Great
KKay-aLocation to public transport and local attractions was convenient. The accommodation was comfortable but it would have been better if there was a floor plan where the rooms are located as only 3 rooms were on the main floor and the others were accessible via stairs, which are narrow. Our room was outside the main house in the back. If you are travelling with lots of luggage or big, heavy suitcases, be mindful that there are no lifts. Housekeeping was a bit disappointing. Modern fittings and energy saving features were a plus.
GGuest UserThe hotel is in need of a complete refurbishment.
There is peeling window frames and wallpaper and the lifts don't work - not for the old and infirm.
The room we were given was on the second floor and we were told it was overlooking the Castle which we couldn't see through dirty windows.
Its a shame really as the hotel is very much part of Cardiff's history but you get the impression that the owners are just making-do presumably because the cost of bringing the hotel up to date will cost millions - sorry won't be back
GGuest UserLast minute decision to stay over in Cardiff and this is in an ideal location and reasonable price. Staff at reception/bar couldn't have been more helpful when I struggled with the check in units! Room was fine, quiet & with everything I needed. Sunday night but restaurant was still open so had lovely meal there & breakfast the next morning always a cracker. Note their deal if you're having both by the way.
AA.nedovolnayaI really liked the hotel! The complimentary breakfasts were wonderful. Right by the hotel, there's a pond with ducks, koi, and swans with their little ones. You can even buy food for them at the hotel for a symbolic 50 pence. The room was neat and pleasant, and it even had an iron and ironing board.
GGuest UserI really enjoyed my stay overall. The location was fantastic—on a beautiful street—and the hotel building itself is stunning. When I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by a very kind Italian gentleman, which gave me a great first impression. My room, though located in a separate area, was clean, modern, and nicely decorated. Everything looked fresh and well thought out.
However, I was disappointed to find visible stains on the bed sheets. While I believe they had been washed, the stains hadn’t come out and the sheets were still used, which didn’t match the high standard the rest of the hotel presented. I think they should have replaced them.
Another minor inconvenience was the bathroom light, which was automatic and triggered the extractor fan. This meant that even during the night, using the bathroom caused the noisy fan to stay on for a while, which could’ve been avoided with a manual light switch, in my opinion.
Despite these issues, the stay was mostly very positive, but I can’t give a full five stars because of the sheets. Hopefully this can be improved for future guests.
GGuest UserI’m so glad we decided to stay at The Coal Exchange Hotel in Cardiff. I’d been given the very important job of finding a place to stay overnight for my friend’s special birthday. I didn’t really know where to start, so I compared prices of hotels in the area. I was surprised to find that the ‘budget’ hotels Premier Inn and Travelodge were no cheaper than The Coal Exchange for the given dates! I had a look at the photos and reviews and it looked perfect for a special occasion. It was steeped in history with the interior design staying true to the period in which it was built. Originally, as there were five of us, I had booked the sextuplet room. It looked amazing and we were all really excited about staying there. Unfortunately though, due to maintenance work being carried out on that part of the building, we had to change our plans to three double rooms right next to each other. The rooms were beautiful. Floor to ceiling double windows, opulent wallpaper, ornate period furniture and a lovely comfortable centrepiece bed.
The bathrooms had gorgeous jacuzzi baths and stone basins.
The following morning we had a delicious breakfast in Culley’s Restaurant situated inside the Coal Exchange.
The staff here are very friendly and go out of their way to ensure you have the best stay.
Can’t wait to go back.
GGuest UserLocated in the middle of the city centre close to castle and local attractions. Unfortunately room backed into a night club which played music till 4am. If you are a light sleeper this could be an issue. Other then that lovely place.
BBethSaidSmileIt is a good hotel, good size swimming pool & have both steam room and sauna, however, been twice now on weekdays and both times very busy.
Mainly self check-ins which loses the personal touch I feel and not too happy charged extra for parking giving the location of the hotel.
Great service in the restaurant.
GGriffithsLeighClose to the Cardiff Bay area and a very short bus to the main city and Cardiff Castle. Breakfast was excellent (but no muesli). Rooms spacious but no fridge (I think that the UK don't do fridges) we did enjoy our stay and would fully recommend staying here. Car park is next door at a multi carpark which is subsidised by the hotel @ 25 - 30%.
AAnonymous UserNice and spacious. Check in and out were very simple and easy. I love everything about it. Very close to city center and within walking distance. Worth every penny spent on it. Would recommend it to anyone
