Kona Hotel Verona ★★★

"We stayed at this hotel for five nights as part of a group tour. Unfortunately, the location was not convenient. The hotel is in a small town, with a long walk to the nearest supermarket and restaurants. We had to buy bottled water from the hotel bar to keep in our room, but the bar was not always open. The hotel is actually spread across three buildings. The large, newer building is the four-star hotel, while the other two are three-star. We were assigned to one of the three-star buildings. We asked if we could upgrade our room and pay the difference, but the hotel refused, saying the four-star building was fully booked. Most of the reviews here appear to be for the four-star section, which provides a very different experience. Getting to our room was inconvenient. We first had to take a small elevator down to the basement (or use the stairs), then walk through the basement to another building and take a second elevator up three floors. When the first elevator arrived, the basement was often completely dark when the elevator doors opened. Unfortunately, the elevator was frequently out of service, making access to our room even more difficult. The room itself was acceptable, and the air conditioning worked well, which was appreciated. However, everything felt outdated and worn, with technology that seemed to belong to the last century. The bed was hard and uncomfortable, and the mattress was about 20 cm narrower than the bed frame, making it awkward to sleep on. We were also concerned about fire safety. The emergency exit maps were confusing and inconsistent depending on where they were posted, making them difficult to understand. There were no illuminated exit signs or emergency lighting in our building, which was worrying. We could only hope to find our way out if an emergency occurred. One night, some of our friends started sending us messages saying that the fire alarm was sounding loudly in their building. They had evacuated and were waiting in the lobby of the three-star building. We never heard the alarm on our floor, so we had no idea anything was happening and did not evacuate. Our friends waited for quite some time, but no firefighters or emergency services arrived. Eventually, hotel staff came and tried to silence the alarm, but did not seem to know how the system worked. They blamed members of our group for triggering the alarm, although nobody knew anything about it. In the end, the staff simply disabled the fire alarm system, leaving it effectively inactive. The following day, I inspected the area myself. I discovered that there were fire doors between their building and ours, exactly as required by fire safety regulations. However, the doors had been wedged open with wooden blocks, preventing them from closing automatically even while the fire alarm was activated. This is a serious safety issue that must be addressed. Fire safety should never be neglected. The hotel was generally clean, and the staff did their best. However"
