"I went hiking on Mount Takao and tried out a Japanese hostel. It was very clean, the facilities were new, and they had a bonfire area and an activity room for ping-pong, board games, and meetings. I wasn't used to the sandwiches and healthy salads in the breakfast box; my Chinese stomach struggled to handle only cold food for breakfast. The atmosphere was completely different from Chinese hostels—would you believe a hostel with a wabi-sabi style? The outdoor bonfire barbecue was too lively, and playing music and singing drew complaints from other guests. This probably reinforced some of my stereotypes about Chinese people."
