked our late checkout request multiple times to ensure it was fine. Knowing we were there for our child's exam, she even extended our checkout to 3 PM, which was a very rare and thoughtful gesture. Despite many students and parents checking in, it never felt crowded. The elevators were fast, room service was prompt, and the little robot delivering items was adorable and busy.
The room itself was spacious and clean. The first night, the hot water in the bathroom wasn't very hot, possibly due to a high number of guests, but the bathtub was very comfortable, and the bedding was cozy. There was a slight creak when turning over, but it was acceptable. Staff were quick to respond to any extra requests. Parking was free after registering at the front desk.
Overall, the value for money is good. I recommend it to anyone who needs a place to stay.FromCAD 108

Changping Town/Shisanling Resort Beijing|40.96km from city centre
This is our third time staying at Marriott Beijing Changping, and this time we opted for the 'Flying House' themed family room. The room features a bunk bed with a slide, which completely captivated our child, keeping them entertained for a long time. The room is well-equipped with children's amenities, including a baby toilet seat, a step stool, toiletries, and bathrobes. The only downsides are some safety concerns: the stone edges of the indoor hot tub are very sharp and lack corner protectors, and the upper bunk's guardrail is quite low, requiring parents to closely supervise their children. The hot spring area offers a wide variety of indoor and outdoor pools, all clean, with different depths, slides, and ball pits. The water temperature is perfect for kids, satisfying their desire to play in the water. The indoor kids' play area feels a bit old, with many damaged soft mats on the floor. There were no staff members supervising or assisting during playtime, so parents with young children should definitely accompany and watch them closely. The hotel is conveniently located next to Wanda Plaza, which has plenty of dining options and children's entertainment.FromCAD 143

Badaling Great Wall/Badaling Wildlife Park Beijing|56.95km from city centre
Finally checked into the Commune by the Great Wall, a Hyatt Centric property – specifically, the Bamboo House. This stay completely exceeded my expectations, so I'm sharing an honest review for anyone considering a visit.
The exterior features tightly packed natural bamboo poles, complemented by a black sloping roof. Walking along the forest path, you can see the building softly blending into the mountains and woods from a distance, without appearing out of place at all.
The most stunning feature is the independent outdoor bamboo tea room. Bamboo columns enclose a semi-transparent space with white sand covering the ground. Through the bamboo gaps, you can gaze at the mountains and forest. Sitting quietly and enjoying tea here creates an incredibly atmospheric experience, perfect for photos.
The public areas boast large floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the green trees outside like natural landscape paintings. During the day, light and shadows filter into the rooms through the bamboo poles, creating ever-changing scenery.
Practical Tips for Your Stay:
1. The room offers excellent privacy. It's a standalone building surrounded by dense trees, away from the hustle and bustle of public areas. It's ideal for those seeking quiet relaxation, couples on a getaway, or small gatherings of friends.
2. The building materials are natural bamboo, so there's a natural bamboo and wood scent. If you're sensitive to slight color variations or textures in natural materials, please be aware of this beforehand. The gaps in the bamboo create a soft, translucent feel; if you require ultimate privacy, simply pull down the indoor blackout blinds.
3. The hotel is located in a valley, so the temperature difference between morning/evening and daytime is greater than in the city. Remember to bring a light jacket if you plan to sit in the outdoor tea room in the evening.
4. The resort grounds are very large. I recommend driving in, as walking to and from the restaurant can be quite far. For dining, you can choose the hotel's restaurant or bring your own snacks and enjoy them in the outdoor tea room.
Areas for Improvement:
When I checked in, the room had just been cleaned, and there was still water on the floor, suggesting a rushed and less-than-thorough cleaning.
The 'Old Beijing style' afternoon tea, which looked great for photos in the lobby, consisted of pre-bought items of generally mediocre quality.FromCAD 198

Pros:
1. The hotel is nestled halfway up the mountain, offering fresh air and truly beautiful surroundings. It's a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle, and the hotel's decor and maintenance are quite good. Our butler, Bella, was incredibly meticulous and thoughtful, taking care of every little detail. She met all our needs, making our stay exceptionally comfortable.
2. There's a wide array of facilities and activities, including a mountainside hot spring, indoor pool, Hatha yoga, singing bowl therapy, a gym, and a kids' club. It's perfect for families, and the kids' club is large and newly renovated – it just reopened in May. It's definitely more fun than the kids' clubs at other hotels I've visited. Plus, children aged 4 and up can be supervised for free, which made my little one super happy!
3. The room key card came with a park map, showing hiking trails. There's an easy 5-kilometer mountain boardwalk, perfect for families, where you can visit the Eight Planets viewing platforms.
4. The breakfast was impressive! They had steaks, lamb chops, and a rich variety of both Chinese and Western dishes. However, the cured meats were generally a bit too salty.
Cons:
1. For a 5-star hotel, there was no safe in the room.
2. While there's an abundance of kids' activities, most of them come with a fee.
3. Since the kids' club was newly renovated, the smell was quite strong, making my eyes and throat uncomfortable.
Overall, we were still very satisfied. I imagine it would be even more atmospheric to visit in winter for the hot springs, though I expect it would be extremely crowded.FromCAD 284

Shangdi Industrial Park/Xisanqi Beijing|22.54km from city centre
The Xishan Hot Spring Hotel, touted as a 'land cruise,' certainly lives up to its name. We booked a family-themed package that included daily hot spring passes for 2 adults and 1 child, breakfast, one full buffet meal, and late-night snacks. The hot springs are very distinctive, especially the fish therapy and ******* medicine pools. They even provide face masks and hot compresses. The food selection is incredibly rich, with a seafood theme, and the cold drinks feature Häagen-Dazs. The second and fifth floors offer numerous family-friendly activities like go-karts, bowling, billiards, hopscotch, and a petting zoo – you'd need more than a day to try everything. The hot springs also offer overnight packages, with a variety of spacious and uniquely designed pods on the second floor and B1, offering excellent value for money. The biggest surprise this time was the 'pet companionship' service in the room. We were lucky enough to meet the adorable Ragdoll cat, Qiuqiu, who spent an unforgettable hour with our children. Overall, this is a fantastic hotel, and we'll definitely return if we get the chance!FromCAD 102

Shunyi Hot Spring Leisure Area Beijing|38.67km from city centre
It was freezing outside in winter, but super warm inside – I felt like I could wear a T-shirt, the air conditioning was excellent. The service was generally great. My child threw a beanbag up onto the ceiling, which was about three or four meters high, and the hotel staff even managed to get it down for us. I'm very grateful for that. I deducted 0.5 points for service because the front desk staff seemed clueless; when I asked where to feed the alpacas, they said they didn't know and that it was handled by the hot springs area, implying it wasn't under their management. They mentioned the hot springs and entertainment were outsourced. However, we found the alpacas just a short distance outside the hotel lobby entrance, along with geese, ducks, and chickens. There were three large and two small alpacas, and they were adorable. Do bring them some carrots and greens; they looked quite hungry. For breakfast, go early, before 8 AM, as it's very abundant. If you go later, you'll miss out on the delicious cream cakes. Dinner was a buffet due to New Year's, and the seafood was quite fresh for the hotpot. The hot springs were a bit crowded, but the kids had a good time, mostly hitting each other with ocean balls. There weren't many indoor hot spring pools, making it a bit cramped. The temperatures were all high, but it was very clean. They said there were outdoor pools too, but we didn't go as it was too cold.FromCAD 117

The rooms are clean and tidy, and come with a balcony. When checking in, you need to register your vehicle to park in the underground parking lot 🅿️, otherwise, you might be charged a parking fee. We had three king-size rooms, and 1119 had the best view, overlooking the lake from the balcony, with a beautiful sunrise in the morning. The room directly opposite could see the golf course behind, which was great for sunset views. The bathroom and bathtub are in separate spaces opposite each other, designed with two sinks for simultaneous use. The front desk is on the second floor, and the connecting corridor to the hot spring ♨️ is also on the same floor, though it's a bit of a walk. The buffet restaurant is on the first floor. Complimentary fruit was provided in the room.FromCAD 102

Even though the hotel is a bit old, it's very well-maintained. We arrived on a rainy day and stayed in (thanks to Kong Kong for the warm hospitality and upgrade!), enjoying the breeze on the balcony. But I didn't expect the next day, with the sun out, to be even more comfortable. I wish I had booked an extra night (thanks again to the professional Kong Kong) 😄😄. See the pictures for details.
P.S. Although I haven't actively pursued Globalist status, the Hyatt brand consistently impresses me, whether in Hong Kong, Sanya, or Beijing. I'll definitely be back.FromCAD 114

I frequently stay at this hotel, but this time was a huge disappointment. The front desk staff who checked me in made the whole experience very unpleasant. First, parking costs money, up to 80 yuan. Second, they still require a deposit – seriously, who still does that these days? Third, you have to go down to pick up your own food deliveries. Fourth, there wasn't enough hot water. And finally, the soundproofing is terrible; you can clearly hear conversations from the next room.FromCAD 157

This stay truly exceeded my expectations! I happened to check in on my birthday, and I was so touched by how thoughtful the hotel was.
1. **Surprise Upgrade**: When the front desk staff (they/them) found out it was my birthday, they proactively upgraded my room. That feeling of being quietly looked after was simply wonderful.
2. **Personal Touch**: The room was decorated for my birthday, and the handwritten card really stood out. The handwriting was neat and sincere, completely unlike a generic printed template. It instantly made me feel a sense of belonging.
3. **Flawless Service**: From check-in at the front desk to the concierge's guidance, every single staff member was incredibly friendly and professional. Their warmth and expertise made me feel so welcome.
Not only are the facilities excellent, but the soft skills in their service are also impeccable. Thank you for giving me such a memorable birthday. Next time I'm in the area, this will definitely be my first choice! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟FromCAD 116

My child chose this hotel for their college entrance exam because of its proximity to Luhe High School. We were very satisfied with all aspects of the hotel's service throughout the exam period. The front desk staff were warm and attentive, even delivering takeout directly to our room. The cleaning staff were also very thoughtful. The hotel also offered a refrigerator for storing items, and ice was provided for cold drinks. The freshly ground coffee from the front desk was also very fragrant and refreshing. Most of the guests during the exam period were students and parents, and the environment was very quiet, which was conducive to students studying and resting.FromCAD 50

Tian'anmen Square and Wangfujing Area Beijing|1.47km from city centre
My stay at the Waldorf Astoria Beijing was absolutely perfect, earning a full five-star review! I experienced both the main building and the traditional courtyard rooms. The location is superb, right next to Wangfujing and within walking distance to the Forbidden City, making getting around incredibly convenient. The hotel's design is truly unique and thoughtful. The rooms are spacious and elegant, the bedding is soft and comfortable, and the amenities are high-quality and smell wonderful – every detail shows great care. Our butler, Willow, provided attentive and thoughtful service; she was warm, polite, and perfectly balanced, never being intrusive. The breakfast spread was extensive, featuring both authentic Beijing specialties and delicious Western options. The afternoon tea was beautiful and tasted just as good as it looked. This is definitely the top luxury hotel to stay at when visiting Beijing. Highly recommended!FromCAD 1,277
Essential Beijing Travel Tips: Practical Advice Before You Go
These essential pre-trip and onsite tips cover visas, digital access, currency, etiquette, and safety to help Canadian travellers avoid common pitfalls.
Digital Essentials: WeChat Pay, and Alipay

Major Western apps (Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook) are unavailable in China. Prepare alternative mapping tools in advance and set up WeChat Pay or Alipay with your foreign bank card. Cashless payment is universal for transit, food, and shopping, making these apps essential for smooth travel.
Visa, Entry Requirements, and Currency Tips for Canadians
- Visa & Entry Policy: Canadian passport holders enjoy 30-day visa-free entry for tourism, business trips, family visits, and transit, valid from February 17 to December 31, 2026. Always double-check the latest policy updates before departure, as entry regulations are subject to adjustment.
- Currency & Cash Tips: The official currency is Chinese Yuan (RMB/CNY). International bank cards are accepted at ATMs of major branches such as Bank of China. Though mobile cashless payment dominates the city, keep a small amount of physical cash for street vendors and small local shops that do not support digital payments.
Cultural Etiquette and Things to Avoid in Beijing
- Historic & Temple Manners: Dress modestly when visiting temples and heritage sites, refrain from touching ancient artefacts, and keep your voice low to preserve a respectful atmosphere.
- Public Order: Never cut queues at tourist attractions, metro stations, or public facilities. Queue-jumping is widely considered impolite in local culture.
- Dining Etiquette: Avoid sticking chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice, as this gesture resembles traditional funeral customs and is considered unlucky.
- General Courtesy: Beijing locals are incredibly welcoming to foreign travellers. Simple politeness and consideration will make your interactions smoother and more pleasant throughout your trip.
Suggested Beijing Itineraries: How to Plan Your Trip

Below are two ready-made itineraries: a streamlined 3-day plan for quick trips, and a 7-day schedule to explore Beijing’s hidden gems in depth.
3 Days in Beijing: A First-Timer's Itinerary
Day 1: Core Historic Landmarks & Hutong Evening
Start early at Tiananmen Square, then explore the Forbidden City all morning and afternoon. Catch sunset views at Jingshan Park, then wander nearby hutongs for street food and local evening scenery.
Day 2: Mutianyu Great Wall Day Trip
Spend the full day exploring Mutianyu Great Wall. Head out early to avoid crowds, hike and sightsee through the afternoon, then return downtown for a relaxed evening dinner.
Day 3: Imperial Parks & Classic Dinner
Visit the Temple of Heaven in the morning to watch local daily activities, then explore the Summer Palace in the afternoon. Finish your trip with a classic Peking Duck dinner, optionally paired with a teahouse show or acrobatics performance.
Is 7 Days in Beijing Too Long? How to Fill a Week
Seven days in Beijing is absolutely worthwhile. A full week lets you skip rushed sightseeing and explore underrated highlights. Days 4–7 can cover the 798 Art District, Panjiayuan Antique Market, Beihai Park, and Yonghe Lama Temple.
Add visits to the Bell and Drum Towers, Sanlitun rooftop bars, and a day trip to the Ming Tombs. A week-long stay delivers a deep, authentic understanding of Beijing beyond typical tourist checklists.
Final Thoughts
Beijing uniquely blends ancient history and modern vitality. With friendly locals, convenient transit, distinct seasonal charm, and incredible food and sights, it is one of Asia’s most rewarding travel destinations and deserves a spot on every Canadian traveller’s bucket list.
Beijing Travel Tips FAQs
-
What should I know before travelling to Beijing?
Before travelling to Beijing, there are several key things to prepare. First, download a VPN before you leave Canada — many apps including Google, Instagram, and WhatsApp are blocked in China, and VPN downloads are also restricted once you arrive. Second, set up WeChat Pay or Alipay linked to your Canadian bank card, as Beijing is almost entirely cashless. Third, research your visa requirements for Canadian passport holders carefully, as China's entry policies change. Finally, download an offline map, as Google Maps does not function in China. Booking major attractions like the Forbidden City in advance is also strongly recommended as tickets often sell out. -
What are the main don'ts when visiting Beijing?
When visiting Beijing, avoid: relying solely on cash (card and cash acceptance is limited compared to mobile pay); visiting Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City without a plan — the crowds can be overwhelming without an early arrival or a guided tour; eating on Wangfujing Snack Street if you want authentic food (it is primarily a tourist trap); photographing military buildings or sensitive political sites; and shouting or behaving disruptively at temples and historic sites. Also never leave setting up your VPN until after you arrive in China, as VPN apps are blocked on the Chinese internet. -
Is 7 days in Beijing too long?
Absolutely not — 7 days in Beijing is not too long; in fact, many travellers wish they had more time. Beijing is one of the world's largest cities with an enormous number of historical, cultural, and modern attractions. A week allows you to comfortably visit the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, explore multiple Hutong neighbourhoods, discover the 798 Art District, browse Panjiayuan Antique Market, enjoy evening performances, and still have time for leisurely meals and unexpected discoveries. A 3-day visit will cover the highlights, but 7 days lets you experience Beijing at a relaxed, rewarding pace. -
What is the best area to stay in Beijing for first-time visitors?
For first-time visitors to Beijing, Dongcheng District is the most recommended neighbourhood. It places you within easy reach of the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven, and the Hutong alleyways. Staying near a metro station in this area means you can reach virtually any other attraction in the city within 30–40 minutes. If you prefer a more boutique, characterful stay, look for courtyard-style guesthouses in the Gulou or Nanluoguxiang Hutong area. For those who want a modern, international hotel environment with easy access to bars, restaurants, and shopping, Chaoyang or Sanlitun are excellent alternatives.
