Hong Kong Subway (MTR) Guide: Maps, Fares & Tips

By Bonnie
July 19, 2026

As a Canadian traveller, Hong Kong’s MTR is my top choice for city exploration. It is clean, reliable, and fully English-accessible with no Cantonese required. Covering all major tourist districts, it runs far more efficiently than Canadian transit. This guide simplifies MTR travel for hassle-free sightseeing.

Hong Kong Subway (MTR) Network Overview

Hong Kong’s MTR network includes 9 heavy rail core lines + dedicated Airport Express premium rail service (Light Rail is a separate suburban system, not included in main tourist heavy rail routes). The full network spans 271km with over 90 stations, covering Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and Lantau Island to connect downtown, suburban and resort areas for fast tourist travel.
The MTR map features a simple, fixed layout with unique line colours, English labels, bilingual station signage and clear interchange markers. Geographically intuitive for easy route checking, free physical maps are available at all stations, while the official MTR app offers digital route planning.
MTR Operating Hours: Is It 24-Hour?
The MTR is not 24-hour. Standard hours run approximately 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. daily, with minor line-specific variations. Major downtown last trains depart around 12:30 a.m.
After hours, travellers can take night buses, red taxis or green minibuses. Early first trains suit sunrise sightseeing and airport transfers.

HK Subway Ticketing Options: Best Choices for Canadian Tourists
After testing all MTR ticket options, I’ve sorted the most cost-effective, tourist-friendly choices for Canadian visitors by convenience and use case:
1. Octopus Card (Top Pick for Most Stays)
The Octopus Card is Hong Kong’s universal transit and payment card, highly recommended for stays over 2 days. It supports contactless payments everywhere and offers discounted MTR fares vs single-journey tokens.
- Cost & Details: Standard adult Octopus: HK$200 total (HK$50 fully refundable deposit + HK$150 pre-loaded stored value). Tourist Octopus: HK$39 (no deposit, refundable balance). Available at MTR stations, the airport, 7-Eleven and ferry terminals. Top-ups are widely accessible, with a HK$3000 maximum stored value.
- Beyond MTR Usage: It works on all local transit and at convenience stores, supermarkets, restaurants and vending machines.
- Key Benefit: Octopus saves HK$2–5 per trip, offering noticeable savings for frequent riders.

Includes HKD 50 Balance
Pick Up at Hong Kong Airport
2. MTR Tourist Day Pass
Perfect for busy 1–3 day trips with frequent rides. Fixed long-term pricing: 1-Day Pass (HK$75, 24-hour unlimited regular MTR rides); 3-Day Pass (HK$250 single Airport Express trip / HK$350 double trips).
- Limitations: Excludes Airport Express, East Rail first-class cabins and cross-border trips. Disneyland Resort Line is limited to round-trip use only.
3. Single-Journey Tokens
Single-journey tokens are one-way tickets sold via station machines. Fares are distance-based (HK$5–8 short, HK$8–12 mid, HK$12+ long trips). Only suitable for travellers taking fewer than 4 total rides, as they are the most expensive and inflexible option.
Quick Decision Guide for Canadians
- 1–2 busy days: 1-Day Tourist Pass
- 3+ days: Standard Octopus Card (best value)
- Short 1-day minimal travel: Single tokens

Step-by-Step HK MTR Guide for First-Time Foreign Riders

The MTR is extremely foreigner-friendly with full English support. Here is my simplified step-by-step riding routine:
- Entry: Follow English MTR entrance signs. Tap your Octopus or insert a token at fare gates for instant access.
- Waiting: Check overhead displays for train info. Queue behind the yellow line and let passengers exit before boarding.
- Riding: Peak-hour trains arrive every 2–4 minutes. Bilingual announcements and LED screens clearly display upcoming stops.
- Transfers: Follow clear English interchange signs for smooth line transfers at major hubs.
- Exit: Tap your card or insert your token to exit. Lettered station exits link directly to nearby attractions, check via the MTR app in advance.
Major Interchange Stations & Transfer Tips
Master these key interchange hubs to navigate major tourist routes effortlessly:
- Central/Admiralty: Busiest island interchange, serving five lines and offering the best transfer for Ocean Park and southside attractions.
- Kowloon Tong: Cross-platform transfer for East Rail and Kwun Tong Lines, linking Kowloon and the New Territories.
- Hung Hom: Major interchange for East Rail and Tuen Ma Lines for cross-district travel.
- Lai King: Fast cross-platform transfer for Tsuen Wan and Tung Chung Lines for Lantau trips.
Pro Tip: Follow coloured line signs in large stations to cut down transfer walking time significantly.

MTR vs. Other Hong Kong Transport Options

As a Canadian traveller, I’ve compared Hong Kong’s main transport modes to help you choose wisely for each scenario:
- MTR: Fast, reliable, weather-proof and budget-friendly for most urban sightseeing.
- Taxis: Great for late nights, group travel and door-to-door trips but more costly and prone to minor delays.
- Buses/Minibuses: Low-cost for suburbs but route signage is unfriendly for first-time tourists.
- Double-Decker Trams: Iconic heritage transport on Hong Kong Island. Low flat fare via Octopus, perfect for scenic casual rides.
- Ferries: Offers stunning cross-harbour views, though route coverage is limited.

Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|2.67km from city centre
This was my first hotel in Hong Kong, and I experienced Typhoon Signal No. 9 during my stay. The next day, I had to board a cruise, so I was quite worried about the transportation arrangements. The concierge team was outstanding—they proactively checked the latest travel information, kept me updated, and even escorted me to the cruise check-in point. Their professionalism, kindness, and exceptional service made me feel well taken care of during a stressful situation. I truly appreciate their support, and it was one of the most memorable parts of my stay. Highly recommended!FromMYR 550

## Facilities
1. As an established five-star hotel, I was pleased to find that the shower wasn't the kind where you have to stand in a bathtub, which I often encountered during previous stays in Hong Kong.
2. The bathroom has a direct drinking water tap, and the water tastes good, so I could easily refill my mineral water bottles.
3. There's a luggage rack in the room, which saves you from bending over to access your suitcase.
4. Hooks on both sides of the bathroom door are very convenient, and the toilet is a smart bidet model.
## Cleanliness
The room was spotless and tidy, very satisfied.
## Environment
1. The location is excellent, near the Tsim Sha Tsui East MTR Exit P2 and close to the Shangri-La Hotel. I feel this hotel offers better value for money. From my room, 719, I could look down and see the dining area on the 3rd floor, which was quite interesting and cleverly designed.
2. It's also close to the Hong Kong Museum of History, Hong Kong Science Museum, and Victoria Harbour.
## Service
The service was excellent. The doorman promptly opened the door, the front desk attendant spoke fluent Mandarin, the concierge was enthusiastic, and the ladies maintaining the restrooms in the 3rd-floor common area were all very kind.
## Overall
This was a very satisfying stay, without a single flaw. I will definitely choose The Royal Garden Hotel again on my next visit to Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong.FromMYR 610

Mong Kok's travel ceiling! Royal Plaza Hotel made my entire Hong Kong trip comfortable and healing.
I stayed at the Royal Plaza Hotel throughout my self-guided trip to Hong Kong, and the overall experience far exceeded my expectations. I simply must write a detailed review.
The room was cleaned daily by dedicated staff, with impeccable hygiene control. The entire room was spotless, clean, and comfortable. The butler service was highly responsive and efficient; when I needed cutlery, it was delivered to the room instantly, which was very thoughtful. Every evening, I like to relax with a bath. The bathtub was clean and odorless. After a tiring day of travel, a hot bath washed away all the fatigue. Downstairs, there's direct access to Mui Wah Bing Tang, offering authentic Hong Kong-style food readily available and delicious, making dining out extremely convenient.
What surprised me most was the location: the hotel is seamlessly connected to Grand Century Place, and Mong Kok East Station is right outside. Taking the MTR to major popular spots like Ocean Park, Disneyland, Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Causeway Bay was a breeze, with no need to worry about transportation. In Hong Kong, where space is at a premium, the rooms are spacious and wide, providing maximum comfort, suitable for both family trips and solo travelers.
Two small, heartwarming suggestions for the hotel's improvement:
Currently, the cutlery and bowls provided are a bit small. It was slightly inconvenient when I occasionally cooked Samyang Buldak noodles at night. If larger instant noodle bowls could be added, it would better cater to the needs of young guests. Also, if a stainless steel caddy could be installed on the bathtub, allowing for a glass of wine, aromatherapy, or a book while bathing, the ambiance and experience would be even better.
Overall, it's impeccable. Hardware, service, and location are all top-notch. I will prioritize choosing this hotel again for my next trip to Hong Kong. I sincerely recommend it to all visitors to Hong Kong!FromMYR 738

Wan Chai and Causeway Bay Hong Kong|4.81km from city centre
I stayed for three nights. On the first day, my flight was delayed by 4 hours, and I arrived at 4 AM. The front desk staff was on duty and processed my check-in quickly. The room had a direct drinking water tap, which was a nice touch. The room was also relatively spacious, and the windowsill had a soft padded cushion where you could sit or lie down. The bedding was a down comforter. Controls for lighting, air conditioning, and curtains were all push-button style, located on the bedside table, which was convenient. The location is excellent, just a few minutes' walk from Causeway Bay MTR Station Exit F1, very close to SOGO, and there are many dining options nearby. The hotel's Regal Palace restaurant is also outstanding.FromMYR 422

Whenever I'm in Sha Tin, I stay at ALVA HOTEL BY AKOYA. This time, I had a long-term stay, about a month.
**Facilities:** Relatively new, not as old as other hotels in the same price range.
**Environment:** For Hong Kong, the room is quite spacious, and the layout is comfortable.
**Hygiene:** Daily cleaning is prompt and thorough, and amenities are replaced frequently.
**Service:** The hotel management is strict, and overall it's pretty good. The female staff at the front desk are gentle and friendly, but some male staff can be arrogant and overbearing, speaking unpleasantly and giving off an 'if you don't like it, don't stay' vibe, which is off-putting.FromMYR 372

This time, I was given a room on the top floor. The air conditioning was quite noisy, and the soundproofing wasn't great. If you're a light sleeper, I'd recommend bringing earplugs. They don't provide toothbrushes, toothpaste, or combs, so you'll need to bring your own. The location is super convenient, just a short walk from Jordan Station Exit D. You can also easily walk to Donki and Victoria Harbour from the hotel. I often choose to stay here when I'm in town for concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum or to visit the Xiqu Centre in West Kowloon, as it's all within walking distance.FromMYR 260

Comfortable Stay in a Great Location
We had a wonderful stay at Best Western Plus Hotel Kowloon in Tsim Sha Tsui. One of the things we appreciated most was its convenient location—everything we needed was within easy reach, from restaurants and convenience stores to MTR stations and popular attractions.
Our room was clean and comfortable, providing a nice place to rest after long days of exploring Hong Kong. The staff were friendly and helpful, and check-in and check-out were smooth and hassle-free.
What stood out to us was how easy it was to get around the city from the hotel. Whether we were heading to Disneyland, Victoria Harbour, or simply looking for good food nearby, the location made our trip much more enjoyable.
Overall, Best Western Plus TST offered great value for money and served as the perfect home base for our Hong Kong adventure. We would definitely stay here again on our next visit!FromMYR 298

Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|2.14km from city centre
I chose this hotel because I was traveling with my mother, and she has some mobility issues. Considering everything, it was a great choice. It's super convenient for getting around, with restaurants, supermarkets, snack shops, and shopping all right outside. The metro and airport shuttle are also incredibly close, just a 2-3 minute walk away. The room was spacious enough to open two 26-inch suitcases and a smaller one, and it even had a mini-fridge. The only downside was that there's only one elevator that goes through the entire building, so you might have to wait during peak hours. But honestly, for this price and location, I think that's a minor detail worth overlooking! 🤣FromMYR 381

The room wasn't very big, and the facilities were a bit dated. Daily cleaning was done promptly as requested, but the overall hygiene was just okay. The main advantage is its excellent location for getting around, being close to the University of Hong Kong and my child's dorm. This is especially convenient for older guests, as both walking and taking public transport are easy. The surrounding small restaurants and coffee shops offer great food, and the hotel's daily breakfast was very light and tasty. Getting to and from the airport, or going shopping in Central to see the sea view, is super convenient by MTR or bus (the picture below shows the sea view near IFC in Central). Excellent experience. We arrived early and there were a lot of people checking in, but the front desk quickly arranged a room for us. Although we didn't get a twin room, the front desk attendant found a room with a 2-meter king-size bed for us, so kudos to her! 👍 We stayed on the 16th floor for four nights, and our housekeeper, Sister Ling, was incredibly friendly. The location is fantastic, right next to Tin Hau, in a very local neighborhood. It's quiet but not isolated, and if my booking hadn't been non-refundable, I would have definitely extended my stay.
There are great food options nearby, like Wah So's Clear Broth Beef Brisket and the Black Sesame Ice Cream from Warm Heart Cheese.
The service attitude, from the lobby to the doorman, was very kind and friendly.

Location: About a 5-minute walk from Wan Chai MTR station, with excellent bus connections, making transportation quite convenient. There are also plenty of dining options nearby.
Service: The front desk and room service staff were very kind and patient during check-in. When I called the front desk from my room for service, there was no discrimination against Mandarin speakers. The complimentary bottled water was a huge plus, especially on such a hot day.
Cleanliness: The interior of the guest room and the hotel lobby were clean and well-maintained. The cleaning staff were also very nice.
Facilities: Oh, the Wi-Fi in the room was a bit elusive with a poor signal. However, the air conditioning was very powerful, and the bedding was fantastic. I had a very comfortable stay in my king-size room.

I had a pleasant stay. The hotel's location is excellent, with convenient transportation—the MTR, ferry terminal, and bus stops are right downstairs, and the airport shuttle goes directly to the hotel. It's not as noisy as some of the more popular areas. The sea view room offered a wide-open view. North Point Pier is right downstairs, and there are plenty of dining options on the nearby streets. The hotel even thoughtfully provided vouchers for local snacks, which was a nice personal touch. The room's cleanliness was impeccable, and the bedding was comfortable. The only minor drawback was the slightly small room, but that's understandable given its prime location in Hong Kong. Overall, I was very satisfied and would choose to stay here again. Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|2.13km from city centre
This has been my go-to hotel in Hong Kong for years. It's located inside The Mira Place shopping mall on Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, less than a 10-minute walk to Harbour City, making it super convenient for dining, shopping, and entertainment.
The hotel entrance is a bit hidden, but as soon as you approach, someone will open the door for you. Even at 3 PM, you might not get a clean room right away, which shows how popular it is. The only thing missing is a bit of warmth in the service. The rooms come with complimentary bottled water, though they're a bit stingy with tissues. Aside from the pillows being just okay, everything else is quite comfortable.
If you're an early riser, you can head down to B3 for the gym and pool. The facilities are very well-maintained.FromMYR 598

Due to a typhoon, my flight was cancelled, and I was stranded in Hong Kong. I hurriedly booked this hotel and was pleasantly surprised by the well-designed, spacious room and quiet environment. Each floor has a water dispenser, and there are frozen foods and a microwave in the lobby, all very clean. My room had a sea view, and the beach was just a 10-minute walk away. However, there aren't any restaurants or shops nearby. The flight disruption made my trip incredibly stressful and tiring, but the peaceful stay here gave me a chance to relax. If I have the opportunity to visit Hong Kong again, I'll definitely consider this hotel first—though I hope next time it won't be due to unforeseen circumstances.FromMYR 236

Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|2.78km from city centre
I specifically chose to stay at the Rosewood Hong Kong, a benchmark for luxury hotels in the city, and overall, it met my expectations, with only a minor disappointment regarding the bathrobe.
The room layout was spacious and bright, with large floor-to-ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of the complete Victoria Harbour skyline. The daytime scene of blue seas and boats, and the nighttime spectacle of countless city lights, each had their own unique charm. The entire room featured high-quality wood furnishings and plaid soft decor. The walk-in closet offered ample storage, and the dual showers and scenic bathtub were top-notch. Amenities like toiletries, TWG tea sets, and Nespresso coffee machines were thoughtfully provided. The turndown service each evening included an aromatherapy scent and a small snack, showing exceptional attentiveness.
Service was consistently excellent throughout my stay. The concierge and butler were friendly, professional, and promptly responded to any requests. Breakfast offered both buffet and à la carte options, with high-quality Hong Kong-style Nissin Demae Itcho, desserts, and fresh fruits. The high-altitude infinity pool directly overlooks the sea; it was quiet and uncrowded, making for a perfectly relaxing swim. Direct access to K11 Musea downstairs made shopping and getting around incredibly convenient.
The only minor flaw was the quality of the bathrobes in the room. The fabric felt rather thin, lacking the softness and plushness found in bathrobes at other luxury hotels in the same category. This was a stark contrast to the otherwise exquisite and luxurious amenities in the room. The experience would be even more perfect if the bathrobe material were upgraded.
Overall, the minor imperfection doesn't overshadow the many positives. It remains a must-stay hotel for sea views in Hong Kong, and I would definitely choose it again on my next visit.FromMYR 3,081

Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|2.64km from city centre
The location is excellent, right outside Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, next to Harbour City, and very close to K11. The area is bustling with tourists and quite crowded. The hotel itself is also very popular and thus crowded with many guests. Lung Yat Heen, located on the second floor of the hotel, serves delicious food. The prices are a bit high, but hotel guests can get a 30% discount with a coupon.FromMYR 464

Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|1.85km from city centre
I really like the location here. I usually stay at this hotel mainly because the staff are so well-mannered, polite, and enthusiastic whenever you encounter them. This time, the lobby staff on the first floor actively opened the door to welcome me every time I entered or left – and the housekeeping staff were incredibly responsible, contacting me in various ways to ensure timely cleaning! That day, it was pouring rain, and I was resting in my room 😴. The girl who checked me in this time was actually the same one who checked me in last time; it was so fun and heartwarming that we recognized each other without even trying! I've long considered the Metropark Hotel Kowloon my home in Hong Kong 🇭🇰!FromMYR 482

Mong Kok Hong Kong|0.49km from city centre
This hotel offers great value for money in Hong Kong, mainly due to its excellent location, making it a top choice for many tourists. The MTR station is right outside, providing easy access to various parts of the city. There are also buses directly outside the hotel that go to the airport and high-speed rail station, so transportation is absolutely fantastic. Plus, there are plenty of delicious food options nearby; you can just walk around and find recommended eateries everywhere. However, I'm not sure if it was because of the rainy season, but it felt a bit musty, and the bedsheets didn't seem very clean.FromMYR 417

North Point and Quarry Bay Hong Kong|4.26km from city centre
We were a group of four and booked two rooms for three nights. The hotel assigned us rooms 2409 and 2413. Honestly, the hotel's location is great, very close to the subway station, which makes getting around super convenient. However, room 2413 was never cleaned and was incredibly noisy. We could hear singing, conversations, and even doors opening and closing next door. It was a really poor experience. Picture three shows room 2409, which was fine and cleaned daily. Picture four is the view from room 2409.FromMYR 277

North Point and Quarry Bay Hong Kong|4.26km from city centre
The room size is acceptable; for Hong Kong, it's pretty good, as I'm used to smaller spaces here. The power outlets were at the foot of the bed, and I initially thought there was only one, but then I found a whole strip on the desk, hidden behind a panel. Remember to bring your own universal adapter. The air conditioning was a bit noisy. Also, bring your own toothbrush; I didn't see any provided. I'm sure the front desk would supply one if asked, but they were quite busy (though their service was excellent and very friendly), and since I had my own, I didn't bother asking about toothpaste and toothbrushes. The hairdryer looked unassuming but dried my hair surprisingly fast. The location is super close to a bus stop, and there's a 7-Eleven downstairs. I walked to a nearby congee shop for a late-night snack, which was satisfying. Oh, and the coffee is free!FromMYR 253

Conveniently located between two subway stations, with two shopping malls nearby that include supermarkets. Even if it rains, there are plenty of options without having to go outside. However, the hotel is a bit old and could use an upgrade, especially replacing the carpets. A water dispenser would also be a great addition.FromMYR 261

Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|2.55km from city centre
I was really happy to find such a high-end hotel in a bustling area like Tsim Sha Tsui, and the cleanliness of the facilities was outstanding! The whole decor was palace-style, and the toiletries were very luxurious. There wasn't any strange odor in the room, which even as a clean freak, I really appreciated! The mattress was incredibly comfortable, and the soundproofing was excellent; I could barely hear any street noise from downstairs. It's also just a five-minute walk to the Avenue of Stars, and there are plenty of shopping and dining options nearby. I'll definitely choose The Langham Hong Kong again on my next visit.FromMYR 932
Hong Kong Subway (MTR) FAQs
-
How do you pay for the metro in Hong Kong?
There are two main ways to pay for the Hong Kong Metro (MTR): using an Octopus Card or purchasing a single-journey ticket (token) at station vending machines. The Octopus Card is a rechargeable smart card that you tap on entry and exit gates — it offers discounted fares and can also be used on buses, trams, and at many shops. Single-journey tokens are purchased from machines at each station using cash or credit card. Most travellers recommend the Octopus Card for its convenience and savings. -
Is the Hong Kong Metro open 24 hours?
No, the Hong Kong Metro (MTR) is not a 24-hour service. Trains generally operate from approximately 5:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. daily, though exact first and last train times vary by line and station. For late-night travel after the MTR closes, options include licensed taxis, overnight public buses (Nite buses), and rideshare services. The MTR Mobile app allows you to check specific first and last train times for your journey. -
Is MTR cheaper if you use an Octopus Card?
Yes, travelling on the Hong Kong MTR with an Octopus Card is cheaper than buying single-journey tickets. Octopus Card fares are calculated at a discounted rate compared to the full single-journey token price. For example, a short trip that might cost HK$7.00 with a token could cost HK$5.80 with an Octopus Card. Over multiple journeys during a Hong Kong visit, these savings add up meaningfully. The Octopus Card also eliminates the need to queue at ticket machines, saving you valuable sightseeing time. -
Is the Hong Kong Metro easy to use for tourists?
Yes, the Hong Kong Metro (MTR) is widely considered one of the easiest metro systems in the world for tourists. All stations feature bilingual signage in both English and Chinese, train announcements are made in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, and colour-coded line maps are posted throughout all stations. Fare gates accept Octopus Cards and single-journey tokens. The MTR Mobile app provides real-time route planning in English. Even first-time visitors typically find they are navigating the system confidently within their first day. -
What is the Hong Kong Metro called?
Hong Kong's metro system is officially called the MTR, which stands for Mass Transit Railway. It is operated by MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL), formed in 2007 when the original MTR Corporation merged with the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC). Locals and tourists alike refer to it simply as 'the MTR'. The network includes 10 metro lines, the Airport Express, and Light Rail services, making it one of the most comprehensive urban transit systems in Asia.
