Appleby Castle ★★★

"The facilities are extremely old. The room booked on the day of check-in is broken. The entire castle is broken down. You can only stay in the rooms outside. Although the price is higher, you have to stay in an old house when booking here."

Bongate House ★★★

"Had to attend a funeral last Friday. The owner of the guest house picked us up at the local station on Thursday evening as we arrived late. First class rooms, hearty breakfast and a charming host.Saturday morning, Anne drove us to Appleby station to be informed that trains are not running because of adverse weather, so would miss our connection at Carlisle. Don’t worry says Anne,il drive you to Penrith which saved the day. Many thanks Anne, you’re a star."

"Lovely warm welcome, loved traditional feel to hotel. Bedroom comfortable, every thing you would need. Good early breakfast, perfectly timed to catch the train. Well worth the price for my one night stay, and what a charming village Appleby is."
