"We think this is the best cosiest pub in Castleton and always make it our main stop when visiting here. But today wasn't up to scratch. Despite being half empty on a Sunday the food took over an hour to arrive. The wife ordered the beef dinner and when it arrived it was pork but we didn't say anything as we didn't want to wait another hour. I ordered the "famous" pie which looked like it had been run over before being plated and resembled nothing more than slop! Both were completely dry and were described on the menu as coming with rich beef gravy. In fact I had to ask for some more gravy as the beef/pork dinner was so dry (and the pie) was so dry it was in danger of self combusting near a naked flame. Even the landlady said that does look dry as she brought out the extra small gravy jugs. Although in actual fact that's probably an exaggeration as the pub was so cold I had to put my scarf on while eating and everybody was sat with their winter coats on and woolly hats. Freezing!! Don't know what's happened here although I can only blame complacency. Next door at the Peak Hotel and at the Castle in Castleton centre are far better quality at the moment and that's a shame. Please take note. "

"Fantastic quirky pub we used to visit all the time in the camper van but unfortunately for some reason they stopped vans overnight on the car park , must be too busy for us , great shame as can't afford the local campsites "

"Our meal was very disappointing. Beware of the large raw pickled onions in the stew. They leave a bath of pickling vinegar in your bowl. Also if the bread as described on the menu is unavailable please inform the guest prior to ordering!"
