"Another amazing stay at the catalyst! Two years ago I had forgotten my headsets, winter gown and a charger; they contacted me whilst I was at the airport regarding my oopsie and I let them know that I couldn’t come back to the airport as I was awaiting a flight, I asked them if they could safeguard my belongings and we communicated via email a year later- I hadn’t had the chance to return back to collect them. Two years later, I checked into the Catalyst again not expecting them to have kept my belongings, however, two years later not only had they kept my belongings in mint condition and they returned them back to me. A big thank you to everyone at the Catalyst, thank you for being trustworthy and providing impeccable customer service and support. I can not recommend you enough!!"

"Wonderful overnight stay at an exceptionally enjoyable property. What blew me away were the grand hotel grounds, gardens, attention's to design detail, and the size and comfort of the rooms. There’s an Alice on Wonderland theme running through the hotel, with its checkerboard floors, walkway with mirror, white rabbit details and Queen ot Hearts motifs in their tea room, The buildings itself felt deeply historic and special, we were told the property was owned by THE Oppenheimer family. I didn’t know that before arriving but I would have loved to know more about that before our stay. The rooms were very quiet, comfortable, and the hotel was located in a safe, quiet gated area within Johannesburg. As with all hotels in we experienced in Africa, there are minimal amenities (1 shower cap and 1 vanity kit), so always best to bring your own; Service was excellent but if you want a spa appointment book ahead. We were only there for a day in transit, so didn’t get to enjoy the spa as it was already fully booked when we arrived. The rooms were very large and clean, with 2 queen sized beds for us in the twin room. The pool was not clean though- which I expect because it’s winter for them at this time they don’t maintain it during this season, Overall, we really enjoyed the hotel; this was our second stay here: I highly recommend it as a safe, quiet base to stay if you’re doing an overnighter in Johannesburg."

Hyde Park Guest House
"Dangerous! We arrived yesterday at 20:00 and the manager said to us that there is no electricity and there is a noise from their generator in the rooms. We could not stand loud and permanent mechanical noise and have requested new rooms. The new rooms were more quiet, there was a heater and electricity. However, at 22:00 the staff of the guesthouse switched off his own generator and there was no electricy, no heating, no hot water the whole night till 6 a.m. when they switched it on! The temperature was 3 degrees Celsius above zero and we could not sleep, suffered of the extreme cold in the room. We were dressed with wool hats on. We feel terrible and think that a damaged was caused to us by the actions of the guesthouse. They have not cancelled the booking and have not notified us in advance. We were helpless at night! We have never booked an extreme cold room with no heating, no hot water and no electricity! This was dangerous for us!"

"This was an interesting experience because as we arrived, we had police vans parked in the parking. Of course there’s any visitors seeing this. It causes alarm because you are not quite sure why they come there. The room was very big and everything was clean, but the noise was almost unbearable. All hours there were people coming in and out so if you want to relaxing vacation, this is not the place. And unless we had a room that was not located in the right area, I’m not sure. The restaurant on the hotel premises was good and the food was tasty and there were many options with lovely music and the vibe was great. There was also a swimming pool that we did not use because we went in winter but it looked pretty good. There were no slippers and robes for us to use, which did not add that luxury experience. Someone had allowed us to use their Netflix for several days before it got cut off and we were not sure how to watch TV at all in the room was not really that fun. Fortunately we had sent in close by and many other things to do and we had hired a car (the Avis is very close by which is wonderful and convenient) so we spent our time wandering around which was also wonderful. Overall, I would give this a 3 star out of 5."

I only wish I could have prolonged my stay, but I am looking forward to returning on my next trip to Johannesburg."
