"We loved our stay here. The reception staff are so helpful. They put us in touch with a lovely family (Miriam and family) who provide a wonderful taxi service all over the island. They are the best place to go for any advice. Food was very good. But the best part was the amazing views from the dining room which looks out across the swimming pool to Mt Pico. The clouds change by the minute and the sunsets are fabulous. Take your camera. You can sit inside or out. You get the same view from rooms facing the harbour. Highly recommended!"

"The biggest positive about Hotel Horta is the staff. Everyone we dealt with was friendly and genuinely seemed to be trying their best. Unfortunately, the hotel itself was a huge disappointment and, in our experience, nowhere near the standard we would expect from a 4-star hotel. The hotel has virtually no atmosphere. The bar was closed most of the time, there was no bar service or music around the pool, and there aren't even toilets conveniently located near the pool area. The pool itself is quite small and is down several flights of stairs away from the main hotel area. We were allowed to take our own drinks from the hotel bar down to the pool, but were then told to bring the trays back ourselves. So essentially, we were carrying drinks and trays up and down several flights of stairs and providing our own poolside service in a supposed 4-star hotel. It honestly felt bizarre. Our first room smelled of mould, the air-conditioning wasn't working properly, the water pressure was very weak and the hot water took several minutes to come through. The bed was EXTREMELY hard — genuinely like sleeping on a wooden shelf — and the pillows were absolutely horrible. After we complained, the staff moved us to another room, which was slightly better, and we appreciated them trying to help. However, the overall standard was still nowhere close to what we expected. In the second room, the shower drain was so slow that the shower tray was filling with water. We removed the drain cover so the water could actually drain away. The following day, rather than investigating why it had been removed, it was screwed back into place. That evening at around 11pm, we ended up with a flooded bathroom. It was the final straw in what had already been a very disappointing stay. We really wanted to enjoy this hotel, and again, the staff themselves were lovely. But friendly staff cannot compensate for poor facilities, maintenance issues, uncomfortable rooms and a complete lack of atmosphere. If you're simply looking for somewhere quiet to sleep, you may feel differently. But if you're expecting the facilities, service and atmosphere normally associated with a 4-star hotel, we definitely would not recommend Hotel Horta. It needs significant improvement before it can realistically deliver the experience its star rating suggests."

"What a wonderful hotel! I spent 5 wonderful nights listening to the sound of waves against the rocky shoreline located just across the street from my apartment. Lofts Azul Pastel is a family-run hotel with a friendly and efficient staff; when I reported that the shower head leaked a bit, it was replaced immediately. Excellent value for money, the hotel is located just on the outskirts of Horta, with an easy 20 minute walk along the coast into town. If I return to Faial Island, I'll definitely try to stay again at Lofts Azul Pastel. Muito obrigado!"
