Kafutei

Kafutei ★★★

📍 177 Kikukamachi Ikenaga, Yamaga

"The best ryokan experience of our 5 day driving trip, certainly a great finale. We drove from Ibusuki to this place, truly great to pass by many ryokans and this property was up a hill overlooking farmlands. Well maintained and kept updated, truly traditional design overall, with a beautiful public onsen baths, indoor and outdoor. Booking with dinner and breakfast is a must, dined like any Michelin starred restaurant, attentive services and warm hospitality from all staffs. I will come back again!"

Yamaga Onsen Fuji Hotel
8.3 (14 reviews)

Yamaga Onsen Fuji Hotel ★★★

📍 506 Shōwamachi, Yamaga

"Yamaga Onsen is located in the suburbs of Kumamoto. It takes more than an hour to get here from Kumamoto. The hotel is a traditional old hotel. The related bathing facilities are old, but it is more humane. The breakfast is a set meal, very traditional Japanese"

"We stayed at the newly built Annex Premier in March. The rooms and indoor baths were spacious, so it was a luxury to spend time there for two. The alcohol and soft drinks in the fridge were provided free of charge, so we could refresh ourselves with a beer on the terrace after the bath. The breakfast was excellent, but the dinner was Showa-era wedding food and the taste was not so good. Other than that, we were satisfied. From welcoming us upon arrival to seeing us off upon departure, it seems that the staff are well trained in customer service. We also used the observation lounge before and after dinner, so I will post some photos. The night view was impressive."

📍 702 Munakatadōri, Yamaga

"Although the sparrow is small, it is a well-equipped hotel. There are many facilities/activities such as ping pong, billiards, roasting marshmallows, bar (with free ¥1000 drink vouchers), the only drawback is that the room only has a small bathtub and no hot tub. Opt for the cheapest room shape to give me a view of the river, good scenery, a quiet little town, highly recommended."

"I found a hot spring hotel by chance. I received attentive and detailed services from the moment I arrived at the hotel. I felt very friendly. At dinner, the hotel owner came to thank me personally. It was a very good experience."

"The basics were not done and the basic service was poor. First of all, it seems that you check in with a terminal, but in the end you get the key from the staff and tell them the meal time, so there is no point in checking in with a terminal. You get a receipt and have the meal time written on the receipt. There is a QR code on the receipt, so if you don't understand, look here. They say you have to lay out your futon yourself! When I went to the room, there were no sweets, which is rare for a hot spring inn. I wanted to drink tea, but the pot was on top of the refrigerator and there was no water. I looked for water, but there was no water and when I called the front desk, they said to use tap water! Unbelievable! I tried drinking some tap water, but the aftertaste was still bad and I couldn't drink it! It was time to eat, so I thought I would move, but there was no information about the dining venue, so I moved to the first floor thinking it might be the first floor. Other guests didn't seem to know either, so I asked the staff on the first floor. When I looked at the receipt, it said "2nd floor" in small letters, so it was hard to notice. When we arrived at the dining area, we told the staff our room number, and they confirmed it and guided us to the number written on the table. They should have written the room number on the table from the beginning, but they were slow and customers were already lined up. They are really inefficient. The food that was placed at the beginning seemed to have been prepared quite early, so it was dry and dehydrated! The sushi rolls were also the worst. But the food after that was delicious. Tea and water are self-service and you have to go and get them yourself. The hot springs in Yamaga are good, but they seem to have a bit too much chlorine, so your hands get dry after you get out. When I went to the breakfast area the next morning, there were about 20 customers lined up. Just like at night, I told the staff my room number and they took a long time to look at the book and find the table number. I feel like they're stupid! This inn has the same level of service as a national guesthouse. The price for this stay was 18,300 yen per person for one night with dinner and breakfast. I think there are better inns for this price."

"It's really, really, really remote. You can only come here if you take advantage of a rental car, and the visuals that only this location can provide are great. There is a yakiniku restaurant with a tabehodai menu 3 minutes away by car. If you follow this schedule together, you can create a balanced diet during your day. Because the manager lives right next door. The sense of living is excellent. They live here with nature."

"They prepared an additional cake for my mother's birthday. The meal plan included breakfast and dinner, but I felt that the dinner course of chicken and miso hotpot wasn't worth the price. I changed it to a kaiseki course for an additional fee."
