"❌ Disappointing experience at the Vanivola Hotel (August 2025) – avoid at all costs. We stayed at the Vanivola Hotel in Sainte-Marie, and our experience was unfortunately very disappointing, unworthy of a hotel advertised as star-rated. Here is an honest and complete review so that other travelers can book with full knowledge of the facts. 1. ❗ Booking problem. We had booked a **bungalow**, but upon arrival, we were given a **room** with the comment: "Personally, I would take the room." We had to **insist** to get what we had booked. The management was bordering on manipulative. 2. 🧼 Highly questionable hygiene. The **bungalow was poorly maintained**: * Mold on the walls and ceilings * Dirty sheets, or at least never changed * Bathroom floor still sandy even after cleaning * No trash bags provided upon arrival * Poorly maintained pool, slimy floor in the water. When we handed over the keys for cleaning, only the bed was made with the **same sheets**. No real cleaning. 3. 🍽️ ​​Poorly organized dining. The restaurant requires **ordering between 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM** for dinner. After this time, **it's impossible to eat** at the hotel, even if you're a guest. In the morning, we reserved breakfast for 8:30 AM, but at 8:30 AM it still wasn't ready: slow and disorganized service. The prices are **very high for Madagascar**, without justification. 4. 👎 Unprofessional staff. Poor listening skills and no spontaneous information about available activities, spa, massages, etc. When we asked if there were scooters for rent, we were offered a vague deal at 55,000 Ar/day (more expensive than the usual prices on the island) – we felt like they were trying to rip us off or at least inflate the prices. They also offered tuk-tuk transport at 150,000 Ar for standard trips like going to Île aux Nattes or the north, which is significantly above the normal rate. The spa/hammam was closed (not mentioned on the website), only massages were offered (60,000 Ar/hour). 5. 🧳 Chaotic check-out. We had asked to leave our luggage at reception after check-out at 11:00 AM. At 2 PM, they were still **in the bungalow**, unsupervised. No one was at reception. The restaurant staff had to call someone. Very unsafe. 6. 💸 Hidden Fees Upon our departure, we were asked for **tourist permit fees (5,000 Ar/night)** without ever having been informed of this upon arrival. This should be disclosed at the time of booking. 7. 📸 Misleading Photos The hotel photos are clearly **old and embellished**. In reality, the facilities are aging, poorly maintained, and the overall atmosphere does not reflect at all what is presented online. 🔻 Conclusion The Vanivola Hotel clearly does not deserve its stars or its reputation. It suffers from confused management, indifferent staff, a very average level of hygiene, and a generally poor organization."
