Hlosi Game Lodge - Amakhala Game Reserve

Hlosi Game Lodge - Amakhala Game Reserve

"My girlfriend and I just got back from our very first safari trip and it was more than what we had expected. As a matter of fact, we really didn't know what to expect in the first place when we made our reservation but boy were we in for a treat. I can go on writing a lengthy review about the 5 days that we spent there but I do not want to ruin it for others. Instead, I would urge the new readers to take a trip over there instead and experience it for yourselves!!! Just to summarize, the place was fantastic. Neat and clean and nicely laid out. All the staff at the lodge were terrific. Each and every one of them seemed to go above and beyond to satisfy our needs and make our stay more pleasant. Special shout out to Sino, Ntosh, Nollie and Nosange. Chef Mama P and Chef Dudu worked their magic in the kitchen. It didn't matter if it was breakfast, lunch or dinner because all the food that the two of them prepared for us were scrumptious. As for our game drive and tour guide, Kutaza was exceptional. A young and talented individual with abundant knowledge about the wildlife and one who simply loves what he does. He was also very accommodating during our 10 drives, answering all the questions that we had for him and stopping for photos and videos whenever we asked him to do so. Finally, we would also like to thank Igna Tregoning at Shield Tours for providing punctual and great transportation service between Port Elizabeth airport and Hlosi Lodge. Both drivers Allan and Charles made our hourlong journey quite enjoyable."

Founders Lodge by Mantis

📍 Sidbury, Grahamstown
★★★★★ 10 (43 reviews)

"All of the reviews are correct. From the moment you get there to the moment you leave, everything is taken care of. We stayed two nights and wish we had stayed at least three or four. Each game drive goes to a different section of the 50,000 acre Samwari Nature Reserve. Our Ranger, Sikhumbuzo, was the best!! He had extensive knowledge of the animals and a keen sense for where they were going and how to put us in a place where we could see their movements. He was always joyful and good humored. When we go back, we will ask for him again. He really made our first Safari experience one we will never forget. We saw an incredible number of animal species, but some of the highlights were the herd of elephants, rhinos, giraffes, lions, hippos, zebra, lots of different types of antelope, cheeta, etc. And the staff, beautiful hotel and room design, placement and the Chef really made our stay the best we had in South Africa. Highly highly recommend!! It’s worth every penny."

Storms river is a beautiful place in a beautiful part of the world and this guest lodge was a great choice The owner took the time to know my plans, gave excellent advice and even organised a shuttle for me. Very comfortable and quiet place for sleep and relax. Breakfast is generous, fresh and delicious. Great range of choices. Even does an excellent cappuccino!!! Highly recommended"

"A really beautiful accommodation close to Addo Elephant park. There are breathtaking sunrises and sunsets from the room, an indoor and outdoor shower in the room, very spacious bedrooms and terraces and just the perfect place to relax after a long day animal spotting! The staff are really helpful and the setting is just stunning. The food was also amazing and they put on a 4 course dinner in the evenings. It was also great value for money."

Woodall Country House and Spa Hotels in Western District

Woodall Country House and Spa

"This has got to be one of the most beautiful places to stay in S. Africa. We were lucky and received an upgrade which was perfect. The staff are extreemly friendly including all those with responsibilities and includes the chamber maid, just everyone. I would recommend this hotel in all aspects whether it be the location, the rooms, the service, the restaurant, the safari tour. We had a lovely time. Thanks to you all, David"

The Sands @ St Francis Hotels in Western District

The Sands @ St Francis

"Hotel room and pool was nice but would not recommend staying here and definitely would not recommend eating here, the food was terrible! My oysters were completely frozen and when I asked for new ones they brought out half frozen ones. My husband’s fish was also inedible, it tasted horrendous and was so rubbery. On check out they charged us the full price for the meal (apart from the fish) including the salad that went with my husband fish. Following this disappointing stay we arrived at our Safari and waiting for us there on reception was the bill from the Sands as the payment hadn’t gone through. This could have had this emailed to us or sent through or agent but instead put a downer on our arrival at Pumba. We were also a honeymoon couple and they had no idea about this on arrival. Very disappointed with this stay!"

"Breakfast was not mentioned on arrival at the front desk that it was included during the stay.NO breakfast packages were offered on departure, so Francois did not turn that offer down as it was not mentioned."

Misty Mountain Reserve Hotels in Western District

"We booked a Luxury Tent for our 2 night stay. But thanx to Henry for moving us to the Honeymoon Chalet named Ostrich which was very spacious with a view to die for. The corner spa bath and fireplace made the room even better and homey and was thorougly utilised. The staff was friendly and ever so helpful. Also the communal bar and living room with fireplace was neat and tidy and we recommend getting a drink or cocktail from the bar and enjoying the lovely view of the ocean. The monkeys and peacocks visiting the chalets during the day was also very nice and not a nuisance. Also take the time to walk the David Lane hiking trail to the lookout point with a breath taking view. Thank you Misty Mountain for having us and we will definatley be back again..."

"The environment is clean and the waiters are sincere. I suggest you choose this lodge if you want to see wild animals."

Cape St Francis Resort Hotels in Western District

Cape St Francis Resort

"This is probably the worst place to stay in terms of accommodation as the rooms are dilapidated and really run down. Needs a major revamp. Also to have decent meals you would have to pass shacka which could be dangerous for night driving. Definitely would not recommend this resort."

Hlosi Game Lodge - Amakhala Game Reserve ★★★★
"This is a magical location for a family safari. The hotel staff sure super accommodating from start to finish - and always have smiles to greet you. Nothing is too much trouble! The food is fantastic - great choices and wonderfully prepared. I have to say, the green goddess omelette is the best omelette I’ve ever had! The rooms are spacious and spotless - air conditioned when needed and the staff switch them to heaters if the weather changes. The staff put on an amazing show on our first night - wonderful singing and authentic dancing! Magical!! The safaris are incredible!! We saw the big five and a wealth of other species and the guide “K” was an absolute rockstar!!! All in all - a perfect choice"

"What a wonderful experience. Game Lodges come in all shapes and sizes but this small 7 suite boutique lodge within the Shamwari Reserve in the Eastern Cape of SA hits the right balance. We have been to many in South Africa and this is now our favourite for this reason. This is the former homestead of the Mantis collection who have preserved the country house feel. It’s not glitzy and Brash like some, no spa, no TV’s but it is unobtrusively professionally run by Glynnis and her team with genuinely friendly efficient staff. The rooms are spacious and well equipped and have an individual intimacy. A lovely touch each your meals were taken in a different location. A special shout out to Chantel (front of house) and Craig (head ranger) who went over and above to sort out the issue with our hire car by organising a new battery to be couriered to the Lodge from 65kms away. Allowing us the peace of mind to relax and enjoy our game drives with our hugely knowledgeable and entertaining ranger Sikhumbuzo."

Addo Dung Beetle Guest Farm ★★★★
"I participated in the Addo Ultra Run last weekend. Registration was at nearby Hayterdale Trail Campsite. What a perfect place to stay a night before as we have to be at the campsite super-early on Saturday. Even better I met fellow runners staying there and we shared stories and experience. Felt like the whole hotel occupied by runners! Perfect stay, good dinner and breakfast and another lovely African hospitality. Smooth check-in (pre-payment made via ***********). Special mention to the reception Manager and David and the kitchen team for entertaining my request for packed-breakfast and the modified menu for subsequent dinner & breakfast meals. The balcony view as well as Lapa upper deck view of the surrounding citrus farm and Addo National Park as far as Zuurberg Mountain (I guess) are amazing. Early morning birds and dozens of bird nests on the tree (some with little chicks) added to the atmosphere. And the pool by the pond and jacuzzi looked so inviting but couldn’t get a chance to dip in. In short, two-night stay wasn’t enough. Will back for this and more. Love from Malaysia! Shaari"

"We had an incredible stay at the Storms River Guest Lodge. We came during shoulder season so it was quieter and we LOVED it! Maria and her husband run the lodge with immense kindness, respect, and care for their clients. The property is extremely safe and there is so much to walk to and do in the surrounding area. I would recommend staying here to anyone!"
