Big Bird Inn Wawa, SureStay Collection by Best Western

Big Bird Inn Wawa, SureStay Collection by Best Western ★★★

📍 191 Mission Rd, Wawa

"I booked two nights. The first time I checked in, I was assigned to a room on the south side, which was clean and tidy with no major odor. A few days later, after returning from Toronto, I checked in again and was assigned to a room on the north side. Due to poor lighting, the room had a very strong odor, which felt like mold. Since I was only staying for one night, I didn't think much of it and just let it go."

Hampton Inn by Hilton Elliot Lake, Ontario
7.9 (12 reviews)

Hampton Inn by Hilton Elliot Lake, Ontario ★★

📍 279 ON-108, Elliot Lake

"I needed a place to stay between Sault Set Marie and Sudbury, and in the off season (and on a holiday), many small motels were closed. I knew nothing about Elliot Lake but found this hotel and booked it. There were about 6-7 cars in the parking lot when we arrived around 6:30 p.m. I hadn't realized when I booked that there was an advantage to facing the back of the hotel, and the front desk clerk didn't offer to upgrade me even though I'm certain the place wasn't full. As a result, I ended up with a room right over the canopy above the front door. Between the parking lot lights and the canopy lights, my room was brightly lit all night. The blackout curtains wouldn't close completely, and placing extra pillows against them only helped a little. Moreover, as much as I tried to adjust the temperature, it was really hot in the room all night. Breakfast was standard Hampton Inn fare, and the breakfast room had a lovely view. I just wish I'd been able to get a better night's rest. "

Northlander Motel ★★
"Cean motel room, very friendly staff, comfortable beds, good water pressure, and great location for those passing through town. The price was decent, too. Bring your own small coffee filters and coffee (or coffee pouches), if you want an upgrade. Photos accurately represent the rooms.Recommended as an excellent low rate option for travellers."

Hampton Inn by Hilton Elliot Lake, Ontario ★★
"I understand that the hotel is undergoing renovations, but renovations do not excuse a lack of basic guest services—especially when you are paying **almost $300 per night**. The breakfast area was closed for renovations and breakfast was moved to the lower level, where there was nowhere to sit. We brought our food back to the room, only to discover there was no coffee available there, so I had to stop in the lobby with my breakfast to get coffee. Even more frustrating, there wasn't even a bottle of water in the room. After paying nearly $300 for the night, I actually had to go to a store after checking in just to buy water. There was also no pen, no paper, and the shower gel dispenser wasn't working. The toilet was the biggest issue. It was broken and would not function properly unless we manually added water to the tank in order to flush it. That's simply not acceptable for a hotel room at this price. I brought all of these issues to the front desk when we checked out. When I specifically asked about the lack of bottled water, I was told, *"We will have water bottles available after the renovation is complete."* "The service I received was disappointing. The front desk member I spoke with showed little concern about the issues I had raised, and there wasn't even an apology for the inconvenience." Honestly, I would expect **more** effort to be made to accommodate guests during renovations—not less. If the normal breakfast area is unavailable, provide a comfortable alternative. If amenities are temporarily reduced, compensate for that inconvenience with extra attention to the basics. At almost $300 a night, I expect a functioning toilet, working bathroom amenities, drinking water, and basic supplies in the room. Those aren't luxury extras—they're the basics. The renovations may eventually improve the property, but **guests shouldn't have to pay premium rates while receiving a reduced level of service.**"
