"We spend six glorious nights at 40 Winks Guest House to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we were instantly made to feel royally welcome. Our suite overlooking the river Wear and Durham Cathedral had been prepared and decorated in style with balloons, chocs etc. - see photo. Very comfortable spacious room, large bathroom with bath, stand alone shower and more than enough space for anyone. The manager George was particularly helpful with advice about the city, parking restrictions etc as well as being responsible for some wonderful breakfasts. 40 Winks will suit people who want a quiet, peaceful place to stay. Five suites and four other bedrooms give it a quite an exclusive vibe and together with the dark, tasteful decoration in the staircase and landings it is quite sumptuous. Are there any downsides? I guess if you have mobility issues the stairs may not be easy as the property has no lift because it is a period townhouse and there is only on street parking - expensive outside but much cheaper in a side road. Listening to the soft bells of Durham Cathedral drifting across the river Wear as you wake or go to sleep however is completely relaxing. Highly recommended."

The breakfast served by a waiter/waitress but on the first day,(Saturday), after ordering our breakfast we waited one hour before it came, on the second day we waited 45 mins before it arrived. By this time the toast and tea were cold."

"My cousin and I stayed for 1 night as we were catching up with our other cousin who lives in Durham. We were checked in quickly by a lovely lady who was working on the bar. The room was basic but spotlessly clean as was the bathroom. We were also asked what time we would like breakfast the following morning. We had a few pints in the bar before going into Durham for a meal. Breakfast was hot and plentiful and very tasty. Plenty of tea and coffee too. My only bugbear was the distance from the city centre and the hill but that’s why it’s such a reasonable price. Taxis were cheap though and if we hadn’t been on a timescale we would have walked in. We did walk it to the train station when we checked out. It’s downhill and only took us about 20 minutes (we’re not spring chickens lol) if we are ever meeting up again I wouldn’t hesitate to book The Shoes We were made to feel very welcome"
My Way Guest House
"The room was spotless and nicely furnished with THE comfiest bed! The bathroom was large and there were copious fluffy white towels (but no bathrobes as described). The views were tremendous and it was really close to Durham. The lounge area was lovely and accessible all the time. But…the breakfast was self-service continental style and we (and the other couple staying) loaded and put on the dishwasher which we’ve never done in a B&B before! The bedroom is within a conservatory and it was sooo hot. On our final night we asked for a fan as we couldn’t get a breeze from the window as the conservatory door was closed at night. The fan made for a better night’s sleep and I would suggest that the rooms have one in there permanently. On the confirmation email it did say that guest rooms were not guaranteed noise free. Maybe a touch of an understatement! We could hear the man next door having a good old yawn and if we weren’t talking ourselves, we could hear their conversations. Eeeek. It was a lovely location but I did think it was expensive. We used our Christmas present BuyAGift ‘2 night luxury stay’ vouchers and as we stayed a 3rd night, we paid the difference which was £230! Ouch."

"Nice small B&B just across the river from Durham Cathedral and Castle. Charming building (a little hard to find - best thing is navigate to St Margaret of Antioch Church which is right next door) with modern updating inside. Quiet street. Superbly prepared individual breakfast."

"When we were looking for somewhere to stay we were concerned that there had been no reviews written for here since 2022? However due to being offered at a good price and being satisfied with what reviews were offered we chose to stay for two nights in May 2024. The checkin was easy and the accommodation (Hen House) is well presented, comfortable and warm. We found the information folder made us smile as it referenced info from 2019 & clearly hadn’t been updated for some time. The lack of any information detailing walks we could take from the accommodation with our two dogs was also frustrating. That said, we got what we wanted, a peaceful stay in a handy location. We had an enjoyable time exploring Durham city as well as Hamsterley Forest. We self catered with no issues. The WiFi was essential for the smart TV to work, so when the WiFi was knocked off on our last day before we had even left, meant our last impression wasn’t great. If we needed to stay in the area again we would consider returning though."

"Stayed here for the bank holiday weekend as we were visiting Ushaw house and gardens for the classic car show and this is 5 mins away in a beautiful village with great pub. The Bay Horse, as recommended by John the owner of the cottage. Good communication prior to arrival. Comfy bed, great rain shower, dishwasher oven and microwave. Nice little touches like a pint of milk in the fridge salt pepper and oil in the cupboard. Easy parking right outside. Clean and looked after. Definitely worth the money, and lovely village location. ."
