For that reason, I don't recommend this ryokan due to its inconvenient and remote location. Closer options like Fukuoka or Yufuin would probably be much better."

"I really liked the wild, free-spirited feel. The hot spring town isn't so much close as it is inside the hot spring town (lol). It's great that you can walk to your favorite hot spring even if you've been drinking. What's more, the quality of the spring water in this area is amazing! There are plenty of delicious local ingredients and products at supermarkets and roadside stations, so in a way you can enjoy a luxurious meal to your heart's content. This time we went in winter, so after the sauna we jumped into the deep snow behind the building! It was also great that tourist attractions like the Blue Pond and Shirahige Falls are so close by. Next time, I'd like to bring my pet with me in the summer."

"This seems more like an airbnb that hotel but everything was great! Fully functional apartment, with clean toilets and kitchen! Space is great for a family too! There is a convenience store just a short walk away. Just one down side, if there’s someone staying above you (could be from other host), it gets noisy when they walk around. You can hear all the footsteps. Plus point, no need to carry luggages up and stairs! Oh ya, the entrance is on the side of the house."

By car, it's a 30-minute drive to Aoi Pond and Shikisai-no-Oka Hill. For a small accommodation, the breakfast and dinner are excellent. However, the open-air bath is very small."

"I stayed one night in a standard room and the overall experience was extremely disappointing. The food quality was only on par with canned goods; even the salmon was just frozen, completely lacking freshness. Both breakfast and dinner had very limited options and the dishes were monotonous, which totally put my kids off their food. The room was extremely stuffy at night, and the air conditioning was ineffective. It was hot and stuffy all night, severely affecting my sleep. The hygiene was poor; it didn't feel clean enough. The room view was terrible. There were lots of flying insects outside the window, and the constant buzzing of insects at night was a serious disturbance to my rest. The hot spring environment was even worse, with black mold everywhere, making hygiene a concern. The hot spring pools were tiny, completely unsuitable for use. Overall, the value for money was low. The food, hygiene, and facilities all fell short of expectations. I will not choose this place again."

"It is a B&B run by ********* and speaks Chinese. Dinner and breakfast are charged separately. Dinner is 4,500 yen and breakfast is 1,500 yen. I went there once in autumn and winter, and the food has not changed. If you are staying consecutively or going there for the second time, it is recommended to inform the owner in advance, and they will update some dishes for you. The room is a bit old and the public bathroom on the first floor is not open. If you have a car at night, it’s very convenient to go to Shinei-no-oka to watch the stars!"

"Extremely good B&B. We stayed three nights in two Western style rooms. Breakfasts were the best we experienced in Japan. Japanese style alternated with Western style. The hot breakfasts were served with extremely delicate and well designed plates, carefully prepared by the host herself. Volume was more like a brunch than breakfast. The breakfast room was more like a museum with Japanese cultural collections. It was a very pleasant experience to eat there. Rooms were very clean. The host Ms Kazuko was extremely nice. She booked dinner for us in Biei and Asahi Kawa (otherwise we would be turned away with reservations at those restaurants)."
