"My wife and I were traveling and booked a room at Candlewood Suites in Gonzales while in LA. When we checked into Candlewood, the lobby had very unpleasant sweet smell. We went to our room, and opened the door it was FREEZING! The room temperature was set at 64 degrees. I turned the air-conditioner to heat and the smell coming out of the heater was like burning hair and I immediately turned it off. I checked out the bathroom and found dead bugs in the shower/tub area. I went down to the lobby and asked to be put in another room and was given a new room key. When we opened the door that room was also FREEZING with the temperature also set at 64 degrees. Closed the door and went down to the lobby and told the clerk we were not staying and told him why. He told us we would not be charged and went to the Hampton up the block. I sent an email to the manager telling him about our experience and asked why they rooms were all cold as meat lockers and received no response, which did surprise me. The next day I checked my emails and found an email from Candlewood Suite with the receipt for the room charge which I was told we would not be charged. I called Candlewood and spoke to the clerk and she sent me another receipt showing no charge. We have stayed at Candlewood suites before and were very happy with the chain, but after this experience I don't know if we will stay at another Candlewood again with all of the other quality motels available."

"We stayed here on a dark and stormy night on our 2026 Big Road Trip. We'd had many good stays over several decades at Marriott-affiliated suite properties, and that's what we were anticipating. However, the property is currently (as of June 2026) under some serious reconstruction, which impacted our stay. A labyrinthine walk to the front desk, er, folding table, messy half-finished corridors, and half the parking given over to contractor storage. Signs in the parking lot had ominous messages regarding visibility of valuables in vehicles, so we hauled in as much as we could. The staff was uniformly polite, but couldn't make up for the numerous other problems. One of the two elevators was malfunctioning - it would go down on request but not up. Worse, if the broken car was on the first floor, the good elevator would assume Mr. Bad Elevator was taking care of your lifting needs (spoiler: it wasn't) and you end up tromping up the stairs. However, my wife has mobility issues and needed the elevator, so that turned into an exercise of trying to outwit the 'vators just to get up one floor. Meanwhile, back to the room. Great full kitchen, good bath. The good news is the breaker box for the room is right there on the wall. The bad news one of the breakers kept tripping over and over with very little apparent load, so we had to plug into other awkward outlets. The beds were comfortable, but we discovered the housekeeping might not have been as diligent as hoped - that wasn't OUR gum stuck on the bedside lamp... The morning breakfast selection and quality was good, which we appreciated after everything else we'd dealt with. But the overall experience wasn't really acceptable, and had it been our first Marriott suite, it might have been our last. Hope the remodeling is thorough and successful so others don't run into the same problems."
