Monbellis ★★★
Toucanet Lodge ★★
"My wife and I own a small birding tour company called Epic Nature Tours. We have brought several tours to El Toucanet Lodge in the last few years and every stay has been fantastic. They have an incredible variety of hummingbirds coming to their feeders (we saw 9 species at the feeders on theost recent trip) as well as spotted wood-quail calling every morning around the lodge and lots of song birds in the trees. A drive up the road gave us close to 70 species of birds, and a Quetzal tour in the Copey Valley is just you and the guide and the Quetzals, not the hundred + bird enthusiasts clogging the road for a look at a Quetzal in San Gerardo de Dota. The food is also amazing!"
Trogon Lodge ★★★
"Great food, views and staff. 100% recommend. Comfortable room with double beds."
Dantica Cloud Forest Lodge ★★★
"The room was clean, the breakfast was good and the service was good. The hotel's own protection area is very large, and the forest trail is very good. There are many gardens and nearby road birds near the hotel reception desk, and the environment is good. The only downside is that the room is far from the hotel reception desk and the restaurant, and it is not convenient for bad legs."
Hotel de Montaña Suria ★★★
"I could not wait to leave. Rooms cold, dark, sparse. No TV, no Internet. Internet only in reception and restaurant. Lighting in bathroom almost non-existent. On arrival, the room smelled of sewage. Flies and Mosquitoes flying around in the bathroom, as the vented windows would not close. Asked to be moved but the hotel was full, so they came and forced the window shut and put something over the broken pane. I killed the Mosquitoes and flies. Went to dinner and had trout, which was lovely, but unfortunately, the potato wedges were almost raw and inedible. We ordered drinks and sat by the log fire, as by now it was pretty cold as this place is high in the mountains and cloud forest. We tried to get further drinks, but we were told that the bar shut at 8 30pm! As the staff tidied up around us, we realised that they wanted us out. So back to the very cold room, with one ridiculously small electric fan heater. On the bed was a six legged insect the size of a walnut and a spider. The room was very dusty. We slept badly. The shower next morning was dangerous. Cold one minute, then boiling hot the next. The room and bathroom were cold. Breakfast was very basic, the toast tasted weird, like it had been on an oily hotplate. Only eggs and beans and rice as other choices. The breakfast room was cold. The fruit was nice. The gardens are beautiful. However, this is not an experience I would ever wish to repeat. I've had more comfortable holidays in a tent. The area is beautiful, but I would recommend finding a better hotel."
Paraíso Quetzal Lodge ★★★
"After trying on our own for 4 days with no success, we booked a last minute quetzal tour with Jorge, and we had a great time. We had been trekking up and down trails on our own and Jorge made it so much easier for us. We drove to a couple spots and hiked only a short distance which was much appreciated. I knew that he would be able to locate the quetzal and we were able to see four males and one female. My goal was to see a male flying through the trees, and we did! He told us about his family’s role in conservation in the area. Highly recommend this tour. The lodge has an amazing hummingbird porch and a nice restaurant with a big fireplace. We felt very much at home and wished we had booked an overnight stay!"
Cedrela Eco-Lodge & Restaurante ★★
"All the reviews of this lodge are accurate. It is a special place with special views. We were here for one night during the rainy season. There was a fire laid in the chimney which would have been welcome at night when it was cool but the hotel was unable to provide matches! There was an empty box by the fireplace… A few quibbles: Be aware the access road is in terrible condition and the alternative route is only practicable in a 4x4 There is limited hot water. What there is in the shower is serviced by a mini electric heater with exposed wiring that would not pass muster in the US or EU. There were no bedside or reading lights in our cabin The tin roofs resound with falling rain drops. All i can say is i could not sleep because it sounded as if someone was tapping the roof all night The lodge is a shade more expensive than most. The restaurant is trily outstanding indeed we had trout in an orange sauce which was Michelin* quality but the price of a meal without wine was £60 or $75 per head which is London prices or more."
Savegre Hotel Natural Reserve & Spa ★★★
"Superb hotel ideally located in the middle of the San Gerardo de Dota Valley and still managed by the descendants of the pioneers who "discovered" the valley in the 1950s. We chose this hotel for its proximity to Los Quetzales National Park. Finally, we stayed in the superb San Gerardo de Dota Valley which is home to quetzals all year round thanks to the presence of Guatemalan avocado trees - whose fruits they feed on. The hotel grounds include a garden designed for the many hummingbirds, various hiking trails, some of which are particularly popular with ornithologists, as well as a viewpoint offering a superb panorama of the valley. We went on a quetzal observation outing (among others) with Raul Fernandez Chacon (Whatsapp +***********), grandson of the pioneers who settled in the valley; to be booked directly or through the hotel. Spa equipped with jacuzzis and an impeccable sauna and restaurant."
Curuba Lodge ★★★★
"Fantastic place, don’t hesitate, just book it. You’ll have zero regrets. Great atmosphere, food, trails, flowers, the cabins, all of it. Definitely going back."
