Hotels in Zhanqiao/Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street, Qingdao

This was my worst experience staying at Atour Hotel, and I've stayed many times. First, the room's soundproofing was poor. Second, I checked in at 10 PM. My friend and I booked two executive king rooms. After checking in, one of the rooms had a bizarre layout; you had to go through a long corridor before turning into the actual room. This was completely different from the pictures I booked, and the usable space was also much smaller. I immediately went to the front desk to discuss it and was told that the hotel was full for the night and I could only change rooms tomorrow. The front desk staff's attitude was friendly, and they proactively registered me for a room change the next day. However, for such a strangely shaped room, completely inconsistent with the pictures and with significantly less usable space, shouldn't customers be notified in advance or have prior communication? Instead, they just checked me in directly, acting as if nothing happened if the customer didn't speak up.

It's rare to choose a historic building in the city center for accommodation. For this urban renewal study, I specifically chose this hotel, which is over 120 years old, and I highly recommend it. First, the pros: 1) The hotel's location is excellent. Since I wasn't driving, I opted to stay in the old town. This hotel is near Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street, opposite the Chocolate Museum, and leads directly to Qingdao's iconic landmark, Zhanqiao Pier. There are many exquisite old German buildings just by wandering around. It's also very close to the subway and Qingdao Station, making transportation quite convenient. 2) The European courtyard-style hotel design is truly beautiful, and the renovation of the old building was very successful. It's great for photos and perfect for sitting quietly in the courtyard with a coffee or tea in the morning or evening. It's very relaxing and pleasant. I recommend setting aside some time to simply unwind here. 3) The bed and pillows in the room were decent, offering a good night's sleep. The bathroom was equipped with a smart toilet, though it was a bit noisy at night. A special mention goes to the room's night light design; it illuminates just enough when you step down, not too bright, just right. 4) The service was better than I expected for a northern city. The front desk staff and the cleaning aunties were all very friendly. Since there was no refrigerator, I had to ask the front desk to store and retrieve items every time, which I'm very grateful for. 5) The hotel having a laundry room was a huge plus. One time, I forgot my clothes in the dryer, and a staff member kindly collected, folded, and placed them in my room. 6) There's also a retro Old Shanghai-style cafe & bar, the Furunli Cafe. If the cafe and the outdoor tables and chairs in the hotel courtyard were combined, it would create an even better atmosphere and a larger, more relaxing leisure space. Now, for some cons or suggestions: 1) The shower room doesn't have an anti-slip mat, which could easily lead to accidents, and the floor's anti-slip treatment isn't very good. 2) The breakfast was acceptable, but there was only one chef preparing meals and also responsible for cleaning tables. During busy times, this could be overwhelming. It's unsanitary for the same person to handle food and wipe tables; it would be better to separate these tasks. The auntie who cleans the outdoor areas could definitely spare some time during breakfast to help with cleaning. 3) There were quite a few mosquitoes. The hotel provided mosquito swatters, and some rooms even had electronic mosquito repellents outside. There are actually more tools and methods available to eliminate or reduce them. 4) The tables and chairs in the second-floor corridor and the courtyard are well-arranged and create a good ambiance. I noticed ashtrays on all the tables. In this era of health and environmental awareness, it would be best to limit smoking areas to provide a clean space for non-smokers. For instance, half of the tables could have signs prohibiting smoking instead of ashtrays, though I understand this might be a somewhat demanding request. 5) Other aspects, like steps leading to the rooms, are inconvenient for guests with luggage. However, I feel that if one chooses to stay in a historic building like this, these difficulties are manageable.

The location is fantastic! It's about a 10-minute walk to Zhanqiao Pier and the cathedral, and you can easily walk to attractions like Signal Hill. The mini-fridge was stocked with complimentary drinks, and it was my first time trying Laoshan White Flower Snake Grass Water – it was surprisingly palatable. Breakfast offered a good variety, and the soundproofing was excellent. The only minor drawback was the small room size. Food deliveries were brought to the front desk, and the disposable toiletries were of good quality; the toothbrush bristles weren't too hard. They even provided nail care items and mouthwash. Plus, they kindly extended our check-out time.

The location was great. Very close to the old town, cafes, and restaurants. Unfortunately, the room did not meet our expectations. We were two people but the room seemed prepared for just one person. There was mold in the bathroom, the shower flooded the whole bathroom every time, sinks didn’t drain, no towel hangers at all, the floor was quite dirty so that our socks were dark, there were dead mosquitoes on the mirror and the curtains and it was noisy outside at night. The photos show a kitchen included but there was no fridge, stove or dishes. The staff was not very accommodating. They didn’t greet us and didn’t inform us about the hotels amenities. For our last night, we got upgraded to a more expensive room but it was merely bigger and still had most of the same issues.

The hotel's location is truly fantastic! I stayed for two days while passing through Qingdao, and the location was excellent. Downstairs is Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street, and there are several other pedestrian streets nearby, perfect for a city walk, eating, and shopping. It's very convenient for dining and shopping. Turn left out of the hotel, and you're at the subway station, making transportation very easy. During our two-day stay, we visited the nearby Beer Museum, Zhanqiao Pier, Xiaoyushan Park, and Taidong Pedestrian Street, all of which were very close. The front desk service was warm and attentive, and the overall check-in experience was great. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Qingdao!

Facilities: The old facilities aren't smart and feel a bit dated compared to the Atour Hotel in Lianyungang! Environment: Generally good. Service: Decent! Probably because there were so many tourists in the scenic area, we arrived at the hotel close to 2 PM with two large suitcases, but no one came to greet us or help with the luggage! The most unpleasant part was that even though we arrived close to 2 PM, we were told we couldn't check in yet because the room was still being cleaned and check-in was at 4 PM! This is something I've never encountered before; normally, you can check in after 12 PM, and definitely by around 2 PM. With so many tourists in the scenic area, the price was several times higher than a normal Atour, but the service didn't keep up. The price didn't quite match the facilities and service. It's a five-minute walk to the beach and a ten-minute walk to the pier, but the experience was mediocre because it was so crowded with people everywhere! I didn't see the famous seagulls or the beautiful scenery at the pier. Luckily, we took a boat trip to see the real ocean view, otherwise, I would have felt like I came for nothing! Late-night porridge service: Didn't try.

My daughter and I booked this windowless room because we had an early high-speed train the next morning, so we chose a hotel close to the station. The environment was great. A short while after we went up to the room, the front desk called to check if we were satisfied and informed us that the water and tea bags were complimentary. The subway station is right downstairs, so the location is excellent and very convenient. Just a short walk away, you can see the pier with a bathing beach underneath.

The hotel's location is excellent, making it very convenient for getting around. It's easy to hail a taxi or take the subway. The bustling pedestrian street is just a few minutes' walk away, perfect for grabbing food or shopping. The front desk service is also very efficient; they promptly addressed any issues we had. Overall, a great experience.

This hotel boasts an excellent location, just a few minutes' walk from Zhongshan Road subway station, making it super convenient to reach attractions like Zhanqiao Pier and the churches. You can even see Signal Hill from the hotel window. There are also many authentic local eateries hidden nearby, including Haiping Wonton and Pichaiyuan Pot Stickers, all within walking distance. It's also very close to Jimo Road if you want to check out the pearls. The hotel has robots that can deliver takeaways right to your door. There's a dedicated elevator. Check-in at the front desk was efficient, and I was given a key card to activate the power in the room.

Facilities: Well-equipped and tidy. Cleanliness: Very clean. Environment: The sea view room indeed offers fantastic ocean views, which is why we booked this hotel. The view is completely unobstructed, and the surrounding transportation is very convenient. Service: Housekeeping was prompt, and the front desk staff (小姐姐 - 'little sister' often used endearingly for young women) provided excellent service. We even got orange candies when checking out! Satisfied!
