"The service was excellent. Our room had two air conditioners, but one wasn't working. Hotel staff came immediately to fix it, and although they couldn't repair it in the end, the hotel promptly arranged a complimentary extra room for us. Plus, we had personalized service for breakfast and dinner, enjoying a very traditional Kaiseki meal and beautiful sunset views. There's also a free 50-minute private onsen session, perfect for families to enjoy together, and you can borrow yukatas. By the way, when we visited, there weren't many Asians, mostly Japanese people. 🤫"

"For our return visit to the area, we decided to try out Ryotei Hanzuiryo, the most famous and luxurious of the Unzen ryokans, and among the most renowned properties in the entire country. Hoping to snag one of the two Tokubetsu Shitsu (Special Rooms) with open-air bath, we called them 9 months prior to our planned visit (when booking online, they only start accepting reservations 8 months out.) For those of you wishing to stay in one of the Tokubetsu Shitsu rooms, they allow reservations a year in advance via phone. Due to its high prices (often over double the rate of Hoshino and Unzen Kyushu Hotel, both nearby), it does tend to have some decent availability if you plan even a few months ahead. Established in 1993, the "ryotei" in Ryotei Hanzuiryo stands for a place that serves high-end Japanese cuisine, which is not unlike the Auberge moniker attached to Western properties that offer gourmet dining. It really is the ryokan's claim to fame, and based on our dining experience here, it definitely lives up to its name. The 14-room property was recently acquired by Onko Chishin, the company behind Setouchi Retreat Aonagi, Iki Kairi Murakami, Goto Retreat Ray and Muni Kyoto, among others. While we were a tad concerned about the changing of the guard, we were relieved to learn the head chef was retained under the new ownership. In fact, just about everyone there were holdovers from the previous regime, with the exception of a handful of new hires that were brought in to handle communication in major foreign languages, including English. The 14-room property is nestled in a secluded area about 10 minutes away by foot from the central Unzen district (and the Unzen Hells.) The one drawback, however, is that this property is only offers in-room Onsen in the two special rooms due to regulations on the amount of Onsen the ryokan can draw from the main Onsen fields. From what I understand, the older properties in Unzen (Kyushu Hotel, Unzen Kanko Hotel, etc.) have first dibs on the hot springs and also make the rules. Hoshino Resorts KAI Unzen also has no restrictions since the rights were grandfathered in from the old establishment that existed on the grounds that Hoshino acquired. Although Ryotei Hanzuiryo does have a communal Onsen bath, for those wishing for in-room Onsen, the lack of them in the non-special rooms is a significant drawback. Whereas the more centrally-located Kyushu Hotel and KAI Unzen are modern buildings with contemporary decor, Ryotei Hanzuiryo is far more traditional - the buildings are sukiya style (a type of old-school Japanese structures) that beautifully blends into the lush surroundings, moss-laden gardens and Koi-infested ponds, giving it an incredibly peaceful vibe that is reminiscent of Takefue, Gosho Gekkoju and Wanosato. Inside, it's a mixture of Showa-era aesthetics mixed with traditional Japanese elements. "This inn had been renovated, and the building and rooms were very clean. I usually stay at Iseya in Obama Onsen, but it was fully booked that day, so I decided to stay at Yunoka. I stayed on Saturday, March 29th, and it cost 29,700 yen for one night with dinner and breakfast. I think it's a little more expensive than Iseya. The room was spacious and very clean. There was a TV in the Japanese-style room, probably a 55-inch TV. However, you can see the sea from the bed, so you'll probably end up watching it in the Japanese-style room. There was a private bath in the room, which I think was larger than the private bath at Iseya. Anyway, the view from the bath and the room was absolutely amazing! You can really relax! Also, you can use the family bath for free. The view is nice, but it feels like you can be seen from all sides. There are curtains or something to hide it from, though. Dinner had a wide variety of dishes, and I was completely full! Unfortunately, they didn't have Rokujuyoshu, my favorite Nagasaki sake. I really hope they start stocking it! Breakfast also had a wide variety of dishes, and I was very satisfied. It's an inn I would like to stay at again."

"The hotel is located in Unzen, Nagasaki. Transportation in Unzen is inconvenient. There is no train station for public transportation, only a bus stop. The hotel is in front of the Unzen Information Center. You can get there immediately after getting off the car. There are staff at the door who warmly welcome you. This is a time-honored hotel that opened in 1917. Now it has been renovated. The main restaurant can still see its original appearance. The space is decorated with high peach and classical styles, facing the fairy atmosphere of hell. It is very classic and tasteful. The rooms all have hell views. There are three high-end hotels in Unzen. Kyushu Unzen faces the main view of hell. Kai Unzen faces a smaller hell view but has large windows and a good view. Unzen Miyazaki Hotel also has a good view of hell and has one. The garden is very beautiful, but I didn’t book this hotel because I didn’t have room and board for one person. Three hotels are within walking distance. Kyushu Unzen has French cuisine for dinner, which tastes good and has good ingredients. The Japanese and Western set meals are available for breakfast, which is also good. The hotel does not have a large public bath. Each room has a bathing pool. The hot spring water contains Yunohana, which is acidic and not as slippery as other hot springs. The room has a Japanese tatami which is useless and takes up space. The shortcomings of the facilities are that the hair dryer is poor, there is no overall control of the lights, and the panel has bright spots that affect sleep. Someone in the lounge serves coffee and alcohol for free, and there is a terrace with views and tea on the top floor. Compared to the hotel, the sulfur smell is much stronger than that of Kai. In short, it is recommended to stay in Unzen. The last picture is Unzen Miyazaki and Unzen Kai."

"This ryokan left mixed feelings. We decided to walk from the bus stop to the ryokan, and that was a mistake. Along the way, we passed dilapidated and abandoned ryokans, one of which still had a wreath from a funeral. What we saw was truly terrifying. At the ryokan itself, we were greeted warmly. They took our suitcases and took us to our room. They treated us to cold matcha and canelé. I was shocked and very upset by my room. It felt like it hadn't been renovated since the ryokan opened. The walls were very dirty, there were cobwebs on the lamp, and the bathroom mirrors were all dirty. The only thing we enjoyed was the beautiful view from the window. We weren't able to try the onsen, as people with tattoos are not allowed. At 7 PM, they laid us out on a tatami mat. The pillow had bones and wasn't very comfortable. In the morning, we went to the restaurant for breakfast. They served classic Japanese dishes. Everything was delicious and beautiful. After check-out there was a transfer to the bus stop."
