Varis House

Varis House ★★

📍 26 Church Rd, Lerwick

"The hotel is in a great location. Just walk across the street after getting off the airport bus. I stayed on the top floor, a bit like a loft. It wasn't particularly comfortable, but the view was great, including the main road traffic. Although it was still under 10°C outside in late May, the landlord gave me an electric heater, which was very cozy. The bathroom also had a skylight, which you could open for some fresh air. The room amenities were average, with few toiletries. Tea and coffee were available at the restaurant downstairs. The breakfast wasn't particularly suited to Chinese palates; it was a buffet. I only had two slices of bread, a banana, and a bag of cereal. The hotel is a five-minute walk from the town center, but the only Tesco supermarket there is a bit more challenging, taking 20 minutes in the wind and rain."

Glen Orchy House ★★

📍 20 Knab Rd, Lerwick

"Appalling. Dirty, bed linen awful, beds awful, bathroom antiquated, no room service when requested. Surly unhelpful staff. Room too hot. A terrible experience"

Queens Hotel

Queens Hotel ★★★

📍 24 Commercial St, Lerwick

"I had a short stay in the queens in lerwick. I honestly couldn't get better customer service. To name drop. Sam. Absolute star, all that I could ask for, recommendations on local pubs, food and locations. Couldn't have more positive compliments for this man. Top notch. So friendly and welcoming, as soon as I arrived he was passing the hallway and suddenly stopped and welcomed me in."

The Lerwick Hotel ★★★

📍 15 South Rd, Lerwick

"Took my Girlfriend for a meal recently, and was allocated an 8.30pm slot despite the place being fairly deserted when we arrived early at 8.10pm on the off chance they’d take us early which they did. Upon ordering drinks & our food as we were just finishing our starter (about 8.50pm) my mobile starts ringing, who’s phoning me in the middle of my date you ask? Yes it’s the Lerwick Hotel, asking why I haven’t turned up for my 8.30 booking, and this is me sitting in their dining room! The incompetence is staggering and ruined the whole vibe of our date. Needless to say a half hearted apology and some waffle about a table booked for someone else didn’t cut mustard, and we never even got as much as a complimentary drink for the embarrassment as I told the server that I was just that. The food was ok, nothing tremendous I might add, but would I go back, not sure I would. Also to end things off the lad taking our payment couldn’t work out the half of £64.50, I rest my case…generally very disappointing experience."

Fort Charlotte Guest House

Fort Charlotte Guest House ★★★

📍 1 Charlotte Street, Lerwick

"Excellent Guesthouse. Very clean, tidy & comfortable. Ryan is very knowledgeable and a great source of local information. The breakfasts are fabulous and prepared to your request (crispy bacon!). The kitchen area is in full view of the breakfast room and it was spotless! Perfect. There's a good selection of breakfast options to choose from. Ryan and Anita's team: Linda (mum), Kelly and Madison are lovely and really happy & helpful. The cosy ambience of the breakfast room for us fostered lots of chitchat with the other guests and we learnt of other things to go and do. Our room was well kept, nicely recently decorated and clean shower room. Good supply of towels and shampoo, shower gel, conditioner. Well stocked coffee and tea tray plus fresh milk everyday in the mini fridge. Bedding was all clean and fresh. Carpets spotless! Location is everything. The guesthouse is in Lerwick with good restaurants close by (literally a few minutes walk away). Use Ryan's recommended ones. The Guesthouse is a stones throw from the Brassay ferry and the birdwatching boats (highly recommend Phil Harris' 2.5 hour excursion). There's a lovely elevated patio area at the back of the guesthouse and one evening we bought a bottle of wine from a local shop and sat there and had a very good haddock & chips bought from the local chippy a mere 50m away. A great way to finish our stay! PS Lerwick is very quiet, so no late night noise. Also car parking is very close by."

The Shetland Hotel
7.6 (50 reviews)

The Shetland Hotel ★★★

📍 Holmsgarth Rd, ZE1, Lerwick

"Location environment service is very good, nothing to say! The interior style is relatively old, but the sanitary condition is very good and the stay is very comfortable. The hotel's breakfast is very rich and delicious, and dinner is very convenient. Outside the window is the sea and the island opposite. The other side of the hotel is a hiking area. It is also very convenient to visit museums and shopping."

Eddlewood Guest House ★★★
"We stayed here for 6 nights and had a very decent sized room on the top floor which gave us terrific views. The guesthouse is perfectly placed in Lerwick, easy walk to everywhere in town and close to the main road both North and South. The bathroom was large with a bath over the shower and room could be serviced every day if you required it. There was also a washing machine and dryer for guest use. A full Scottish breakfast was available every day if you desired it but there was also yoghurt fruit cereal etc. There is no designated parking, just what is available on the street. We never had an issue accessing parking. The owner is relatively new to the business I think and he is a very nice, friendly chap. Rooms could do with a little bit of updating and dusting but overall a very happy and comfortable week for us."

"Well below what is advertised. And not in line with what we had on this trip to Orkney, Shetland and No. 500. Old or even dilapidated accommodation. Average cleanliness. Rough welcome by the owner. 2 positive points: well located near the center and good breakfast with the person in charge very kind. To be avoided."

Queens Hotel ★★★
"I came here before mobile phones, before Amazon, before internet. I fell in love with this hotel and Shetland. Jutting out into a cold sea with waves crashing on the walls it was the most exciting place in the world. We turned on the hairdryers and trouser press to keep warm..we had porridge with double cream for breakfast followed by a whisky Mac or two to keep us warm we danced and sang .. I was 27 years old and fell in love with all of it. Shetland is a magical place, the hotel is what it is, see the beauty of it if you go, authenticity is hard to find. I’m 60 now and still looking for the wonderful unspoilt places."

The Lerwick Hotel ★★★
"Mixed feelings about this review as some issues were excellent others not so. Firstly it's hard not to escape cost of hotel accommodation in Lerwick & it's right to expect high standards. I arrived at the hotel off the morning Northlink Ferry which after a 25/30 minute walk meant I arrived well before check in time. Fully expected my bag to be stored, however receptionist couldn't have been more helpful & informed me my room was ready which I really appreciated. Location of the hotel just off South Road was ideal for my purposes with a large supermarket barely 10mins walk, close to a well defined coastal walk round The Knab or a 15-20 mins walk to Lerwick Harbour/Port. View at the back of the hotel is stunning. My room seemed a little dated with some of the furniture scratched & as I later discovered a very small bathroom with very weak shower. TV seemed to reboot itself every so often but otherwise ok Had an evening meal in the Bay Brasserie which was excellent. Quality of pate for starter & haddock for main course was very good. All in all excellent evening meal. Breakfasts in the hotel were decent & during my stay had cereals, hot food & kipper which to be honest was just ok. All the staff I met were friendly & helpful & overall enjoyed my stay but just expected more for the cost "
