FAN EXPO Toronto

As Canada’s largest pop culture convention and North America’s third-biggest fan event, FAN EXPO Toronto is a staple of Canadian fandom. Having attended conventions nationwide, I can confirm this annual gathering stands far above local niche shows. It covers comics, TV, film, anime, gaming, cosplay and celebrity culture, catering to all fans — hardcore collectors, gamers, casual attendees and families alike. Its all-genre, inclusive vibe makes it an unmissable pop culture highlight each year.

History and Evolution of FAN EXPO Toronto

FAN EXPO Canada

FAN EXPO Toronto has grown exponentially over three decades, evolving from a tiny local comic gathering into Canada’s premier pop culture festival. First launched in 1995 as a single-day comic-only event attracting 1,500 fans, it now draws over 130,000 annual attendees globally.

Core Development Milestones

  • Scale Expansion: Upgraded from a small single-day show to a massive four-day city-wide convention.
  • Content Diversification: Expanded its core focus beyond comics to cover anime, video games, sci-fi, horror, and celebrity fan experiences.
  • Venue Stabilization: Permanently settled at the downtown Metro Toronto Convention Centre, its iconic long-term home.
  • Legacy Continuation: Following its 30th anniversary celebration in 2026, FAN EXPO Toronto 2027 carries on its legacy as Canada’s most influential and highly anticipated pop culture event.

FAN EXPO Toronto Event Date, Venue & Opening Hours

Metro Toronto Convention Centre

FAN EXPO Toronto 2027 official dates: The event will be held from August 26 to August 29, 2027. It is always arranged on the last weekend of August for this four-day pop culture celebration.

Venue Information

The event’s permanent home is the iconic Metro Toronto Convention Centre, located in downtown Toronto. The full official address is 255 Front St W, Toronto, ON M5V 2W6, Canada.

For first-time visitors, the venue is split into North and South Buildings connected by indoor walkways, with clear zone divisions:

  • South Building: Hosts main exhibitions, celebrity stages, photo op areas, and all gaming zones.
  • North Building: Houses panel rooms, the official artist alley, and various special on-site events.

Top tip for new attendees: Check the official floor map in advance. The venue is very large, with 750,000 square feet. It is easy to get lost if you do not prepare ahead of time.

Daily Operating Hours

The opening time is different every day to control crowd flow and arrange evening activities. The basic weekend rule is as follows:

  • Thursday (Preview Day): Opens late and closes early (ideal for avoiding peak crowds).
  • Friday: Has longer opening hours from daytime to night. Most celebrity panels are held on this day.
  • Saturday (Peak Day): Has the longest opening hours in the whole weekend. It has the most competitions and star activities, making it the busiest day.
  • Sunday (Closing Day): Closes early, suitable for casual visiting and last-minute shopping.

Exact hourly times are updated annually on the official FAN EXPO HQ website a few months before the event, so always double-check the latest schedule before your visit.

FAN EXPO Toronto Celebrity Guests & Meeting Guide

FAN EXPO Toronto Celebrity Guests & Meeting Guide

One of the biggest draws of FAN EXPO Toronto is its stacked guest lineup — far more diverse than any other Canadian convention. Each year, the event invites a curated roster of film/TV actors, voice actors, comic artists, fantasy and sci-fi authors, gaming creators, and pop culture athletes.

Guest announcements roll out in waves starting spring each year, with major headliners revealed first, followed by supporting talent, indie creators, and local fan favourites. Past iconic guests include Stan Lee, Patrick Stewart, Elijah Wood, and Gillian Anderson. The FAN EXPO Toronto 2027 guest lineup will feature brand-new celebrity talent across film, TV, anime, gaming, and horror, with official announcements dropping in the months leading up to the August event.

Photo & Autograph Practical Guide

Here is some simple and useful information to meet your favourite stars smoothly:

  • Booking & Purchasing: All photo and autograph tickets must be bought online on the official website in advance. Popular stars’ tickets sell out very fast, so you must book early.
  • Pricing: Costs vary by guest tiers. Top Hollywood stars have higher pricing, while voice actors, indie creators, and local talent are more budget-friendly. Autograph tickets are usually less expensive than photo op tickets.

Day-of Tips: Please arrive at the designated area 15 to 20 minutes early to avoid missing your appointment. You can bring your own comics or collectibles for signatures. Remember to save your ticket barcode for quick scanning. Please follow the time strictly, as the sessions will not wait for late visitors.

Money-Saving Ticket Tips

These simple methods can help you save money on tickets without missing any fun:

  • Early Bird Release Window for 2027: FAN EXPO Toronto 2027 early bird tickets will likely start to sale in mid-to-late October 2026, roughly 10 months before the August event. Based on official ticketing patterns from 2025 and 2026 editions, the discounted early bird window lasts only 3–4 weeks and offers the lowest possible pricing for single-day and weekend passes. No official 2027 exact date has been announced yet, but launches consistently land in October each year. These limited-time deals deliver the steepest discounts of the entire ticketing cycle and sell out quickly.
  • Take advantage of group rate discounts for groups of 4+ people, perfect for friend or family fandom trips
  • Opt for single-day passes instead of multi-day tickets if you only plan to attend peak Saturday events
  • Avoid last-minute on-site purchases, which are always priced at full premium rates

FAN EXPO Toronto Transportation & Accommodation Tips

FAN EXPO Toronto Transportation & Accommodation Tips

The Metro Toronto Convention Centre is centrally located in downtown Toronto, making it incredibly easy to reach no matter how you travel — here are all your best options:

  • Public Transit: Get off at Union Station by subway. It only takes 5 minutes to walk to the venue. There are also streetcars and buses stopping near Front Street West. It is the cheapest and fastest way for local people.
  • Driving & Parking: There are many parking garages around the venue. Some have convention discounts on weekends. But you need to arrive early, because parking spaces fill up fast on Saturday.
  • Ride-Share & Taxis: Uber and Lyft have special drop-off and pick-up points outside the South Building, which is very convenient.
  • Walking: If you live in downtown areas like Chinatown, King West or Harbourfront, you can walk to the venue directly.

Airport Travel Guide

If you come to Toronto from other cities or countries, you can choose from two main airports. Both have their own advantages:

Airport Code & Name

Best For

Transportation & Travel Time

YYZ – Toronto Pearson International Airport

Suitable for international flights and long-distance domestic flights.

Take the UP Express train to Union Station. It takes about 25 minutes to reach the convention venue.

YTZ – Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport

Suitable for short-distance domestic flights from Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary and other Canadian cities.

It is very close to downtown. You only need a 10-minute ferry or taxi ride to get to the venue area.

Hotel & Accommodation Tips

Since the convention weekend is extremely busy, booking accommodation early is critical. I always use Trip.com to compare rates, lock in flexible bookings, and find the best deals on downtown Toronto hotels — it’s my go-to platform for convention travel planning.

  • Premium Downtown Options: High-end and mid-range hotels near the venue, in which you can walk to the convention directly, saving a lot of time.
  • Budget-Friendly Stays: Cheap boutique hotels and Airbnbs in nearby communities like Cabbagetown and Riverdale, where you can take public transit to the venue easily.

Money-Saving Accommodation Tips: Book your hotel 2 to 3 months in advance to avoid price surges during the event. You can choose communities a little far from the downtown core to save money. It is better to choose rooms with free cancellation. Staying until Sunday night is also cheaper than checking out on Saturday.

The location in Toronto's Financial District is impeccable. Breakfast is à la carte and costs extra. The room was a bit small, and although bath salts were provided for the tub, I didn't use them. I happened to be there during TIFF, so the lobby was a bit chaotic.

Still quite satisfied, lived well, lived for 10 days, the surrounding area was also visited, the restaurant also ate a few times. The spa is also reflected, the overall is not bad. The exterior is being built, the sound is always bad during the day, and there is a fire truck, you can hear a lot of times a day. Toiletries are not provided daily, they need to be explained, and the service attitude is OK. At least the brand is there. I hope I can have a better stay experience next time.

When staying at the hotel, the front desk informed that all non-alcoholic beverages in the mini-bar are free because they have been prepaid. After that, bring some desserts. Someone knocked on the door at night, asking if a turndown service was needed. Before leaving, I was told that there are additional charges: facility charge $12, Neighbourhood Mktg $4.89. This is required upon check-in.

We had an amazing experience at the Soho hotel. The room was impeccable with a spacious closet area and huge bathroom. The room offered all the amenities. And the turn down service every evening was a nice touch. The location was great as well. Many food establishments nearby and it was close to everywhere we planned on going. We would definitely stay here again.

The location is super convenient, right in the city center. It's about a ten-minute walk to the lake, the train station, or the biggest shopping mall. The room is a decent size, a suite with a separate bedroom and living area, but it's a bit dated. Also, the bathroom doesn't have an exhaust fan.

The front desk staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, which immediately made us feel at ease. During the Christmas period, the hotel even offered complimentary hot chocolate and churros, which was such a lovely festive touch and really added to the atmosphere. The facilities were excellent. There is a 24-hour gym, which is very convenient, and the swimming pool stays open until 10pm or 11pm depending on the day. Towels are also provided at the pool, so you do not need to bring your own, which is always appreciated. Overall, the staff were warm and attentive, and the hotel had a genuinely welcoming and festive atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The hotel front desk staff were very welcoming and the location is excellent – close to the train station, TV tower, and aquarium. My only complaint is that I booked in advance, and on the day of my stay, the room was actually 1400 cheaper than what I paid. That was quite annoying.

The hotel is in the city center and the location is great. The front desk service was also excellent. The room was quite spacious. I stayed Friday night and checked out Saturday. Early Saturday morning, the fire alarm went off repeatedly. It scared me, and I wasn't sure what was happening, so I quickly grabbed my passport and wallet and went downstairs. Later, I found out it was just a drill. So early in the morning... I was really quite speechless.

The hotel breakfast is served from 6:30 AM to 11:00 AM and costs $15 per person, but the selection is just average. The room is spacious but a bit dated and has a small balcony. The pool also seems popular with many people swimming.

FAN EXPO Toronto Cosplay Rules & On-Site Survival Tips

FAN EXPO Toronto Cosplay Rules & On-Site Survival Tips

Cosplay is the heart of FAN EXPO Toronto’s community vibe, and whether you’re a first-time cosplayer or a seasoned veteran, these tips will elevate your experience.

  • Costume Planning: Prioritize comfort for long walking days — Toronto’s August weather can be warm, so avoid overly heavy costumes without ventilation. Plan your look weeks in advance to avoid last-minute fixes.
  • Official Cosplay Competition: The weekend’s flagship contest is open to all skill levels, with categories for beginners, intermediate, and advanced creators. Prizes include cash rewards, convention badges for future years, and feature spots on official FAN EXPO social media.
  • Prop Rules & Etiquette: All props must follow official convention safety policies — no sharp metal blades, functional weapons, or oversized restricted items. Always ask for permission before taking photos of fellow cosplayers, and respect personal space on the convention floor.

Practical Visiting Tips

Here are some insider tips to help you maximize every moment of the weekend:

  • Make a simple plan in advance, mark the panels and shops you want to visit most.
  • Arrive 30 minutes early, especially on Saturday, to avoid huge crowds.
  • Do not carry too many things. Heavy bags will affect your visiting experience.
  • Take breaks from time to time. The venue is super big, and you will feel tired easily.
  • Limited exclusive merchandise sell out fast, so buy your favorite items early.

Packing Checklist

This simple packing list fits all attendees, including cosplayers:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (you will walk for a whole day)
  • Portable phone charger (taking many photos will run out of power quickly)
  • Water bottle and small snacks (keep hydrated and save money on food)
  • Sunscreen and hat for outdoor walking
  • Electronic or printed tickets, ID card and small cash
  • Simple cosplay repair tools like safety pins and tape

Dining & Extended Travel Around FAN EXPO Toronto

Dining & Extended Travel Around FAN EXPO Toronto

There are many dining choices inside and near the venue for different budgets:

  • On-Site Vendors: The venue has food courts and snack stalls selling coffee, sandwiches and fast food for quick meals.
  • Nearby Quick Options: There are many casual restaurants, cafes and food trucks on Front Street West and Harbourfront for simple lunches.
  • Post-Con Sit-Down Restaurants: The King West area has many good restaurants, suitable for dinner with friends after visiting the convention.

City Attractions for Extended Trip

If you travel to Toronto from other places, you can stay a few more days to visit local scenic spots after the convention. I recommend CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium, Harbourfront Centre, St. Lawrence Market and Distillery District. All of them are only 10 to 15 minutes away from the venue.

Final Thoughts

With more than 30 years of history, FAN EXPO Toronto is still the largest and most diverse pop culture convention in Canada. It gathers fans who love celebrities, cosplay, games, peripheral goods and comics. No other local fan event can match its scale and experience. This simple guide can help new and returning visitors plan a smooth and unforgettable convention trip.
