King John's House

The Dog & Crook

The Dog & Crook

Test Valley District|3.5km from King John's House
We stayed for two nights. The bed was very comfortable and the ceiling fan was quiet and effective. The view from the window was a large field with cows. It was very quiet and lovely. The only toiletries were two tiny bottles of shower gel and a small amount of hand wash in a large bottle. We went down to breakfast the first day and were asked what we wanted - there were no menus or juice, cereals to help ourselves to. I asked what could we have and was told cereals and/or full English. My husband asked for orange juice and we said we would like coffee. Both arrived at the same time! The cooked breakfast eventually arrived some time after despite them wanting to know what time we wanted it. My husband's egg was overcooked as was our bacon. The mushrooms were oily and the large tomatoes hard. The sausage was nice and we were given nice warm toast. Unfortunately, they had no ketchup or marmalade either day - couldn't they have gone out and bought some? The next day my husband and two friends asked for cereal but were only given a small amount of milk in a gravy boat! I decided to just go for scrambled eggs and a sausage. When it arrived it was dry, tasteless and entirely unappetising. The toast that came with it wasn't buttered nor was my friend's, who had ordered poached eggs on toast. Her eggs were good though but when our husbands' full English arrived, they weren't given eggs at all and had to ask for them! We had an evening meal there which was not wonderful. Anchovies missing from the mixed meat starter and brown lettuce with my husband's steak. This place wasn't cheap. The evening meal was about 80 pounds and 10 each for breakfast. They were friendly people but need to get their act together if they want to survive. We certainly don't intend returning!

The White Horse Hotel, Romsey, Hampshire
4.4/5101 Reviews
We had a lovely room - how did they guess it was the one that had attracted me when I decided to book! Every aspect was comfortable, the food was excellent, and the staff were cheerful and nothing seemed to be too much trouble - even finding sourdough toast for my breakfast when I tentatively asked if it were possible. What impressed us most though was the cheerfulness of the staff and the fact that they all worked together seamlessly. The hotel itself was delightful, lots of different places to sit, and husband has just suggested I should say how good the cocktails were, as well as the high standard of all the meals. Wish I had asked for some names so that all the staff who looked after us so well could be thanked individually.
