Shanghai Metro Map: Local Riding Guide

Shanghai Metro Map: Ride Like a Local

The Shanghai Metro is the most recommended travel tool for Canadian tourists — it is reliable, high-frequency, budget-friendly and covers almost all scenic spots across the city. The Shanghai rail network operates 21 lines and 523 stations with a total mileage of 906km, ranking among the world’s largest urban rail transit systems. Below are the most practical metro lines for foreign travelers:

  • Metro Line 1 (North-South Main Line): Connects core urban areas, passing People’s Square, Circus World and major shopping hubs
  • Metro Line 2 (East-West Traffic Artery): The most essential line for travelers, linking Hongqiao Airport, Pudong Airport and downtown Puxi & Pudong
  • Metro Line 4 (Circular Line): Ideal for visiting Lujiazui Financial District and connecting major transfer hubs
  • Metro Line 10 (Old Shanghai Cultural Line): Covers classic old Shanghai neighborhoods, including Yu Garden and Xintiandi
  • Metro Line 11 (Tourist Special Line): Offers direct non-stop access to Shanghai Disneyland Resort

Travel Tip for Canadian Tourists: The Shanghai metro network is extensive. Always check the latest metro map and line updates before boarding to avoid detours. Rush hours (7:30–9:00, 17:30–19:00 on workdays) are crowded, so arrange your travel time reasonably.

I had absolutely no trouble getting my ticket by following the instructions on the app!! Since it was July, it was very hot outside even though it was dark, but it was great that the air conditioning on the first floor worked well. I went up to the third floor to take photos whenever I wanted, and came back down to sit and enjoy the night view when it got too hot. You can see everything outside through the glass windows even from the first floor, so it is great for enjoying the night scenery~~

I really enjoyed it! Although you have to stand for 45 minutes. I went during the 6:50 p.m. session—it was perfect. There weren't many people yet, but the lights were already on. I highly recommend it!

Although the weather was unpredictable due to the passing typhoon, enjoying the night view from the ferry was extremely comfortable. The area around the Bund is very crowded, so being able to comfortably enjoy the scenery from a boat instead of walking is a great advantage. However, you have to stand for about an hour to admire the view. Therefore, if you want to sit at the bow for a more leisurely view, you must pay an additional 100 yuan (approximately 20,000 KRW). You can choose between ice cream or beer, and enjoy simple snacks while the drinks are lukewarm. I recommend this to anyone who does not want to walk along the Bund, squeezing in among crowds to find the perfect moment to take a photo.

A fantastic exhibition by the Shanghai Museum, showcasing the largest exhibition of artefacts ever lent by the Mexican government, outside of Mexico. Engrossing immersive and beautifully exhibited, I enjoyed this much more than I thought that I would. If you are a foreigner, don’t forget to bring your passport to get into the museum!

Don't miss it! A true dialogue between cultures, where you can see on a timeline the relationship between the Olmec, Inca, Maya, and Aztec cultures and China. In addition to four floors of exhibits, you'll find interactive and virtual reality sessions. All in all, 3-4 hours of pure entertainment and learning, especially since most of the Peruvian pieces are leaving their country of origin for the first time.

I really enjoyed my visit to the Shanghai Museum. The special exhibition on American and Mesoamerican history was fascinating, informative, and very well curated. There was a great variety of artifacts on display, and each one was beautifully presented with clear explanations that made it easy to appreciate their historical and cultural significance. The exhibition offered a wonderful insight into the civilizations and cultures of the Americas, and I left feeling like I had learned something new. If you're interested in history, archaeology, or simply enjoy seeing beautiful historical objects, I would definitely recommend visiting this exhibition. It was an engaging and worthwhile experience.
