Breakfast buffet is average but Dosa and other south Indian dishes were good. Outside sitting area adjacent to restaurant was covered with a net with bird droppings This property seriously need maintenance and renovation. "

"The best thing about this resort is its location. Right on the cliff adjacent to the sea.. just a few steps to the beach. A small pool which is good for kids and people who don't know how to swim. The rooms are not worth the price. Service is not good. The room doesn't even have a phone to contact the reception. They gave a mobile number.. mostly no one picks the call.. The breakfast is just average.. any two dishes and curry, bread butter jam, cornflakes, boiled egg, tea coffee.. that's it.. for which sometimes you have to wait for a long time.."

"Fantastic hotel and staff, I want to mention: Praveen, the general manager, made the time to come and speak to us , very professional! Suralal, Adarsh and Deepu, the front office team, what can we say, these 3 were amazing, helpful, nothing was too much trouble...and kept in supply if many cups of coffee! Vishnu, Kavitha and Prashant, the housekeeping team, excellent service, room was spotless every day, and the towel art was fantastic, Lovely surprises! Sunil, the chef...it was like having our own private chef, the dishes he cooked for us were out of this world, the flavours were amazing something deliciously different every day! And thanks to Ambili and Kishnar Kutty, the kitchen team, their help with the dishes and the service they gave was impeccable. Thanks to Raju (day) and Mohan (night), the guards, very attentive and always a wave and a big smile. Finally Kilson and Anil, the maintenance team, always on hand to help with any problems. Thank you all, you should all be so proud of yourselves, the hotels reputation only has you all to thank."

Elixir Cliff Beach Resort and Spa
"Do not be fooled, this hotel is not at all like the web site pictures. The one star review is for the view and beach only. It is a very very run down and dirty hotel. The swimming pool should be closed because it's a health hazard, filthy dirty broken tiles all over the base, no ladder into the pool (just broken and left on the side. The restaurant area is like a dirty truckers cafe. Poor english, but not unfriendly, I felt a bit sorry for the staff, they have a horrible property to try and maintain, customers must be so upset all the time. We stayed the night because we couldn't arrange anything else but checked out the following morning. When I pointed out the issues with the property,they at least accepted my complaints and refunded the remainder of my stay. I now understand why they asked for full payment in advance! To be 100% fair and objective, the beach view and beach are very nice, although a horrible dirty passage down from the hotel to the beach. We ate a couple of things from the restaurant, which were reasonable. We had the junior suite, which was big and clean although a bit basic. There is nothing around the area and it also very run down. Sorry to say if this is the best Varkala has to offer then I recommend you strike it from your bucket list. "

"I booked the hotel online and they even took the payment online. I reached the place after a long tiring drive and reached to find out, they don't even allow us to wear our own slippers, and the bathroom was also so unclean and neither was there any bathroom slippers. This is the worst experience, no slippers even in the reception, and there is also no staff to take your luggage in a long and high stairs. This is the worst hotel ever. Never visit."

I have been a lot around the world, but such a nightmare I have not met anywhere, you can write a poem about this institution, room and bathroom in the state of the hut of the poorest Hindus, no water, no, clean plates, asked to give a knife-give a sweat , who carved coal, lay dirty rags everywhere, in the kitchen in servants instead of someone's pants , sari, shorts, an hour after the settlement found worm in his shoes that stood in the room, Then the lizards came, the morning when people were out of the room sitting right on the floor and eating their breakfast with their hands , they didn't have the devices... Thank God it was crazy to book for 2 nights, but we ran away as soon as the next morning came , for 2400 per night it was certainly cool, I think the cows have a better chlew than this hotel , 20 meters away they found a chic bungalow with a pool and an ocean exit with breakfast for 4,000 a day Make conclusions"

"I’ll start by saying that we only booked this guesthouse as it was pretty much the only one available for our dates in Varkala that seemed well located and wasn’t a hostel in a dorm room (we are a married couple in our 30s and are passed the days of sleeping in a dorm bunk bed!). BIG MISTAKE! Following 7 weeks of travel in India and staying in almost 20 different guesthouses and homestays, this was by far the worst! One of the most expensive out of all the properties we stayed in and by far the worst in terms of facilities, value for money and management. Where to begin… 1. Frequent power cuts on our first day turning the lights and AC off in the room 2. We stayed in two rooms (one AC and one fan). Almost none of the plug sockets worked in either room with the exception of one 3. The shower was practically pointless and the water came out in a tiny trickle in both rooms. Not very practical for showering. We used the bucket for showering (which we have done many times in India, but not expected here considering it cost 2-3x more than other properties we stayed at in India). It’s also a wet room (common in India), but no mop/brush to push all the excess water into the drain (we had this in majority of our other guesthouses) so you’re walking into a soaking wet bathroom every time you enter 4. The rooms didn’t feel 100% clean - we were walking on sand before we even went to the beach and even felt sand in the bed! 5. Speaking of the bed, this was rock hard and super uncomfortable 6. We shared our AC room with 4/5 geckos each night. We are ok with nature and insects so this wasn’t a huge deal for us but just FYI incase you are not. There are vents in the room that allow insects in easily, despite them having some sort of sellotape over them to try and prevent this 7. There was construction work happening (either the property itself or next door). When in the AC room we were woken up quite early each morning with loud banging and drilling practically outside our window. The workmen also left their tools on our balcony 8. We were interested in doing the cooking class offered but were told that this was not available because the owner Suresh was too busy at his other property in Varkala (it’s called Gypsy Walker so will assume is also poor quality). Just as well, wouldn’t have wanted to have given another penny to this property! 9. The property requests that shoes are taken off before entry and left on the designated shoe rack. Respectful of the property’s policies and Indian culture we did just that. On the last day, one of our pairs of shoes was stolen from the rack. We know this happened that day as they were there late morning when we went out but not the evening when we returned to get them. When we informed Suresh of the issue, he was incredibly rude, shouting abuse at us down the phone and accused us of lying to get compensation out of him - incredibly insulting to say the least. We were told that no one has access to the property"

"Fantastic location - just a short tuk tuk ride from the train station and a couple of minute walk ***** the cliff with stairs to the beach very close by. The guesthouse is tucked away down a cute alley and as you come out of it you are surrounded by bars and shops on either side with a gorgeous view out over the beach. We stayed in one of the bottom rooms, as we were told it was a little cooler, and found the temperature to be comfortable, especially with the decent fan. The room was clean with comfy pillows and free WiFi. Our host was lovely and welcoming. He spoke fantastic English so we chatted for a while. He was really helpful in letting us know where to eat and which ATM would provide the best rates, even offering to drive us there. On the day we left, we had a few hours before the train so he let us check out late for free and then leave our bags in his room so we didn't have to carry them around with us. A great stay in Varkala!"
