Insight Resort Ahangama ★★★★
"The hotel is in a great location, right by the sea. You can see surfers and swim directly in the sea. The swimming pool in the backyard is also very large, but the facilities are relatively old and the staff speak loudly in the corridor."
Lum Residence ★★★
"Want to experience a surfing vibe, live a slow life, and receive excellent service? Lum Residence offers you the opportunity to relax and "slow down" in comfort, recharging your mind and body. Firstly, the hotel is conveniently located: set back from the main coastal road, but about a 7-minute walk from Kabalana Beach and the beachfront cafes. Along the way to the ocean, you can easily spot parrots and peacocks strolling or flying past. Secondly, the aesthetically pleasing modern space is pleasing to the eye, compactly landscaped yet tastefully detailed: plenty of greenery, island-style paintings in the rooms and at the bar, authentic decorative elements, and a shop selling souvenirs. Thirdly, you won't feel lonely or disconnected from the hotel's mini-community, as it offers a wealth of entertainment for any weather and a variety of leisure activities: a Russian banya, table tennis, a clean swimming pool, yoga, and much more. The hotel management is also incredibly engaged, attentive to each guest's comfort and well-being. The entire team communicates with you and provides feedback. Fourthly, the hotel's location effectively weeds out tourists with inappropriate behavior. The experience isn't a campy one: guests spend their time politely on the terrace of their rooms, reading books in the reception area, working at tables, or meeting new people in the evenings in the restaurant. Incidentally, every dish we tried on the menu was deliciously prepared, heartily presented, and served in a Balinese style. Some people chat over board games, but no one allows themselves to make noise or disturb others after sunset. And finally, about the rooms. Rest assured, your stay will be relaxing, because with spacious and clean rooms, high-quality toiletries for hair and body, and functional minimalism, you'll forget about stress, as everything you need for your stay is there. Suggestions for the hotel: It would be nice to have something like a foot shower at the entrance to the hotel, so you can wash off sand after the beach and not inadvertently drag it into the grounds, or at least have a sand-cleaning device right in front of the room entrance, something like a personal broom for guests. Also, I missed a place to dry clothes and towels. Unfortunately, we got so wet before check-in that we turned the entire free space into a drying room. Yes, the staff warned us about laundry service, but you can't just drop off every item when you really need it in an hour or three. Otherwise, we highly recommend it. Our stay left us with the warmest memories. We'd be happy to return if we have the chance."
Palm Garden Ayurveda Resort Ahangama ★★★★
"We arrived at Palm Garden in mid-May, which is the end of the high season in southwestern Sri Lanka, so the hotel was relatively quiet and uncrowded. The rooms are clean and spacious, with high ceilings and a pleasant view of the pool. The grounds are green, well-maintained, and very atmospheric. The staff is friendly and always ready to help. The breakfasts are also quite good by local standards. The sea is a bit far—about a 15-20-minute walk or about a 5-minute tuk-tuk ride—but otherwise, everything was great."
Wake N Flow, Ahangama - Kabalana Beach
"You won't find another secluded, quiet place like this in Sri Lanka. Well done, guys!"
Villa Alba - Ahangama ★★★★
"We booked the entire villa for our family of 6 (including adult children). It proved a perfect choice because we all had plenty of independent space, as well as communal living and dining areas (and of course the pool). The architecture and style of the villa is superb, and we loved the outlook across the rice fields. Service was faultless and the food excellent. We stayed for 7 nights and didn't tire of the menu. The only downside was that getting transport to/from the beach or Galle proved a little tricky (compounded by the fact there was 6 of us). We tried taxis, tuk tuks and PickMe - with mixed success."
Nine Palms Ahangama ★★
"We had such an amazing stay at Nine Palms, Ahangama! Honestly, everything about this place was perfect from the moment we arrived. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful. The design, the atmosphere, and the location right by the beach create such a relaxing vibe. It’s one of those places where you instantly feel like you’re on a proper holiday. Our room was spotless, comfortable, and beautifully designed. Everything was well maintained, and you could really see the attention to detail throughout the property. The staff were one of the best parts of our stay. Everyone was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help with a smile. They made us feel at home and really went the extra mile to make sure we had a great experience. The food was fantastic as well. Every meal we had was fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. Whether it was breakfast or dinner, everything tasted amazing, and we looked forward to every meal. The pool area and the beach are stunning. It was the perfect place to relax, watch the sunset, and just enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The whole property has such a calm and luxurious feel without trying too hard. What stood out the most was how everything just worked so well together—the service, the cleanliness, the atmosphere, and the overall experience. It’s rare to visit a place where you genuinely can’t find anything to complain about. If you’re planning a trip to Ahangama, I honestly can’t recommend Nine Palms enough. It’s one of the nicest places we’ve stayed in Sri Lanka, and we’d definitely love to come back. Thank you to the entire team for making our stay so memorable!"
Tri ★★★★★
"Having stayed at multiple resorts & hotels across Sri Lanka over a period of one and a half weeks, Tri by Amaya takes the win for the best stay overall for my wife and I. Situated at the edge of the Koggalla lake, the property is spread across 6.5 acres, and all the villas and the common area with it’s infinity pool and bar have an extensive frontage of the lake. 10/10 on the location and overall layout. We were immediately greeted by the General Manager Dinesh and his team upon arrival. From there on for the next 3 days, the entire team seemed to be only focussed on finding out what’d make our stay comfortable and special and then delivering on it. Without grand expectations I informed Dinesh that my wife and I were celebrating our Anniversary on Day 2 of our stay at Tri. I was immediately rounded up by the manager Mr. Harsha, the Chef, Mr. Camil and GM Dinesh to plan out the day with couple’s activities and surprises for the wifey. Day 2, started with a relaxing 90 mins couple’s massage at the Spa after a sumptuous breakfast, followed by a light lunch and drinks at the Villa. At 4 PM we hopped on for a 1.5 hour long Boat ride in the lake accompanied by supervisor, Mr. Pobuddu, who had arranged for a chilled bottle of Chilean Merlot that we sipped on while sailing across the vast lake and passing by 4-5 tiny islands inside the lake, which again was a surprise for the wifey. We stopped over at the Cinnamon island where a few families grow and sell Cinnamon. Overall, Mr. Pobuddu’s knowledge on the local ecosystem, and it’s history made for interesting conversations on the boat. We were lucky to spot a seaplane take off up close while sailing back to the resort. Later in the evening, after taking a dip in the plunge pool at the Villa (which to our surprise was re-cleaned while we were away on the Boat ride), we headed back to the common area for dinner. Harsha and team had setup a private dinner for us at the edge of the Jetty overlooking the lake, which again was a surprise for the wifey, and was immediately greeted by a smile of excitement and appreciation on her face. As if the ambience wasn’t any less overwhelming, the all vegetarian dinner prepared by Chef Camil torpedoed our plans to drink away the night. The veggie pizza, the napoli spaghetti and the veggie burger all of which weren’t on the menu, and the highlight - the eggless chocolate cake (another surprise for the wife), absolutely blew our minds, and also left the wifey impressed and stuffed, who later, also tried to convince the Chef to put those items on menu permanently. We spent the rest of our time at the lake facing villa with a plunge pool, with full height windows, and a running balcony facing the lake with seating, which was absolutely perfect to say the least. An attempt to extend our stay by a day and skip 1 night in Colombo failed unfortunately as the Villa was already booked by other guests. All in all, felt pretty lucky and happy that Tri happened at the very"

Garton's Cape
"This hotel is professionally run. The staff are excellent and very polite. The cooking is of a good standard. The room rates are very competitive and the overall level is as good as a uk or European hotel. It has a private beach beach ball kayak. Indoors various games books films pool table table tennis darts spa small gym and a nice pool."
Mosvold Villa
"Great location, very near to market. Direct access to the beach. Atmosphere at Mosvold Villa is stunning. The beach view from the deck and the pool is amazing. Rooms are spacious with amazing views. Value wise, Mosvold offers alot. Food and beverages are amazing. Very generous portions and taste is extremely good - be it breakfast or any other meal. Very well maintained and clean property. Overall we had a great stay at Mosvold. Special thanks to their staff (each and everyone of them) who were so generous and humble and helped us with everything."
Harding Boutique Hotel
"Except for the location, there was nothing positive about this hotel. Very disappointing considering we paid $356 per night. Here are the issues we faced: 1. Bathroom door issues: The bathroom door wouldn't close properly. Despite available vacant rooms, the staff, including the manager, refused to either fix the problem or shift us. Instead, they rudely suggested a refund if we were unhappy and asked us to leave — absolutely not the service you expect at this price point. 2. Limited towels: They refused to provide more than one shower towel per person per day, which was extremely inconvenient. 3. No proper toiletries: There was no shower gel provided — only tiny hand soaps, which are usually meant for handwashing, not bathing. Very disappointing for a hotel of this category. 4. Water bottles: Although they have their own branded water bottles, they declined to provide extra water when requested. 5. Poor housekeeping: Room cleaning was extremely basic — they only made the bed and changed towels. The floor was never swept during our entire stay. 6. Hygiene issues: Shockingly, we found an underwear item from a previous guest still left inside the wardrobe. Unacceptable for any standard of hotel. 7. Hat incident and unauthorized charge attempt: They initially provided only one hat when we had booked for two. Staff argued instead of resolving the issue, and even after we explained and checked out, the hotel tried to charge our card without authorization for a non-existent missing item. 8. No staff presence after 10 PM: Unlike most hotels, there is no hotel staff available after 10:00 PM or early in the morning, making it highly inconvenient for any needs outside these hours. 9. Hidden charges: Be careful — even the basic laundry bag placed in the room costs $17."
The Sandhya
"Minimalist design, open and light central atrium. There's a laid back vibe from arrival, with welcoming retro lounge furniture, unfortunately the choice to not provide air conditioning to this area makes it unbearably hot for almost the entire day/night, only when storms rolled in did people sit enjoying the space. We opted for the larger room with pool access, I don't think it's necessary the standard pool access rooms looked more than adequate. The room is very large with a decent size and very comfortable bed. The bathroom has separate bath and shower with twin sinks, in the room is a good sized safe that accomdates a large SLR camera easily, there are bath robes and single use slippers. There are also multi country plug sockets. There is no fridge and no kettle, but you can make use of the kitchenette. The house keeping was good but turn down service was hit or miss. For the most part noise from the road isn't disturbing when around by the pool, the sound of waves crashing is the constant soundtrack. Although the pool area is limited to guests only, we did notice on some days more people than rooms. The breakfast is very nice, although the outdoor tables are too small for the plates and dishes. There is a small kitchen area to help yourself for tea /coffee with wine/lion beer (at a cost). This seems like a nice idea but execution feels jumbled. If you need to find a staff member as the hotel often feels deserted, open the fridge, one will appear. The view from the property across the beach is wonderful, although it's clear there is a battle happening, illegal structures built on the beach were destroyed by police, much of the debris remained on the beach for days, the hotel has made efforts to tidy up but more structures have arrived, sadly this is symptomatic of a wider problem of lack of pride in a beautiful country with no thought to dumping garbage anywhere and everywhere Overall the hotel is very nice, kept to a high standard but after spending 4weeks touring SL, this hotel feels very expensive for the amenities and at times the service didn't have the warmth we experienced elsewhere, my 4 rating is generous as I feel 3 is too harsh."
The Coastal Village Cabanas
"Overall, it's a good hotel with its own swimming pool. It's located between Ahangama and Koggala. There's a tuk-tuk stand right next door, which made it difficult for taxis to pick us up. The room was spacious, but the door was hard to open. The internet was terrible, practically non-existent."
Kahanda Kanda
"Beautifully designed property, great service, especially the housekeeping team."
Sri Lankan Villa
"I spent the Spring Festival 2025 with a friend. The location of the hotel is quite good, very close to the beach, close to the Gaochun fishing spot, and many people surf nearby. Next to it is Kataluwa Railway Station. If you are optimistic about the time, take the train to Galle. Colompo is very convenient. I personally feel very satisfied."
