Rethymno Mare Royal & Water Park

"I am going to give an honest review. The sea and the beach were the best I have ever seen and experienced and I travelled a lot. Clear see through water and shallow for the family to play, very clean. The views are stunning. The old town, 15 mins in a taxi, is wonderful and full of history and great dining places and shops. The gardens around hotel grounds were beautiful and well looked after. Maris at the beach bar was very kind, attentive and did the best Pina Colada. Good slides for the kids in the kids pool. However, apart from this, nothing good to share unfortunately. We booked a family suite with the sharing pool. When we arrived at night time, it dint look like the hotel shown on pictures online at all. Reception staff at night time was very rude. The door to our suite would not close, they suggested using a chain, but it fell off! We did not feel safe sleeping with the open door all night with a 9 year old child. After many upsets and tears, the manager came and somehow managed to close the door. They even said we would sleep on the beach and they would call police, when we complained at reception, which was very upsetting start to the holiday. The rooms were very old, dirty, smelt of blocked pipes and tiny and this was a suite! They even failed to replenish toilet paper. The pool outside our room (the sharing one) was nice. However, the main pool was very small and packed, nowhere to move. the water was not clean too. The walk to the beach was across the local road, which was always busy and no driving rules followed by the locals so not safe for kids to walk. The hotel food was very bad and pretty much the same every day. They advertised resort with a few restaurants. there was only 1 buffet restaurant, which was very busy. The rest were just cafes with waffles and cold pizza and premade cold hot dogs. Main lobby bar staff was very rude. Very poor drinks and cocktails, they did not mix it at all. When I said that Maria at the beach does great cocktails and asked for the same Pina Colada I was told to go and get it from Maria, how rude! Bear in mind beach bar closes at 6pm so you are stuck with the guy at the lobby bar, who is rude and makes very poor drinks. All entertainment is in French including day water activities and kids club. After many tears at the start of the holiday, poor accommodation, service and food, we still managed to enjoy our holiday as a family and made some great friends, who shared the same experience in the hotel. However, I would not recommend and would not go back there ever again!"

"Our stay was great! The house is simple but beautiful with a lovely pool and amazing view. We were here with our 2 year old and she had a blast in the playing ground, she absolutely loved it and this meant some quiet time for us as well. It is close to Rethymno, location wise this was great. Our hostess was great and helped us out where need be. She treated our daughter with chocolates and made the best dinner. The breakfast is super as well, elaborate and yummy,"

"2 negative points: the restaurant which is not really a restaurant but rather worse than a canteen: no choice, yet we are not fussy and the worst for us is the swimming pool which runs alongside a very busy street, so no way to read or relax."

"Hotel is located close to Rethymno city in friendly place, where you can find many tavernas, shops, car rentals etc. Hotel is divided up to 4 buildings, mostly 2 floor ones. Reception is located in the main building, where is also one underground floor. Rooms located on that floor are overpriced as their quality is not good. Very small bathroom together with WC, which is not suitable for tall people (size of bathroom is approx 1x1.5m). Next (one) room is equipped with large bed with terrible quality. Any light movement on that bed produces loud noise, which disturbs your silent night. If you planned to sleep, you will be unlucky. From balcony, you can touch the car wheels. There are no clothesline available to dry your clothes and unfortunatelly there is no hooks to fit yours one. Sometime you can see cockroaches at corridor, as they are living round the hotel. There are much better rooms in the hotel, if you want to see them, visit the first floor (right from reception), there you will see completelly different quality. As we noticed, the underground floor rooms were rented mostly to travellers from CZ during our stay. As advantage, you will have the room air condition and fridge for free. Rooms are equipped also with TV, but there are mostly the German channels. Food is really good. It makes no sense to take too much of food for a first round as there were all the time full boxes of it. Even 5 minutes before the end of opening hours. Someone can say, that it is the same all the time, but there is really so many things to eat, that you can choose every day different meal. One thing we were missing is the watermelon (the red one). It was not there, but it is not the issue. If you plan to rent a car, check different rental shops, as there are many of them. Our favorite was the one located in front of the ice cream shop located at corner of Kaisareias street. We have been to Crete second time and unfortunatelly we have to say, it was a last time. The beach is not safe, especially for kids, there were plenty of syringes throwed in sand, two of them were seen in the sea too. Those syringes were probably from junkies. Nobody cleans the places. We were witnesses of dialogue of the hotel guests with some hotel guy about this (they asked to clean the place), but nothing happened. It is necessary to say, that syringes were seen also at diferent adjacent beach places (and not only there). This is the reason, why we set the Average rating."

"The staff was nice and welcoming, and helped us when we wanted to order take out. The hotel was okay, with basic appartments. It’s a 3 star hotel, and you get what you pay for. Quiet area with a few restaurants and a supermarket. The hotel is NOT in the city center of Rethymno, and you have to pay 20 EU for a taxi to the city center. If you’re looking for a hotel close to shops, bars, night life and activities you should book somewhere else. If you’re looking for a basic hotel in a quiet and relaxing area, this is a great option. The hotel is close to the beach, only a 5 minute walk."

"Spent a relaxing week, at this smaller hotel. This created a very peaceful atmosphere. Every where was so clean and tidy. Food was delicious and plentiful. Rooms were spacious, the sea view and sunsets were so beautiful. All the staff go above and beyond to help make your stay a very happy memory. My only criticism, is no hand sanitizer around or in the restaurant. I witnessed several people coming out the WC without washing hands."

"Lovely hotel a bit out the way , but lovely views , there is a regular bus to rythamon , and we did some great excursions with loci travel,the is a rep in hotel lovely pools , plenty places to relax we never had a problem with the food always something for everyone roof top was lovely to sit and relax watch the sun go down all in all we had a brilliant stay and never slept so good lol"
