If this hotel were a bit more expensive, I wouldn't rate it with more than four points, but as the pricing is so reasonable for Swiss standards, I think the value for money merits another point. It *is* old - the building as well as the furnishings and appliances. I noticed that on the hairdryer in the bathroom, it said ”Made in W. Germany” - so before Germany's reunification, which makes that hairdryer more than 30 years old. But it worked well and was clean, and this is typical for the whole hotel: Everything is kept in good working order and I hadn't any issues with anything. Some furnishings are visibly worn, but never dirty. My room was well appointed. Particularly, I think i counted about seven power outlets (!) in the room alone (including multiple sockets), and additional ones (for the hairdryer and a shaver outlet) in the bathroom, so you will always have enough to charge your devices etc. The room rate included (continental) breakfast which was decent enough - including boiled eggs, muesli, various kinds of bread, a small selection of cheese, juices, and a good coffee machine. There is a room safe, though it is tiny - just large enough for a wallet, some keys or the like. I think the hotel could improve quite a bit if some small things which can't be very costly were replaced - such as installing larger room safes, or new shower heads (the shower was fine, hot and strong, but the shower head was a tiny plastic thing). If your room faces the railway station, there might be some noise, though the railway in fron of the hotel is not the main line with freight trains, just the small MGB local passenger trains (and Glacier Express) which aren't very noisy. As a railway fan, I even liked it to have bit (not very loud) of the announcements in the background, and it's quiet later in the night. I would definitely stay there again.

Guesthouse St. Ursula

Brig|0.35km from city centre
Lots of positive things have been said about this property and yes the rooms are spotless, the mountain views are fantastic, the breakfast is decent and the location is quiet yet close enough to the centre. Still, I think it's wrong to pretend that over 130 euros per night for a room with shared toilet and shared shower is an ”excellent price”. In countries like France, Germany and Italy you can get a fantastic business hotel with breakfast, large room and ... private bathroom for the same amount of money. Of course Switzerland has its own price level (certainly now that the Euro is even less favorable compared to the Franc), but I still find the contrast very large. In addition, sharing a bathroom and toilet can have some serious drawbacks: cyclists were present on our floor who behaved as if the entire floor were their domain. They kept their room door open all the time, leaving us unwillingly confronted with piles of dirty laundry. It goes without saying that Brig is a fantastically located place, surrounded by the breathtaking view of the Alps. However, there are some significant drawbacks compared to nearby Italian Domodossola: unlike this Italian city, Brig is almost completely deserted on Sundays and Mondays. Supermarkets, for example, are closed. Eating out can be done in Italy for about half the price as in Brig. In summary, this is definitely a good place to stay if: you don't mind sharing your bathroom and toilet with other guests, and if you're also willing to pay a decent amount of money for it. We enjoyed the beautiful nature and we certainly also enjoyed our trip to Thun and its lake.

Schlosshotel - Self Check-in Hotel
4.1/564 Reviews
We were taking the Glacier Express from Chur to Zermatt but the hotels in Zermatt were very expensive so we looked into Brig to stay the night and visit in the day. This hotel was not only very charming and clean (a plus during the pandemic) it had good internet and cable service. The views were lovely and the overall atmosphere was great. We were greeted downstairs with a delicious breakfast that was local cheeses and meats along with breads, jams and butters, coffee from a Nescafé machine (which was surprisingly good) and some yogurt and overnight oats. The man at the front desk was possible the nicest person we met on our entire vacation and was very considerate in letting us leave out bags in the hotel while we left to Zermatt and came back to get them. Overall recommend this hotel for anyone that comes to it. The only downside to the hotel would be the walk from the station but as long as your willing to walk about 8 minutes through the nice town you’ll be greeted by an amazing hotel!

Hotel Stockalperhof

Stayed at Hotel Stockalperhof for 4 nights as part of the Classic Glacier Express Tour (Great Rail Journeys). The hotel is generally unmanned after you receive your key, with the exception of the breakfast service. Rooms across 5 floors with even numbered rooms benefiting from a small balcony that looks on to the mountains. Coffee (pod) machine provided but only 2 pods and after this you have to pay for your own (Coop is 100m away) so you end up eating and drinking out a lot of the time. The bathroom suffers from the shower head being positioned too low to be of any use, with a hose that is too short in many rooms. This does need looked at by the management. The hotel is very well positioned in Brig with a number of restaurants on the doorstep and only a 350m walk from the train station. I personally would return without a second thought; it is the shower that stops this being a '5' review.
