"We came here for Sunday lunch. Our first impression is that it’s more like a sprawling hotel than a traditional country pub. Open and spacious, rather than cosy. It’s modern and well appointed with ample parking and plenty of uncrowded tables. The staff are pleasant, helpful, and accommodating. The cask ales were nice, but mine was a bit cloudy and maybe overcooled. It tasted fine. The gochujang belly pork we had for starter was tasty and unctuous, but very rich and could have done with something to mop up, or cut through, the copious fat of the pork belly. The roast beef dinner was huge, and the meat itself was perfectly cooked and melt in the mouth tender. The Yorkshire puddings were also huge and a nice mixture of airy and chewy. However, all the trimmings: the vegetables, the potatoes, and the gravy, were almost devoid of seasoning. This seems to be a modern tendency, but it ruins the food, in my opinion. Also, the roast potatoes were really not very good. They were not much more than boiled potatoes with a thin skin. I had toffee cheesecake for dessert, which was very nice."

"Had a wonderful afternoon tea with friends, in The Snug. It's such a cosy and pretty space, a perfect for sitting and chatting. The afternoon tea was excellent and very reasonably priced. The service was excellent and we very well looked after. We couldn't eat everything, there was such a lot, but it was packed up for us so we could each enjoy it at home. Double Gate Farm is a real find and I'm sure I'll visit again."

"My partner and I stayed here from Friday night to Sunday on an impulse booking for my birthday. We haven't been away for a looooonnggg time, so we wanted somewhere relaxed and friendly, not too highbrow, and in nice surroundings. We paid 180 for bed and breakfast and a small double ensuite. We arrived at 5pm and were greeted straight away by Evie, who, like all the staff, was friendly, helpful and clearly knew her job. We were shown to our room, another nice touch, and booked in for dinner. We ate there that evening, enjoying great food and a nice atmosphere. The pub is very well kept, and if it isn't peak luxury, is clean and well maintained (except for the TV in the room but I'll get to that). Room was compact and we found the double bed a touch too small, so if you're blessed with a bit of extra padding (like us) you might want to book the family room. Ummm... what else can I say? It is a nice local pub with quite a noisy Friday night crowd but not in a bad way by any means. Breakfast is continental; I'm GF so I stuck with yoghurt and fruit, which was ample. We had the pizza on the Saturday night, freshly made to order in the outside pizza oven. That was really lovely, and again, super relaxed and friendly staff member. In short, if you're looking for somewhere to park yourself in between exploring the various castles and caves not too far away, and if you're after substance over shine, then this is the place for you. Pros: Nice, friendly, knowledgeable staff. Comfortable surroundings. Interesting and well set out decor (can't stand mannequins but she didn't come alive to chase me, so that's ok. You know who I mean.) Great food. Good value for money. Great selection of beers. Pretty outdoor area, really well maintained. Clean Comfortable room. Mini fridge with gratis bottles of water for guests. Strong WiFi connection. Cons: When the outer door at the bottom of the stairs shuts it sends a draught up and makes the room doors jolt. Kind of annoying. We couldn't get the TV channels working, but I had my laptop, so we connected to the free WiFi and watched a film on that. All good, and tbf, we may well have just not done it right. Again, it wasn't really an issue."

Traveling with friends
The Litton ★★★★
"Stayed here three nights. Room very well appointed, clean and fresh and comfortable with high quality bed. Would have preferred the window opening to be less restricted though. The breakfasts were good, efficiently served and cooked to order. My evening meals were not quite up to scratch unfortunately. The bocconcini and heritage salad should have had pink onion but came with a large ordinary pickled onion which spoiled the flavours. Shame! My salmon with puréed cauliflower and chorizo with “green oil” was a very wet dish and tasteless. I left most of it. No idea what the green oil was; dill, parsley or Duckhams 20/50? I also had the fish and chips which had undercooked stodgy inedible batter and greasy chips. I ate the fish itself which was actually just right. On all these matters I commented to the waiting staff at the time and did get an apology for the fish. On the plus side my duo of lamb was perfect and the desserts affogato and treacle sponge also excellent. All the staff were pleasant, efficient and attentive. Would have been five stars without the food mishaps."

"Stayed here to attend a course nearby. What a fantastic place. Gorgeous cosy inn. Room was fabulous with a large comfy bed, good quality bed linen & a large en-suite that had a roll top bath & separate shower too. Delicious food and excellent customer service. Would highly recommend a stay or a meal here."

Double-Gate Farm ★★★★
"We had an amazing five night stay as B &B guests. Nothing was too much trouble for Debbie and her team. There was a good choice for breakfast, which had the selection on the Double-Gate app. Debbie emailed detailed information on how to find the farm and how to download the app. We had a lovely twin bed room with the use of a comfortable lounge with television, there was also a television in the bedroom Both rooms were clean and comfortable. There was large bathroom ensuite, which also catered for a person with disabilities. The refreshments were replenished daily with clean mugs . We stayed in the Swallow Barn. If the weather had been warmer it would have been possible to sit the garden. There are laundry facilities available as well for guests."

"A group of friends and I spent two nights in this great hotel. The food is top rate (I had gravlax with a tequila sorbet followed by loin of cod), the manager Tom is both professional and friendly - as are all his staff. The pub garden is a mass of blooms. There is a huge outdoor TV - we watched England lose against Argentina - and a camp site. Thanks to one and all, it was great!!!"
